How is your old charger of 5W (packed until recently) still reasonably useful in 2020 to charge a new generation iPhone?

Virtuous? How about making the iPhones USB-C 5 or so years ago? When the rest of the world was trying to move to one standard (led by EU) Apple could have shown COURAGE and lead the pack 1-2 years ahead.
Those who want an Apple charger will buy one. Those who already have one probably won’t, because they don’t need one. Many will buy a Qi charger, which Apple doesn’t even sell. Apple should have stopped including those accessories years ago.

re:USB-C, Apple has no interest in switching iPhone to an inferior connector. If that means they’re not green to you, that’s fine. I guess maybe their 100% green rating should be cut to 99.99 or 99.98%, though, you could be right 🤷‍♂️

I wonder how many of the people here saying they have so many chargers already realise that Apple changed the iPhone 11 Pro charging cable from USB-A to USB-C and the charger in the box became an 18W fast charging one. How many people have those just laying around? I’m astounded by people happy to stick with their years-old 5W chargers when newer/better charging tech exists that should be in the box of a 1k+ phone. This kind of attitude is why companies can and do walk all over consumers.

I bet the reason they're doing this is for packaging purposes and shipping efficiency. It would be smart for them to offer chargers as separate items at a $9 price point at the time of phone purchase, and the people who don't need them can forego the cost. They could slim down the packaging down thinner than a pack of cigarettes for both if they do it this way.

It's a wireless future for sure. You may have your opinion about it but it's inevitable. Wired earpods and chargers not being included is a no brainer. Also, Apple is trying to find additional money so they can put the tech they want in the product which ultimately is what people are buying, not chargers and certainly not earpods.
Thanks for sharing. I didn’t realize Apple was hurting for money. Do you know if they started a GoFundMe yet?

Wrong. Apple used to have lots of value. You used to get a CD to restore your mac from, but now rather than a USB restore, they put that on the partition and ramp up the cost of storage. You used to get a computer with a discreet graphics card as standard, now only the top of the line of some models get that. Now, you are not even going to get headphones and a charger. Much Value, such WOW!
Soon they won't even ship the stickers lol. But prices will continue to go up.
iPhones were being discussed and a deflection occurred to Macs. Then it was noted the iPhone 12 has much new tech and to keep the price level and save the environment apple may be leaving out pods and charger. I see this as a win win. I guess it depends if one is a glass half full or empty person.

The world seems harder and harder for glass half empty people. I suspect it’s not a good life strategy.

It’s possible people have different use cases than yours. An old 5 watt charger and lightning usb-a cable charge an iphone 11 the same as an 18 watt charge with usb-c cable.

I literally lol’d at this overused, hackneyed worn-out line. Majority rules and if one believes Apple is walking all over their customers there are many android vendors to choose from.

Yes, exactly. If you all don’t like it that much, put your money where your mouth is and don’t buy it. There are plenty of other vendors to choose from. If you feel a relationship that you’re in is abusive, then leave it.

For many of us Apple diehards, this change simply isn’t an issue. I am not satisfied with Apple’s offerings anyway when it comes to charging. Give me a 3rd party charger any day, like those from Hypershop.

I think that for the majority of iPhone users, they’re not thinking about, know or care if their old 5W charger is going to be slow in charging a more modern iPhone, mainly because they’re charging their phone at night. And then you have those that have switched to wireless charging, and they don’t need a new charger to use a new iPhone.

There are also those people who upgrade regularly, so that if they bought the iPhone 11, they’ll have the higher wattage wired charger they can use, since you don’t normally return the charger or cable if you trade in your new device. For me, I’ll give my 11 Pro Max to wife as an upgrade to her XR, and she’ll simply use her existing wireless charger to charge it at night, so no need for me to give her my 18W charging brick (which I only use occasionally at work if I’ve blown through battery during the day).

I think it’s a smart move on Apple’s part. My guess is they will have some sort of system set up for people to easily add a charging brick if they have to have one, and price it so it’s less than buying it as a stand alone accessory.

Because god forbid they’d ever NOT pass the cost on to consumers one way or another.

So you’re comparing an essential accessory (a phone will only last so long without being charged) to an optional upgrade?
Yea now if they sold cars without alternators, that would be a comparison.

Welcome to MacRumors?

anyone that has owned an iPhone/iPad in the past 5 years likely has a dozen cables and wall plugs already. Do you really need another one?

You can buy said accessories from hundreds of other companies....not just Apple.

Agree. Except that if they did not own an iPhone 11 Pro, they would not have a 18 W charger, unless they bought one separately. Not including a charger with their flagship phone is ridiculous if the rumors are true.

Honest question.

Why?!

Have you ever thought “I wish my mobile data was faster than 4G. I don’t like waiting for X to load”?

You’d sacrifice battery life for milliseconds?

If 5G (up to 20GB/s) is half as fast as advertised, I plan to get rid of my home Internet service. Tried it with 4G (up to 1GB/s) and was a no go. Has more to do with signal strength but I'm hoping 5G will improve that as well.

5G adds $50-100 of cost, would you rather they jack up the retail price instead of finding a way to cut costs?
I'd rather they stick with LTE as 5G is completely meaningless.

Oh, and the latest information is that they are raising the price $100 anyway.

Holy crap, talk about gullible. I didn't realize it was this bad.

No need for immorality signaling, the answer is simple.

90+% of buyers are repeat iPhone buyers. We already have lots of headphones and chargers. We don't need more.

It’s all eventual e-waste, but Apple just cut it by thousands of metric tons. Quite virtuous, don’t you think? Nothing fake about it.
Even if any of that were true, which it isn't, it still would be pathetic virtue signaling.

Apple sold over 185 million iPhones last year alone. Most of those people are not new iPhone owners. Less than 40% of iPhones sold are to people new to the platform. They have chargers and charging cables. Much of those included with their new iPhones never get used and eventually end up in a landfill.

For instance, I have at least 20 unopened iPhone chargers, cables, and earbuds in a drawer. They will be heading to the landfill.

By not packaging a charger or earbuds with the phone, they reduce waste. Those that are new iPhone users can spend a couple dollars and buy one if they really need it.

My Porsche didn't include the upgraded stereo, and I paid $135k for it. I didn't find myself crying about it.
I'm sure it included a steering wheel though.

You people are unreal.

I would suggest that making assumptions that Apple is going to just take away the charger and not have a way of making it a benefit to those not needing one, and not a burden for people who do need them, is foolish at this point. Frankly, the whole conversation is pointless because we don’t yet know what Apple is going to do.
