Only a new camera lens, that’s it?

Meanwhile, the S10 just released with a better camera, better screen, larger battery, in-screen fingerprint sensor, faster charging (in the box), reverse wireless charging, 128GB standard, micro SD, headphones jack and €409 ($464) cheaper than the iPhone XS 64GB in EU.

The reviews I've seen of the Pixel 2/3 are claiming it does the bokeh effect better than Apple does with two cameras though. And it has better low light performance.

I would say that having one camera with an adjustable aperture would be more useful. For low light scenarios etc - Also I've read rumours that one of the cameras may be monochrome thus used in conjunction with the other camera that does colour to give better photographs. If they end up doing that and the pictures still look worse than the Pixel 2 from years ago by the point this phone releases that would be embarrassing.

In-fact it's embarrassing that the Pixel 2 still beats the iPhone XS in photos.

It's not an accident that I didn't refer to bokeh effect in my post, though iPhones do have a much more depth-perceptive bokeh effect than the Google Pixel. That's not the same thing as saying iPhone's bokeh effect is "better," but you'll notice it in some situations. Low light phone photography typically uses only a single lens, and there is room for Apple to improve in this area, but that doesn't speak to the advantages of multiple lenses at all.

This is too ugly even for low stand's Timmy.

I think we might be pleasantly surprised. I have faith that Apple engineers kick ass and aren't incompetent like Timmy O'Tool Cook.

They should just make the freakin phone thicker. Those stupid camera "bumps" are annoying as hell. Why not just put a 200mm telephoto lens on the thing and call it a "bump".
The back should be flat so it lies flat on a desk. Try using it as a calculator or responding to a text message while it's on your desk. It rocks like its warped.
As I've said before, Apple appears to have let the well run dry on cool ideas and designs since the death of Steve Jobs. It's a shame.

I think it looks different. And in that sense - cool. Not the usual straight line of cameras found in other models. It also keeps all the lens elements in a compact area. I’ve always thought that people complaining about the way cameras look on the back of a smartphone as kinda pointless. They get all worked up about things like camera bumps. Lol. Really? Most smart people keep their smartphones in a case anyway thus elimanating any “bump”...but regardless, how is a slightly raised camera element an issue? I think it just gives people a reason to complain about iphones getting too thin. As if that was a real issue.

It looks exactly like the Mate 20. Which might not be surprising since Apple is gunning for the Chinese market.

Well it's definitely hideous looking, but a lot of people would appreciate a wide angle option or a more powerful zoom.

Unfortunately, if these are exclusive to the XS and XS Max updates and leave out the Xr, I will just stick to what I have, since I can't use OLED iPhones (unless they change whatever flares up my migraines). My Xr works well and digital zoom on it is sufficient.

iPhone camera bumps are already unreasonably obtrusive but they do fit nicely flush into most cases. I expect the new monstrosity will as well.

Not the most attractive but what does it matter, no one stares at the back of their phone all day.
Mine is always in a case so the bump is never really on my radar.

I'm just curious what this setup is for. I mean is it for sharper pics? AR? 3D? I don't even use any AR apps currently but I would love a sharper pic. The sensor is good but when you zoom in on anything too far away it becomes a pixelated mess.

Lets face it...theres only so much you can do to differentiate the look of a rectangular device. Only so much room to work with. They are all beginning to look like each other. The real difference maker is in the software and usability.

At what point does it make more sense to have a larger single camera that can change its focal length and aperture? I mean we can't put 20 cameras on these things to suit every scenario etc

The added cost of three separate camera modules feels like a bit much for me personally.

So the third lens will be an ultra wide lens? Its next year Apple is said to add a 3D depth mapping sensor on the back to improve spacial recognition for VR and enhance portrait mode, right?

First the TrueDepth camera housing. Now this pyramid. Ugly. Just like the iPhone 4. Good design is sacrificing camera quality and having one FLAT camera housing. Good design is getting rid of TrueDepth. But Apple only cares about looks.
Did you just say that good design is putting in a worse camera just so that it's flat?

And you say Apple is too concerned with asthetic?

They should arrange it in a stoplight at the very least.

You’re ‘stoplight’ theory doesn’t make sense for what Apple is trying to execute. It doesnt provide a good depth on the ‘X-like pattern for the camera orientation, which if the cameras are off- axis from each other, it creates a wider depth for VR rendering, which is likely what Apple is trying to accomplish.

if Apple really does something this stupid, I'm gonna short all my Apple stocks.
That might be unwise...

Whaaaa you mean there might actually be reasoning behind a design like this? Apple's design team isn't still in kindergarten? Incredible.

This is objectively ugly. If you don't think so you're either deluding yourself or you have no sense of aesthetics. At least the current design has some svelte elegance to it. Though I do dislike the way the camera sticks out on all of them because it essentially requires you to put your phone in a case. Which, to most people is not a problem because you want to protect your investment. But it just feels like there's no option for going naked with these bump-back iPhones. They don't lay nicely on tables. Now back to this design, if they wanted to truly innovate and have the triple lens, they should figure out a way to integrate it flush in the back of the phone. That would solve the ugly design problem (for the most part), and the problem of not laying flat.
