"Far different from the concepts that have been announced so far on rumor sites"?? WHAT concepts? I've heard: 3G capability, preference for gaming/movies/a new digital magazine format of some sort, and, in the ONLY rumor relating to its design, a 9-10" screen. So what does this new rumor mean? The screen size will be different than we think?

Yes it will be different. The something you swallow maybe. It may be a capsule, chewable, or tablet. 5 fruity flavors. Apple candy to munch on at the Apple store while you shop. Steve will demo it and bags of it will be passed to the press writing about the event.

Still waiting for iPhoto to include the ability to re-order individual pictures (drag & drop) within a group instead of the convoluted numbering scheme that iLife 08 uses. Sigh, maybe in 2010. :(

Apple should give some discount for those who have old Apples with PPC. It shall be called the Apple Stimulus Package.

PPC is getting way too old. I still have an old iBook G4 and it's barely running 10.4. Just way too slow. Probably the new stuff Apple is going to put in will probably need a faster processor anyways.

GO FOR IT APPLE! Make the switch! I always like seeing new things! Definitely keeps a big gap from Apple and Microsoft.

Cloudy crystal ball

Apple has an urgent corporate interest in getting out some software that showcases the new technologies in Snow Leopard and inspire other major software developers to do the same. Which is pretty obvious and doesn’t require the predictive powers of a Nostradamus (and which also makes me suspect that new iLife and iWork suites will be out sooner rather than later, I bet Apple is making this a crash project). More interesting, and harder to predict, is what new features will be added to these suites to do the showcasing. J Apple needs some wizzy new stuff that will only work on Snow Leopard that will make us all sit up and take notice.

Maybe the tablet isn't going to be a "Tablet" at all! Maybe it will be something no one ever though of yet... Probably actually! Remember the iPhone mockups? Maybe it's the same case we're having with the Tablet...

I hope the next version of Pages adds cross-referencing support. Being in academics, it is currently useless to me without it. I would love to dump MS Word.

If Apple simply does occasional updates to iLife/iWork 2009 to stay compatible with 10.4.11 and 10.5.x until the 10.5 updates EOL, that should satisfy PPC owners. In two years all PPC owners will have sufficiently compelling reasons to update they will remain in the realm of backward compatibility of software as IIci, 8600 and TiG4 do now.

If iL/iW 2010 coexist with 2009, there is no reason why they could not release a version in 1-2010, albiet one no sane person would actually use in a production environment until a .2 release is made. Front loading the debug phase would be smart.

One wonders how long it will be until that version is optionally usable in the cloud as well. Probably when an iTablet (ATNN) is released in 2H 2010, delayed as a result of component manufacturing limitations in sufficient volume for an Apple product. New problem for Apple. :) I wish for unicorns and LTE compatiblity.

Rocketman

The new tablet will be round.

You heard it here first, folks!

You beat me to it. I was going to say spherical--like a crystal ball that sees all your thoughts (media, notes, etc).

If it's unlike all of the mockups which all bear a common thread of relatively flat rectangularity the only option is new geometries. Bucky balls!

If the retail box doesn't change, it will be bad with Best Buy customers. For some reason that retail chain doesn't update their Apple products until weeks after Apple has shipped the newer product. For example, they still sell the old mouse only. Also they didn't have Snow Leopard, new iPods, or iLife '09 until way after the launch dates.

I don't go to Best Buy often. But I do know that they didn't have the new 13" MacBook Pro on display when there were on display in the Apple Stores. I encouraged a manager to get one from the stock room and put it on display.

I did, however, buy Snow Leopard at Best Buy on the day that it was released. It made sense since they had it for $25 and Best Buy is five minutes away and the Apple Store is thirty minutes away.

It has already been done elsewhere:

Apple doesn't copy; they create and innovate.

iLife X

I guess Apple won't miss the big 1-0 chance. Wouldn't iLife X , iWork X look cool? :)

I was kinda hoping to pick up a fresh copy of iWork X or '10 or whatever around February, but I guess I'll have to stick to OpenOffice and WriteRoom for a little longer.

I wish Apple would add a modern day MacPaint for iLife and also a MacPaint Pro as a Photoshop replacement. That would make me a happy camper. :), Actually several iLife apps could really do well to have a Pro counterpart such as Pages Pro and iWeb Pro.

I don't see a reason to drop 10.5 support for iLife and iWork.

if it possible that the next revision wouldn't have any actual changes just 64 bit support. and since Leopard isn't 64 bit.

so instead of ilife/iwork 09 and 10 you'd have ilife/iwork and ilife-64bit/iwork-64bit

I expect apple to create a new authoring program that allows people to create their own iTunes LP/extra content.

it will go to the labels and studios before we'd ever see it.

Apple screwed PPC people with SL. Do you really expect anything else from them?

they haven't made a PPC machine in 3 years. all the last ones they sold are now out of warranty. and you can get a heck of a lot more machine by buying. so much so that continuing to flog a dead horse is not real smart.

and those that are using 5-7 year old machines aren't likely doing intensive enough to need Snow Leopard.

I'm sure that iLife and iWork would require the 64-bit kernel.

I've been saying the next iLife/iWork wouldn't be out until mid -2010. It makes sense with the previous development cycles. There is only so much you can update every 12 months. Maybe we'll get a Blu-Ray player mid-2010 with an update iDVD in iLife.

Maybe iDVD will be renamed iBluray :D

Apple waiting long enough before dropping support for PPC, a looong time in technology years of course, besides Leopard still supports PPC and it's still a very capable OS.

Looking forward to it, especially if they are 64-bit. (No iTunes 9 32-bit cop-out please).

The sooner Apple gets all their flagship software moved over and using the technologies in Snow Leopard the better.

I can't wait for iMovie to fully be 64bit. That would be WAY more helpful to me than iTunes or even iPhoto...

Not saying it would't be nice, just saying iMovie is more intensive .

Why 64bit ?

Can anyone explain to me the advantage of running iWork under 64bit ? It's not really a package that requires any increase in speed or performance

Instead of a tablet, Apple with come out with an e-reader at a very "attractive" price point. Large size e-ink displays with color support is going into production. Some of these displays even support "flexible" form factors.

Steve was probably partially honest when he said nobody reads books anymore. However, the primary application for a larger size color e-reader is likely to be magazines. Magazine publishing industry is suffering because of the delay involved in printing and distribution and offering the content for free on a website does not appear to be an acceptable solution. Being able to distribute content almost instantaneously would be a big win for magazine publishers. A reader that provides a somewhat standard display format, much higher resolution than what is possible on typical LCD displays and better control over the content is exactly what magazine publishers need to transition their product from paper to electronic format.
