The tabs in the title bar were simply horrible. Worst UI idea ever. Good riddance. I might have liked to see Chrome-style tabs — tabs on top do rock, as long as they're not part of the friggin' title bar — but going back to the Safari 3 style is fine with me.

New page loading indicator is at least pretty noticeable, unlike the spinner from the beta. Not as good as the old progress bar, but the next best thing. It does provide a larger target to click on to stop the loading of a page (the whole thing is a button).

I seem to recall a hack for the beta that allowed the tabs to be set back to under the title bar? Maybe this could be used in reverse for those wanting them back?

Code:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool YES

Try that in terminal, might do the job...

wow, I can't believe they abandoned the best feature of safari, besides the speed, of tabs on top. Im on a macbook pro and i loved how tabs on top saved me vertical space. Plus i found the top tabs to be really convenient and slick.

damn it, this is really annoying. anyone have a link to download the beta again? i can't use these tabs, they're absolutely horrible

I didn’t like the tabs on top at first, then got used to it, now it seems wrong again... it's not a real big issue but hopefully an option would be good.

I think the 'loading' bit is an improvement over the spinning circle, but their still needs to be a progress indicator somewhere!

I found Glims plugin the other day, sorts the 'open in new window/tab' annoyance out and lets you change the search engine. I'm not sure it works perfectly with Safari 4, but it does work. Some of you might find it useful.

nope, both changes are bad.

The tabs change was uncalled for and ridiculous, also the loading graphic is huge and unnecessary. The spinning indicator was enough.

I never liked the tabs on the top, I used the terminal command with the beta to move them to under the bar so I don't really care. Everything seems the same so far.

I still get ridiculously long hangups with flash videos and ads a lot, beachball will show up when the page is loading a flash element and won't unfreeze for like half a minute until I command-option-escape, once the force quit window shows up it unfreezes. Happens most of the time when I fullscreen a flash video too, but I've had this problem since safari 3.

The caching bug is still there. If you hard-refresh a page, every page on that site will reload every element every time you view a new page (for example, if you refresh a page on a forum, every time you view a new page on that same forum it will reload every image). Try it.

Hmmm I've never noticed that before but I think your right... might be easier to tell with a progress bar though...

whatever, i just switched back to firefox after really enjoying the safari beta for the past few months. The tabs are garbage, i would use chrome but it's useless right now.

so who's starting the "make the tabs at the top an option" petition?

At first i didn't like the tabs on top, but after using it for a while it started to make a lot of sense. It made keeping track of lots of tabs and lots of windows A LOT easier. You could have multiple windows open and see all the available tabs and which ones were active. It was also easier to read the tab labels when they were on top and the bookmark bar was directly above.

Very disappointed.

The Safari 4 (final) release is really a step backwards in UI design compared to the public beta.

This is sad news on such a otherwise nice apple day. :(

I agree although everything was pretty disappointing to me WWDC wise (except Snow Leopard maybe)

i would like tabs on top, reload button moved, blue progress bar and no loading graphic. or a link to the beta so i can have it all back. please.

This is by far the fastest browser I have ever used. It's awesome. I even opened all 155 of my bookmarks in tabs and it was still running fine. Oh and by the way since everyone has to have their opinion about the tabs, I like them better on the bottom. I'm just used to that location form firefox.
