Good point, no one's pointed that out yet.

"I'm a mac and I'm a PC". A PC computer! not a PC user. That's the whole joke

the ads focused on PC's being unreliable. They did not directly mock PC users. At most they called PC's uncool, which is not a direct insult to PC users.

There's a big difference.

Another big difference is that the Mac vs. PC commercials were good

Next time just say "im an apple fanboy" instead of this long winded reply making excuses for it. You aren't fooling anyone and its less effort on your part.

Team Apple:

Stylus? Are they joking? Can get one for iPhone if needed.
Insulting users not a good idea
FaceTime rip off
Mac vs PC was about platforms not user
Samsung desperate?
What group was this advert aimed?

Team Samsung
Stylus is not essential. Still a Touchscreen. Pressure senstive.
Apple insulted before (e.g. Mac vs PC)
Video Chat before on other phones
Applefan are outraged, so the ad did its job.

Team Neutral

I occasionally use a stylus on my iPad. Would not, probably, use it on an iPhone, but a point tip pressure stylus would be cool for an iPad. Use it for writing notes or drawings.

I agree with the last part, as a matter of fact when the rumors of an Apple tablet surfaced I was imagining something that would have functionality similar to Wacom tablets. Clearly the iPad doesn't and I don't think it needs to anymore but it would be nice if it were pressure sensitive. But I suppose I'd prefer an actual Wacom tablet for that lol

At first I was skeptical about the stylus (for the Note), thinking that's pretty "old" by our standards today but I found the pressure sensitivity and whatnot to make it at least interesting. I wouldn't draw on a surface so small but it's better than the old PDA styli. haha

And my last bit of input on the ad for now is that I think Samsung would have been more effective with an ad that focused less on opposing companies' consumers. I say this because, while even Apple's Mac/PC ads were entertaining at times (pretty light-hearted), I think it's arguable that many people might prefer their newer (iPad) ads than those because they focus on their own products' abilities, and they don't need to compare it to anyone else anymore (or say something like "well, you don't have an iPhone") because it's not the best marketing strategy, at least in my opinion, to do so. I guess that pointing out other companies is somewhat of a sign of acknowledgement of their place in the industry (Apple and Microsoft, as noted above), but it's not always necessary.

I also think that when Apple supporters attack or insult Android users (and vice versa) it often is in an immature way that is similar to the series of Samsung ads. There's no need to fuel that fire

I totally agree. I'm not by any means a loyalist to either company. I switched from the iPhone 4 to the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket because I wanted a larger screen. Then, shortly after, I got rid of my Windows laptop and got a MacBook Pro.

It's near impossible to be "loyal" to one single brand, haha.

If iPhone had a 4.5 inch screen, I wouldn't even consider anything else. Since it does not, I am looking. I think the Skyrocket is a very nice device.

And to think someone can actually have a discussion without resorting to name calling.

Obviously got the attention of the Apple fans.

Great job Samsung.

Yes, amusing and clever advert.

Probably not the kind of attention they wanted. :p

Samsung probably couldn't care less about what die-hard Apple fans think - this is aimed at the folks in middle America who are starting to think "maybe I should upgrade my flip phone to one of those smartphones".

And, as such, the arrow hits the bullseye.

Nothing surprises me here anymore at the lengths anti-Apple folks will go in an attempt to trivialize Apple's success.

...or the lengths that the pro-Apple folks will go to in an attempt to trivialize any non-Apple product.

I believe you are correct, but Samsung claims its a hardware deficiency. Which is a load of crap. They would rather sell you the "next big thing".

I agree - since Apple supports IOS 4 on every Iphone ever made. Oh, wait.

The funniest thing about this commercial and the ensuing discussion we are having in the thread is that this COMMERCIAL IS NOT AIMED AT THE PEOPLE COMMENTING IN THIS THREAD!.

+1 - I said something similar a bit earlier.

The advert made me laugh hard.

People tend to forget in life the power of having a sense of humour and being able to both poke fun and be on the receiving end.

Some of the Mac vs. PC ads made me laugh as well - but many others were based on lies and misinformation, and didn't make me laugh.

I don't see anything in the "lies and misinformation" category in the Samsung ad.

And I loved the "barista dude".

Whereas Samsung is so hell bent on insulting Apple fans.

See "Mac vs. PC"....

Also, I love how everybody is putting down the Note because of the stylus... but if you read articles about the Note, the main talking point about the phone is the stylus!

Yes - so many here think that the *option* of using a stylus is a bad thing. Options are not bad - the finger is a very large, imprecise object.

There's a reason Seurat didn't paint Un dimanche après-midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte with his finger.

The whole world (including myself) would go bonkers if Apple released a 4.5 in iPhone.

But I picked the Galaxy S II because I have a slight preference for Android, nothing wrong with that? I think Android will suit myself better so that's why I went for it.

Guess I'm the only person who wouldn't then. The current size is fine.

People tell me the note fits into pockets, but as an Infuse owner (added it to your comparison here, I can't imagine myself getting a 4.5" phone again, much less a bigger one. I can use it one handed using my thumb to hit screen elements, but I couldn't do it if the screen were any bigger (or if my hands were smaller).

I'm not a big fan of 3" screens either - too small for my tastes. I like the 4" size.

Device profile matters to some degree too. If the Infuse weren't so thin it'd be unusable.

It fits in the pocket. I have a friend who owns a dell streak and he keeps it in his pocket. The phone is HUGE and roughly the same size as the Note but he likes the huge screen. For me the note is way to big. I like the 4-4.3 in screen size.

Here we go again... Everybody bashing Samsung with no clue what they are talking about. So all the arguments against Samsung sums up to this:

1. Stylus is useless/phone becomes useless without it
The display on the Note is full capacitative and does not require Stylus, fingers do work amazing. The stylus is also not the typical $2 plastic that can used on other touchscreen. It is specifically made for the phone and has better accuracy over anything made for other tablets/phones. The only thing that had something similar that I can think of was a HP laptop. And for those that bring out SJ to the argument, he is not God, nor does he write the rules of mobile phones. Some of you always say that manufacturers are just ripping off iPhones and then when they try something new, it's stupid because SJ disagrees.

2. The phone is too big
So what? The same argument was used when the iPhone initially came out. For those that do not want to carry a phone and tablet on them, the size seems to be ideal for those people. The size of a phone should not be a criticism as it always depends on the preferences of the user.

3. Samsung is copying Apple
Euh... no? Find me an Apple cellular device that comes with a stylus pressure sensitive screen with a screen larger than 5 in

4. The ad attacks Apple and its users, WAAAAAHHHH
Stop being such a crybaby, marketing often relies on bashing the leading competitor. This happens in all industries, even drugs. Apple did this and Samsung is doing it now, people getting angry are way to sensitive, cry me a river.

5. I won't buy samsung products again!!!
You said this many times already, it is not this commercial that changed your mind.

Mind you, I have not once bashed Apple in this comment. I am not a fanboy/hater in any sort. I will never buy the Note and I will never buy a Galaxy S phone. I just find many of your arguments stupid and pointless.

CNBC just talked about adds from the Superbowl and listed the top 5 adds which generated enough buzz to get consumers to purchase the products they advertised. They base this on some advertising tracking agency which somehow measures the buzz generated by ate adds on Facebook, twitter, and other places.

Samsung was at the #5 spot. The others were Chevy, Audi, Coke, and 1 other I can't remember.
When they mentioned Samsung, they said it was for the Galaxy Tab, not the Note, but I did not see a Galaxy tab commercial. Must have been for the note. Also, the reporter was not a "tech" type of person who probably wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Not bad for a "stupid" commercial. Sounds like mission accomplished for Sammy.

I didn't switch because of the bigger screen size - although it's a nice perk. But after just shy of a week (I posted earlier in this thread) I really have no complaints overall and am really enjoying my Skyrocket. Good luck.

Not bad for a "stupid" commercial.

I will admit that the ad did have a very big atmosphere to it with people busting out of lines, people firing out of cannons and everyone singing down a crowded street :D Hard to deny the entertainment factor, even if I don't necessarily agree with the premise itself lol

Some tweets from yesterday. Undoubtedly Apple paid twitter to get palmpilot and stylus to become trending topics.

Since when did having a #stylus become a selling point?
I thought the #stylus died with the #Palm.
How was that Samsung commercial supposed to encourage phone sales? #stylus
The Palm Pilot commercial was pretty good. #stylus
Not so sure about the #Stylus. The distraction of the bright colors and sounds hasn't made me forget it's there.
Yeah, @Samsung, that's what I want, a #stylus.
Somehow The Darkness was not the most out of date element of that Samsung ad #stylus
So, the future is 90s technology? #stylus
One of the great things about the #iPhone was abandoning the #stylus. Not sure why #samsung thinks bring it back is #innovation and #freedom

This commercial is the laughingstock of the internet, yet people here defend it...strange.

Or it could be that Apple is the fashionable, "flavor of the month." If you look at how quickly Apple rose from the ashes in the late 1990s, or looked at how quickly Blackberry/RIM or Nokia fell from favor, or how quickly Samsung became one of the world's biggest cell phone sellers... you'll know that customers are fickle and unpredictable.

What you call "fickle" is really customers actually buying best of breed products. They are choosing what works best. There was a time when I swore by Nokia phones. There was a time when I wanted a Blackberry badly, but could not afford the data plan and so I stuck with my Palm Treo. Now Apple makes the best smartphone. Their customer satisfaction ratings are through the roof.

Dismissing Apple's success as simply "fashionable" is a sign of not understanding how products are sold. The factors that go into making a product great are:

1) Recognition (marketing, word of mouth, fashion)
2) Performance & Reliability (nobody likes being taken for a sucker)
3) Pricing & Availability (a bentley may be great, but i can't get one)
4) Customer Service (people like being treated well and with respect)

Apple has all four of these things going for them right now. These are fundamentals in good sales. It took years for Apple to garner the recognition after being mocked in the computing world for a decade (remember Michael Dell's comments that Apple should have closed up shop). But the performance and reliability and customer service are what predicated the recognition. The "fashion" aspect is only one aspect of recognition. The pricing on the iPhone was awful at first, but immediately altered to make it competitive, and the iPad is still the best value in tablets after shocking the market with the debut pricing.

RIM and Nokia have done some of these well in the past, but when "performance and reliability" dropped off (i.e.: the phone did not do everything the competitors could) then they lost recognition and with RIM they started to feel they were paying too much for what they were getting. From a customer service perspective Nokia and RIM they relied on the carrier to provide that way too much. Android's big surge came because of the pricing and availability at first. Android was not on par with iOS until ICS and still trails in application ecosystem (mind you iOS was not on par with Android in some aspects until iOS 5). But Android lacks the customer service and is now faced with iPhone's availability matching it.

On the Nokia front, I think Elop is a class act and is going to get Nokia going back in the right direction. I think RIM is on its way to the grave. Samsung is essentially trying to mock the "fashion" aspect of Apple's recognition in an attempt to create their own recognition -- i've never seen that work out well for anybody. Even the Mac vs PC ads never mocked a PC as being overly hyped and "all fashion". In fact they never showed the PC as being desirable at all, just cute and adorable and sadly deficient to the Mac in function and ease-of-use.

Your "flavor of the month" argument has been repeated by many over the last few years regarding Apple. Those folks are still waiting for the month to end and a new flavor to take the lead. I wonder if the length of the line they are waiting in is longer than the one depicted by Samsung in front of these Apple stores......

Maybe what you write is true.

The most interesting point I find about the whole Samsung ad is that it targets their current market. By bashing consumers that like Apple products, I doubt they will convert anyone using Apple products.

So what was the point of the ad?

Here is a funny fact. Go onto some of the Android forums and see the threads for those iPhone users who jumped ship to Android. Some complain of bugginess, but most like the change.
Another funny fact is that on Apple forums they discuss how to mode iPhones to make them look like Windows and Android phones.
On the Androidforums, they discuss modding the Android phones to make them look like iPhones.

The grass is always greener I guess.

I didn't see it as bashing Apple customers. I guess we all see things differently.
