The tabs on top was a stupid idea, thank goodness it's gone.

I like how everyone who misses the tabs is stating their reasons for it, everyone who doesn't is saying things like "It's stupid. Why? Because it's stupid." Aristotle would be proud...

And I agree that it should just be a preference, that way those who don't want it don't have to have it; removing it entirely was unquestionably ridiculous.

What I don't see any reason for is removing the tab swapping feature in the beta (by grabbing the corner of a tab, you could pull it into its own new window or another open window as a tab). You can still pull a tab out into its own window in the final, but you can't seem to return it or add it to another open window as far as I can tell.

Send a bug report with that suggestion if you want to see those back. I did.

And in regards to the post on page 1, the reason it seemed like there were more beta testers that wanted the tabs changed back is that people generally don't report on features they like, but they do report on ones they don't, the assumption being that the ones they do like are already part of the software (at least the public beta assumption). Let's see how many beta testers write apple/fill out bug reports...

Quick question: How safe is Safari 4? I heard that Safari has problems with Paypal and phishing. I've found evidence to support this but it's old. Has this problem been solved?

Gimme the blue loading bar back and I'll be pleased with it.

I have no choice but to stick with Safari for the time being. I tried using Camino last night for the first time in a long while, and the UI is just too ugly. It's also light years behind Safari as far as rendering text properly. It was really noticeable after using the beta of Safari for the past two months. Firefox is meh on a Mac. I just can't get by the horribly designed tabs - and they're even worse in beta 4 with that silly plus sign.

The difference doesn't bother me so bad.

I liked the blue loading bar. The circle timer thingy doesn't show any "progress".

Safari 4 has a phishing filter and support for EV certificates. These are the two security features it used to be missing that Paypal used to complain about.

Love it... I used firefox before... hated the beta but the final is cool...
I was surprised as to how much faster it is compared to my firefox

Multi-touch scrolling is very smooth and fast :)

Official release kept crashing on me. About 10 crashes this morning, and I don't have any plug-ins that could interfere.

I've restored the much more stable Safari 4 BETA from Time Machine and I'm a happy camper once again.

I LOVE Time Machine. :D

Safari 4 colour messing up?

I've noticed since the Safari update that colours in images go a bit weird, like their contrast and saturation are getting turned right up.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Edit:

Ok, its not just images, flash videos and CSS backgrounds appear to do this as well. Here's a screen shot from the MR homepage. As I scrolled part of the blue background area on the posting page became bright turquoise.

ok, i'm dumb. i admit it!

how do i get a 'page refresh' icon into the toolbar - its not an option in the standard 'customise toolbar menu'. i need it to update sport live text pages that don't autorefresh (hello BBC.........).

Interesting. The contrast of the guy's red shirt is extremely apparent... I tried my Safari tho, and there is a lot less contrast - it displays it the same way my Firefox does.

Btw, how do you get little icons on the left of your tabs? (My Safari doesn't display them, yet Firefox does...)

How do you have the same "marble" scroll bar used in iTunes & iLife?

I can't find the instructions I used, involved just copying an rsrc file from iTunes to OS X, a bit of Googling and you'll find instructions.

Where the new 'Loading' bit shows in the address bar, it becomes a refresh button when the page is loaded.

The Glims plugin, also does a lot more.

D'oh:D

thanks!

Ah, thanks man, nice little addition to Safari. I still wish there was a way to make Safari look a bit neater - for ex.: I prefer the round buttons FF uses. And there appears to be slightly more contrast between the grayness and the letters in the bookmark bar, too...

Also, I wish the "x" on the tabs was on the right side like in FF, instead of the left...

I'm not a fan of the new loading bar, or the new color scheme. Also, the tabs on top had grown on me. Give them back Apple. I won't go as far as switching browsers, or reverting to the beta (the final version seems to be much more stable), but Apple really needs to fix their screwup.

Don

Is it possible to remove the Bookmarks icon in the bookmark bar? I've been able to remove the "Top Sites" one, but not the Bookmarks one...

Does anyone know how to get the blue progress bar back in safari 4?
I know it was possible with some terminal code in the beta version.
The person that approved the design of the loading button in Safari 4 should get his ass kicked.

The following link has a few terminal commands that will allow you to change some of the new features of Safari 4.

Just cut and paste the command of the feature you what to change in a terminal window and hit enter. For most of these, you can undo them by simply changing the bool at the end of the command from false to true or vice-versa.

I haven't checked for them, but a few of these options might be available under preferences in the final Safari 4.

I used several these during the Safari 4 beta to get it working just as I like it. :D
