Samsung Bashes the iPad, Microsoft Surface and Kindle in New Ad

People have a short memory.

Remember the Apple Genius ads a couple of years ago, which pretty much insulted Apple's own customers as being too stupid to do anything without help?

Let's not forget the iPhone ad with Zooey Deschanel, where she asks Siri "Is that rain?" as she's staring out the window at the rain? The ad should've closed with the tagline "Apple's iPhone - Designed for morons."

(Quick remark: I've added a second part to my prev. post in the meantime.)

----------

Again: I don't find these ads insulting at all. There have been some insulting ads of Samsung (like the iSheep one) but this definitely isn't one of them.

This ad had some stupid points (e.g., dissing Windows tablets because of the keyboard/dock/mouse and stating it's because of the higher DPI that Samsung screens are better) but it does bring up some valid points; most importantly, the, from the iPad, paingully missing windowed multitasking.

Not saying the ad was flat out wrong. Just rebuking the myth about Apple's ads and why they made sense for Apple at the time.

"Retina Thingy" sounds a hell load more catchy than "two thousand five hundred and sixty by one thousand six hundred resolution"!

Yes, but nerds love to say stuff like that. It keeps the tech n00bs away so they can feel like they're part of a special club.

579 comments so far....all other threads have less than 20% of comments. Samsung is really making Apple and iSheeps feeling uncomfortable.

Haha.

----------

Samsung seems to get desperate. With the Retina iPad now going for $399, who in their right mind would buy a Samsung tablet?

Someone who doesn't want iOS restrictions I guess.

----------

Particularly loved the mention of pixels.

Number of pixels != Display quality.

It's like the whole camera megapixel war all over again.

Quality made by Samsung. Apple should rely on Sharp and LG then.

Personally the only Samsung products I buy are TV's, monitors, SSD's, washer, dryer, dishwasher, and fridge. Everything else is crap.

Funny you mention this. My Samsung fridge is the biggest pile of POS fridge I've ever owned - requiring at least two repairs per year over the last eight years. It is one of the primary reasons I won't buy a Samsung phone, tablet or any other device. Honestly terrible product. Never again.

Mac vs PC ads helped Apple a lot....

Now OSX has what, 8% market share ?

There are more Windows 8 users than OSX users....I would call it a catastrophic.

Android and Samsung is beating Apple too.

This is a fact.

That's why I want to try GE or Kenmore smartphone.

They do if they're told that's why another screen looks better.

Otherwise, Apple just threw away all the time and money they spent promoting "retina" screens.

Why, because women in a spa are too stupid to know what having "a better picture because it has more pixels" means ???

On the contrary, both my 35 year old daughter and 11 year old daughter do know about both pixels and retina. (Lord knows I hear my youngest constantly asking for a retina iPad!)

The ad didn't show a technical debate. It was a simple "your screen looks better because it has more pixels", which anyone can understand. Even the women you seem to think don't have brains to discuss it even at that high level.

Wow, you're being sexist to even think that. Why would you ever consider that someone would say something like that about a woman? You're disgusting and propagating hate in our society by suggesting that someone might say women are less intelligent. It's people like you who keep these arguments going while everyone else is progressing forward. Were those not two women at a spa? I was referring to the commercial as presented. Get your head out of your a**. Two anything (man, horse, space dragon) at a spa won't give a crap about pixel density. They're at a spa relaxing. And as far as pixel density goes—it doesn't matter post-retina! Apple spent money getting people onto retina from dim displays with poor color reproduction and blocky pixels. Higher than retina is a waste of pixels because you can't see them. It's like buying a Monster HDMI cable for $120: pointless. That's not to say that a larger iPhone might come along with a higher resolution, but it's warranted when you increase the surface area to maintain pixel density.

No but a tailored google search coincidentally pulled this up from 2010.

(yes, I know this has nothing to do with trademark)

The best parts of that article are in the comments... a few gems:

"...stuff with exactly the same specs, but without the massive bollox of hype, have been around for ten years straight now, with no succes. Sorry."

"As already outlined, the device isn't even useful... Cant wait to see which morons buy it."

"The hype will will clear away when THE NEXT BIG THING comes along from IBM, Microsoft, or Apple, & eventually the iPad will be a strange - looking object in a museum of art or tech. history."

I'm confused.

1 - I didnt know you needed a mouse and a battery dock for a windows surface
2 - I thought facetime stays running as you browse whatever app you want to send any documents from.
3 - The selling point of Kindles has never been multitasking but electronic paper.

Am I retarded or is Samsung being incredibly misleading.

Lies

False advertising, can't multitask with all apps, better display? uhm i like better the iPad I can say that because i have both

----------

No doubt Samsung is innovating but their biggest problem is that they use Android = (crap) and for those who say that I don't know what I'm talking about i been using Android for a while but there's nothing like iOS

Yeah, damn those people who are knowledgeable about the things they use. Knowing about stuff is for nerds.

Straw man.

Retina is easier to say and for laymen to wrap their heads around, so naturally the neck beard nerds decry it.

We can do this all day, let me know if you feel like arguing.

I replied to your initial straw man with a straw man of my own, and you replied with yet another straw man to counter.

I don't know if we're arguing so much as throwing things at each other here.

Right. Because lacking flash, which is instead replicated (sometimes better) in other ways is exactly like lacking multitasking, which means you simply don't have the functionality at all.

Not entirely sure what kind of multitasking are you on about (keep hearing a lot about it) but in my iPhone have been for years and frankly I like the app switching tray of iOS 7.

Apple spent money getting people onto retina from dim displays with poor color reproduction and blocky pixels.

Too bad the rMini screen is everything but quality. It's horribly washed out.

- true, unrestricted multitasking
- windowed (split-screen) multitasking

Both are missing from iOS.

False advertising, can't multitask with all apps,

See the previous post on rooting and making all apps compatible with windowing.

better display? uhm i like better the iPad I can say that because i have both

But you don't have an rMini, I presume...

----------

People make the "problem" sound much more worse than it is. It's far from horrible. I won the retina Mini and the Air and love them both.

It is horrible for anyone who
- is unbiased (not an Apple fanboy blindly justifting all decisions of Apple)
- have used a device with a decent screen (incl. all 9.7" Retina iPads) so he knows how a decent screen should render colors.

While I *do* love my rMini, the screen is simply cr@p, color saturation-wise.

Wow, you're being sexist to even think that. Why would you ever consider that someone would say something like that about a woman?

Because that's the way your post came across to me. I might be extra sensitive though, having daughters who are quite comfortable with tech. If that's not what you meant, I apologize.

Two anything (man, horse, space dragon) at a spa won't give a crap about pixel density. They're at a spa relaxing.

These people had tablets with them, which wouldn't be unusual these days in place of a book. In many parts of the world, it's also common to strike up a conversation, and someone might easily say, "That's a nice picture on your tablet".

Now, as to whether or not it actually has a nicer picture, that's a different topic.

And as far as pixel density goes—it doesn't matter post-retina! Apple spent money getting people onto retina from dim displays with poor color reproduction and blocky pixels. Higher than retina is a waste of pixels because you can't see them.

A common misconception.

"Retina" does NOT mean you can no longer see the pixels at all. That only occurs past a certain distance depending on the display PPI, and even then only if you have average or worse eyes.

For example, at 12", it requires 300 ppi. At 6", it takes almost 600 ppi to be a "retina" display.

Yeah I think they underestimated the stupidity of the average consumer. People like the ipad because it's so dead simple to use. There were no other options available back then that would make sense for the average consumer. Tablets were way too thick, only lasted a couple of hours, and ran desktop OS' which were not optimized for mobile.

It's kind of funny, but a lot in that article sounds like what Apple fans say today, first about Android, then about Windows mobile/tablets. You can see Android surging ahead, and even Microsoft is making small but tangible strides, especially internationally.

Wow, I don't think he was being sexist. I have no idea if Samsung picked 2 women in a spa on purpose, but it's possible they tried to zone in on a demographic which might not be as tech savvy. In contrast they could have made it 2 dudes from Macrumors, but what I perceived as there point would have been lost, which was (IMO) showing the enlightenment of consumers who might not know better due to not being as tech savvy.

This whole retina debate thing is funny too, only because it was (and still is to a certain extent) the major focus of Apple's marketing. I don't notice much if any difference between retina and non retina, really only in text and I think text looks MUCH better on a windows tablet with a lower resolution due to clear type technology. Just a bunch of marketing, when Apple does it then it's great, but when Samsung does it hold on.

I too love Apple, and true you can't fault Samsung for advertising what they feel makes them better.

So then they should advertise it.

Apple advertises what they feel makes the iPhone and iPad better all the time. But you don't see them bashing or even acknowledging other products. They stopped that game a long time ago. And even when they did it they didn't call out exact brands but rather the whole umbrella of products that used Windows

----------

Oh another Apple hater on MR bashing Apple and it's users. Why oh why doesn't MR make people fill out an application to see if they qualify to post here?

Or if you think someone is just being an Apple hating dick head troll you use the forums built in ignore list and be done with it. You don't 'feed' them with replies etc. just Add to and be done with it

----------

lol at "it's got a retina thingy." I get that Apple wants use their own terms avoid saying that the iPhone isn't HD,

it's HD? You mean because it isn't 16:9 in its physical form. That ratio isn't necessarily great for all uses and users. But you can totally play both 720p and 1080p video on both devices so in that sense it is HD

Somehow I just don't think that trying to make users of competing products look stupid is a good marketing strategy. This reminds me of Apple's lemmings commercial from 1985. Apple insulted the very people it wanted to buy Macs. Very stupid. Samsung is doing the same thing. And what's with this stupid "The next big thing is here" slogan? Haven't they used it long enough? Samsung must have some serious self doubt and insecurities if it must always bash other products. Apple never does that in its own ads. They merely present what their products can do, and let the customers make up their own minds. I don't have much respect for snarky people who constantly criticize other people, so why would I have any respect for a company that does the same thing? Ads like this make me want to blacklist ALL of Samsung's products.

Yes they did!

In their ads they mentioned XP, Vista and Windows 7. They even did an ad which mentioned Samsung.
