Ok, someone explain to me how black-and-white screen even makes a difference. The pixels are exactly the same, regardless of what color they're showing, it's not like it's switching to e-Ink.

It just seems like a placebo to make Samsung users think that they are saving battery because everything is grayscale. The only way I can see it actually working is if the black pixels actually turn off?

The S5 has a AMOLED screen. The black pixel do turn off. But they should have used gray instead of white. White draws a lot of power on AMOLED's imo

I just don't understand the obsession with thinness at the expense of solid battery life. It continues to plague the iPhone, but Apple seems to have gotten the message WRT Macbooks. I'm an emergency responder who often works in remote areas. I now have a Droid Maxx with a beautiful 5"" screen and 2-day battery life (just wish it had the 5s camera). And it still fits fine in a jeans pocket.

I'd love to see other manufacturers, including Apple, make battery life a real priority!

I've always thought it was a strange strategy for Samsung to make fun of iPhone customers when that's the very person they should try to appeal to. I'd never buy a phone from a company that made fun of me.

I'm not opposed to Android phones. I've tried them out and decided I like iOS better. To each his own. I think it's healthy to have different options.

But Samsung specifically is a company I'd never buy from because of their long history of bashing iPhone customers. I won't even buy their appliances, which have a lot of unique, forward-thinking features, but they also have a loooong history of breaking down after a year or two.

Samsung may be good at coming up with new ideas, but their execution is poor and none of their products last very long. This is where Apple shines with their reliability and attention to detail. Everything I've ever bought from Apple has lasted for years. Let's see Samsung make a commercial about that.

This was the way Apple advertised their products for 90% of their existence, by insulting their competition and, in turn, the masses that used them.

Remember "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC".

Further back, Apple used to have Jeff Goldblum bash the "big beige box" to mock the Wintel platform.

And remember Ellen Feiss?

And during that time... Apple was SEVERELY behind in the PC market.

On the other hand... Samsung is the #1 smartphone manufacturer in the world.

Why are they so worried about the iPhone?

I thought Samsung was "winning"

To be honest, cell phone battery technology all around is terrible. I'm surprised we haven't developed something better by now, but I'm not entirely sure what else we could do

Go create a better battery yourself. It's super easy right?

My co-worker (Indian) used to swap batteries and charge his S4 like every hour! I usually can get by with one charge for the day on my iPhone 4s, which took a major battery decrease with iOS7 too. All depends on how much you're using it. If you're constantly charging your phone all day, then I best suggest you find a real job to fix the problem

malware

They don't show all the people that have to master reset their GS5 because of malware/viruses/crapware that cripples the phones software.

you dont have to be worried to highlight an advantage compared to your biggest competitors offering

apple seemed to respond to customer demand at the recent wwdc so hopefully next september will be similar

Most samsung devices uses AMOLED for their display, not LCD.

with an AMOLED display, Each individual pixel gives off it's own light. Because of this, a black pixel in an AMOLED display is actually an OFF pixel. There is no energy being used to light up that pixel.

By switching to a black and white display, that is mostly black, it means that they can highly limit how much energy the screen is using.

With standard LCD tech, a black pixel is just a pixel that has been switched to block all light through it. The LED backlight is still full lit. Whether it's displaying a black screen or full colour, that backlight is going to be on.

Thats how Samsung is able to offer the ultra low power mode with a black and white screen and actually increase quite dramatically the battery life.

why did you include what is in parenthesis?

Samsung is so pathetic... it boils me to ****ing watch that. guess what Samsung, that bandaid looking piece of shyt looks hideous and the back cover splits apart from the base when dropped, AND couldn't even hold charge. haha PATHETIC.

get back to me when your device actually matters. APPLE Doesn't care.. Apple will walk around your piece of crap device.

But what's the difference between carrying an extra battery and a little back-up power device? And with all the caveats (no wi-fi, no BT, limited app access etc) I'd think the power saving mode, while clever, might be more disappointing that satisfying. Your opinion may differ. :)

Spare battery will be thin and perhaps something I could fit in my wallet. A 'little back-up power device' would be much larger and means I have to keep it attached to my iPhone - not exactly convenient is it?

I have never in my whole life seen someone with an Android phone with malware on it. downloading stuff from other sources than Google Play i guess

. It limits cellular connectivity to 3G, turning off LTE

Dear god no, I get noticeably better battery life on LTE then when I'm limited to 3G. Maybe it's the network in my area, but I can sit and watch the battery level drop on 3G as I watch webpages load.

Try turning LTE off.

What tends to happen, if LTE attena is on in your device, and you are outside of LTE area, while your device flips down to 3g, your LTE antenna is still trying to get back onto LTE, often ramping up the juice used.

THis is probably why you're finding the drain so much higher in 3g than in LTE.

Haha. Finally a Samsung ad I laughed at.
I'm thinking that the main reason that iPhone users are "wall hugggers" is there OCD. My whole family will plug there phone in at 90%. And if we are some where that they cant plug in all I hear is "OMG my phones at 80%!!!!". Its crazy

Really Android's got better battery life courtesy of Qualcomm with the "Krait" series of Snapdragon CPUs and forward. And there S5 is interesting here in that Samsung is using the Snapdragon 801 in it in most regions, with the 8 core Eoxynos in a related model in much more limited distribution.

Also with Android prepare to hand over all your personal data to Google. Apple specifically stipulates to not taking and using personal data as does MS. I'll take my privacy thank you.

As to battery life, I have never had an issue. I imagine iOS8 will be more efficient and so with the iPhone 6 as the larger display should be more than offset by the larger battery.

Genius? And who's minds are they going to change, exactly? This ad makes their fan base feel good, nothing more.

Survey after survey keeps showing more people switch to iOS than switch to Android. The only reason Android's market share has grown is because they get much more of the low-end customers replacing feature phones.

This is a defensive ad to convince the Samsung people not to look too closely at iOS. They're trying to hold onto their high-end market share, which keeps bleeding, since their low-end has such bad margins.

Maybe this move by Samsung will prod Apple to include better battery life and/or replaceable batteries in iPhones and iPads...

so true

if it wasnt for my mophie juicepack i would be a wall hugger.

And no I am not going to shut off location based apps thats a stupid fix.

Need more battery power!!

Without Samsung, this world would be a boring place! They keep us entertained with jokes. Galaxy is a bigger phone than iPhone thus includes a bigger battery.

I agree with the Samsung (SameSong) being entertaining, but a bigger phone doesn't necessarily require a bigger battery. Sure, the screen is larger so that would draw more juice, but what really affects how long a battery lasts is how well the device manages the available power, and how well the operating system and applications are written. Poorly-performing apps can be devastating to power usage.
