Uhh... doesn't the Samsung Note do that?

BTW, another option is gloves with conductors that allow you to use smartphones. I think 180s and North Face make them.
I know about the gloves, but yeah, if Samsung phones really "go both ways" seamlessly, that's great! What I mean is that it can do everything with either a finger or a stylus.

I think it would be cool if there was a phone that used both a stylus and a finger interchangeably based on the user's choice. When I have gloves on, it would be nice to snap off a stylus and use the phone with warm fingers, or when I want more precision. When it's warm and/or I want to "fingerpaint" instead, I can use my oily finger. Best of both worlds. That would help sell me a new phone.

Sounds like the Galaxy Note is your next phone. Use your finger when without gloves, use the stylus when wearing gloves.

Yes you can operate all features with just the stylus or your finger. You won't be able to push the back or menu buttons, but you can press on the button on the S-Pen and slide up for menu or slide left for back. The home button is a physical button so you can either press that with your gloved hand or stab it with the stylus.

what steve meant by not to use a stylus, meant not to use the stylus for the

whole user experience. If you think carefully thats what he meant.

A stylus is okay to use for certain apps like drawing.

As long as it isn't mandatory to use the stylus, I think it's a pretty good idea for users to have the option for an alternative input method.

gos from a bunch of depressed people waiting in line to a guy getting shot out of a cannon seems legit. While on the other hand mac has thease amazing commericals that show a happy couple and stuff that is useful of the phone like siri! not a frikin pen:apple::apple:
You can't draw jack **** with siri.

Therefore, the stylus wins.

It's a bit large, but it's still something I can hold and use in one hand while fitting into my pocket. Personally I don't have any issue with the size.

Yeah, I don't have one, but I held one. It's great as a tablet and ok as a phone. However, the stylus is really welcome. Like others have stated, using the stylus for navigation isn't ideal, but for notes and drawing, it's nice. Also, the stylus slot is a good idea. As I recall, Steve lamented the use of a stylus because you tend to lose or misplace it; with the stlyus slot, this is much less of an issue.

At the end of the day this was still designed to be used with your finger so yeah I'd have to say solely using the stylus isn't great. Still- if you're wearing gloves or something and you can't push the capacitive buttons it's nice to have the option to be able to navigate around with just the S-Pen.

I think most will use it with a headset for phone calls though.

Wow. Some of you just aren't very smart, or are just unwilling to read.

The stylus used on the Note is pressure sensitive and has a fine tip. Thus it works better for drawing or writing. It is not one of those hideous fat tipped non-pressure-sensitive pens that are basically the size of your finger, rendering it completely pointless.

You are about as likely to lose it as the case on your phone, given how there's a slot on the device to hold it when not in use.

No, you do not NEED to use it. You can still use your finger

I've lost more styluses (stylii?) than I have cases (as I'm sure most will attest), so that's just BS pulled out of your ass to support your theory.

As soon as software is written FOR the stylus, you NEED the stylus. Wake up and smell the coffee.

In a few weeks Apple will be having the last laugh with the release of iPad 3 (and iPhone 5 to follow soon) thus raising the bar further out of reach from the likes of Samsung and the Copy Cats. :apple:

Actually - with a retina display iPad - a stylus would be even better for art related projects. And in case you haven't ready - there's a (small) chance that the iPad 3 won't be going anywhere pending litigation over the name iPad in China...

It's also quite likely the iPad 3 will be even more than $499, because of the more expensive high-resolution display and more powerful CPU. It will also need more RAM to deal with the extra large image buffers/textures required at that resolution.

There is *no* guarantee the iPad 3 will be the same price as the iPad 2, or that the iPad 2 will be lowered in price. Apple would have to take a huge cut on their massive margins for that to happen. Do you think that's likely?

Have they ever increased the price at a given level of device? (Honest question, I don't know, but I'm guessing not)

I'm just curious why you were quoting me since I didn't mention price at all?

Price will not be an issue for Apple. People are willing to spend more money for a quality product instead of the garbage quality devices that the competition brings to market.

Sure - but a lot of people on here assume the price will be the same, and the iPad will lower in price. I'm just pointing out there is no evidence for that.

In a way, the assumption that the iPad 3 will be the same price *is* evidence that people *are* price conscious.

Absolutely. I prefer to pay as little for Mac products as possible ( have purchased from the Apple Refurbished Store online), but will have no issue paying a higher price for the iPad 3.

I won't either. But I write iPad apps so it's a write-off for me.

Still, it would be a pleasant surprise if Apple decides to eat some of those high margins and bring out the iPad 3 at $499.
