But still expect a >$1k flagship phone. Because despite what apologists say, Apple is the worst of the worst when it comes to price gouging companies, and it only gets worse every year.

Were you expecting the price of an iphone to suddenly drop by ½ simply from removing the charging cable and EarPods?

No not at all, l I expect it to go up in price while the value returned to the customer continues to be eroded.

What you are describing is no different from every other year.

People buy an iphone because they are willing to pay a premium for superior hardware and software quality and year after year after year, Apple’s earning reports show that hundreds of millions of people around the world do precisely that.

And as their products evolve, Apple pours ever more effort into incremental improvements in the details, which in turn entails ever-higher costs, so it’s natural that prices will increase (even as margins fall).

By themselves, none of these improvements may appear revolutionary, but they come together to form a solid list of year-over-year improvements that result in a noticeably improved experience for the end user, and the results show that consumers agree.

The secret here isn’t that Apple has changed, but that Apple has not changed, and their continuing success shows how they continue to disrupt the conventional tenets of business through outstanding design and integration.

This year will be no different.

I'd be totally fine with this change if companies would just fess up and be honest about why they're doing it.

No need for some spiel about how many trees and dolphins got saved by not shipping chargers and earphones; just a simple "by giving up these items, you've saved us $3.18 in costs; we thank you for your sacrifice" written on the side of the box would be fine.

who says they aren’t being honest?

Wrong. Apple used to have lots of value. You used to get a CD to restore your mac from, but now rather than a USB restore, they put that on the partition and ramp up the cost of storage. You used to get a computer with a discreet graphics card as standard, now only the top of the line of some models get that. Now, you are not even going to get headphones and a charger. Much Value, such WOW!
Soon they won't even ship the stickers lol. But prices will continue to go up.

Considering most users aren't updated on what's going on in the hi-tech world i can predict what will happen if apple will release an iphone without charger and earphones. Once they will open the box and dont find such accessories they will get angry and back to the store asking for them, or for get money back. No matter what store employee will say, there will be a ton of angry customers. Consider also that many people don't uses ANY usb charger or ANY earphones. They want only the original ones in order to don't "break" their expensive iphones. Years ago i lost an iphone, so i ve made a listing on local listings service, to sell the box + the included accessories. Usually these boxes are bought by people that have an already stolen iphone or for making scams. However i got most (and a lot) calls from people asking for the charger OR the cable OR earphones. and the reason isnt only they want a genuine accessory, most of them thinks that they can charge their iphone ONLY with an apple charger. seems strange for us and for anyone that knows some electronics basics, but most people dont knows such things
People aren’t as ignorant as you believe.

This is dumb.

Partition restore is better for 99% of people, because 99% of people can’t find the cd, don’t know what to do with it, etc.
They always charged the same markup for storage.
When was a discrete graphics card ever standard? Only in the days before integrated graphics was a thing.
The earphone are absolute garbage.

So much complaining about nothing.

That's about as cheap as it gets. We're in a global pandemic, depression with unrest and yet they want to take away the charger and EarPods while sitting on $2bn? Come on man...
Yes this is a major problem for people. We all need more chargers and crappy earphones. Otherwise our junk drawers may get empty.

How wrong can you be ?
EVERY computer I had owned up until this one I upgraded the RAM and the HD as need and money allowed. Hell I even upgraded the RAM in the old TRS-80.
Apple has removed the ability to do this. and your choices are:
1) Buy with with specs you do not initially need at Apples massive markups
2) Sell the old machine for a loss and buy a new machine at Apples massive mark ups
3) Do without
With Apples move to ARM even the option of a hackintosh will be gone.

Upgrade is ALWAYS the first option in reducing ewaste
Repair is the 2nd option, however its not cost effective for Apple products

And don't get me started on their iMac packaging with all the polystyrene in it, or laptop/iPad/iPhone/etc packaging with plastic inserts.

Apples "Green" credentials is 100% marketing ********.

Apples Mantra should be "Throw it away and buy New"
Thank you for elaborating further, but I was only referring to the elimination of the charger. Upgradeability is a completely different story in terms of sustainability. Admittedly, it's a story where Apple has to pull the rip cord and change direction.

The 2 things are not mutually exclusive. I have a water filter jug that saves hundreds of plastic bottles a year and saves me money, do you expect a phone priced at $995.82? I think not shipping these by default is a good thing but maybe could be matched with a price reduction for the individual items for those who need them.

I was really hoping IPhone 12 would be USB C. I’m tired of carrying around specialty cables and adapters for my Apple devices.

It's a wireless future for sure. You may have your opinion about it but it's inevitable. Wired earpods and chargers not being included is a no brainer.

I don't see how the big bag of cables and adapters I have now can be considered "wireless". The future is adding more wires and adapters by removing ports. I think the word you're looking for is "it's a port-less future".

Oh yay another thread where people who weren’t planning on buying an iPhone can say they’re not going to buy an iPhone because Apple isn’t including a charger 😂🤦‍♂️

I think ( Guess ) I understand why Apple include a USB-C to Lightning Cable instead of USB-A.

Apple will be selling Fast Charger Only. So 18W / 20W. And they will all feature USB-C. So if you want a fast charger with your iPhone 12 you dont have to buy a separate cable ( As it is highly likely you dont have an USB-C to Lightning Cable ) It comes in the box.

If not, you will likely still have an old Charger and Lightning Cable anyway.

This move is significant in a way, that Apple thinks everyone has a smart phone already. They must have some data to prove this before making this move.

I think you forgot about the 5 year old Macbook Pro that wasn't updated and still charged full price lol
Yeah that never happened.

Not only were prices cut in April 2017 but the configs were also upgraded. There were also cuts to SSD pricing in October 2016 and again in July 2019.
