You know the rule Alenore... One can criticize Samsung's misalignment because they lack any sense of design or quality control or whatever pointless excuse, but when Apple does it - there is purpose to it, which isn't supposed to be an excuse but the hardcore truth in disguise of the stupidest excuse ever.

This video sort of makes Apple seem stupid. Because they do this exact same ****, just in a different way. Praising their production and materials as precious jewels. Making their products more and more elitistic.

This video sort of makes Samsung seem like a stupid parody of Apple. Is it a South Korean special ability to not realise when you look dumb? "Look at our edge! Its bent! You want this!"
 
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Apple does the same. It's called following the current market or popular look.

E.g. Apple mocked smaller tablets. Then an Apple SVP used a 7" Samsung tablet and recommended that Apple make the iPad mini.

As for case looks, Apple followed everyone else into phablet sizes and even used HTC's metal case antenna design. They also were not first to use little holes for speakers on the bottom, or that curved design.

As for things like UIs, the whole point of them is to be easily understandable. Which is why it's no surprise that Apple's icons looked very similar to what others had already done.

Blatant is Apple directly copying the Swiss Railway clock dial.

Blatant is Apple using a WiFi icon that a third party developer was using. Remember that?

If you think building something bigger (when the tech already to do so before hand, no new actual new process) is a tech innovation, well you can roll you eyes in your eyes till they pop out, that won't make it so.

Apple chief copiers shouldn't be talking with thier balant copy of microsoft phones. But if it was samsung that was doing this to Apple. the fanboys would erupt. but since its Apple doing this, you could hear a pin drop with the amount of silence on the issue.

Whats so repulsive is that apple would be suing. anti-innovators. thieves.

Do I have to point you to lots of conventional watches with spinning crowns that are aligned centre?

I think the point is, there is a reason, a choice was made in the positioning of the crown. It was not placed for the convenience of manufacturing. When I see aligned vs unaligned elements in the phone comparisons it does read that it just didn't matter to the samsung designers. Or maybe they were overruled. It seems that it was allowed because it was easy.

When I see the button and stem on different lines in the Apple Watch, I may not love the choice but I know that it wasn't a arbitrary decision or one driven by the engineer packing the shell.

I used to have a job where I figured 85% of what I felt was needed would be noticed by even the most discriminating. I imagined that that 85% would be different for different people. I still aimed for 100% of my vision and hopefully settled in the high nineties. I think Apple has a similar philosophy. I think Samsung says, "close enough".

Oh, I agree. Nobody ever accused Samsung of having lots of class.

(I'm not here to defend Samsung. I wouldn't even have come into this thread, if nobody had tried to claim that known colors or style elements or icons can only be used by Apple once they copy those things for themselves.)

I think Samsung has multiple design problems, mostly based around the fact that it's a company with too many middle managers diluting designs and adding submodels. Apple is usually smart enough to avoid similar design by committee. (Usually. Some of the Apple Watch looks a bit messy in that way.)

They also try to strike out on their own at the wrong time. I can also almost guarantee that Samsung will screw their upcoming rotating bezel smartwatch's chances by making it run Tizen. Not that Android and iOS don't need a competitor; they do, because they're getting too similar and the world always needs an third option who'll take real chances. But Tizen's not that option.

Samsung also needs to concentrate on finding their own style. They do that sometimes, but then they often fall back on choosing to use too many cues from their competition. I defend their right to use common cues, but I don't think it's always smart or the best thing to do. As you said, it doesn't show class.
 
It's kind of funny that everyone is freaking out about Samsung copying Apple even though the majority of both company's video-based marketing is not done in-house by either company.

So probably more accurately: a creative agency Samsung hired copied a creative agency Apple hired.

I thought its only the GOP that recently used "elite" as an insult; though in their case it has extended to anyone with a bi-coastal or scientific education. Ironic because initially it was mostly used by Marxists and anarchists :) (you know, that whole thing about those "bourgeois pigs" (sic))

Anyway, Apple has always focused on the upper half of the middle class to rich crowd. Moneyed creatives, intellectuals, liberal arts professionals were the core of its buyers for decades. They moved a bit beyond that with the Ipod and low end Ipads, but not with the Iphone. When your cheapest phone is twice the price of the competition, it is not made for the working poor (which sadly constitute a lot of the US population).

Smart phone penetration in the US is about 75% and Apple has about 45% of that. That means about 36% of the adult population has an Iphone; a group that is mostly upmarket. About 60% of Apple's phones are sold to those which make $60K and more a year (21.5%), 80% are sold to those with more than $30K a year.

I never got that people think Apple's goal is to bring a top notch experience to the masses. It never was. That it turned out to sell so much Iphone was almost accidental (considering Jobs initial sales goal for the device).

This is part of their strategy, oddly enough. Every two years they look at global design trends and adopt them in their product lines. In the 2nd year they do their own take on the trend, but the next year it's back to bringing their product designs "on trend".

Samsung is a trend follower, not a trend setter. Perhaps that's the biggest difference between Samsung Electronics and Apple in the mobile space (Samsung is more of a trend-setter in the displays space). Still, being a follower doesn't mean BAD designs; it means not having particularly original designs.
 
If we just stay in 2015 territory then the design of the S6 is uncannily similar to the iPhone 6.

LOL after seeing all that together, how one could NOT think Samsung is blatantly ripping off Apple is amazing. My wife is currently using a GS5 and I have one as well, I used it until the 6plus came out. I simply don't like Android and feel iOS is far superior for me. I can appreciate a company trying to keep relevant, but ripping off an industry leader so obviously is nuts. :p

i don't buy this argument regarding iPhones, really. $200 is not unreachable for *most* people. often enough, an iPhone is $100 or free.

It's so sad that all that Samsung fans have left in their bag of arguments is the bigger screen size nonsense...which isn't much of an argument to begin with. Posts like yours destroy their arguments and should settle the debate, but minutes later a post is created, perhaps in this same thread, where some Samsung fans scream, "SCREEN SIZE".

That's all they've got left...since Samsung took the water resistance and removable battery talking points away from them.

Anyone who is informed on what is going on in the tech industry (the people who visit tech blogs and forums) should be embarrassed to own a Samsung phone.

The phone is not $200. That's the cashdown for the phone.
You pay for it in the expensive plans people need to get the Iphone.

When you buy a phone on contract it is:
Cashdown + Payments of loan every month for the rest on contract.
Those payments may or may not be included/obfuscated in the price of the plan (Tmobile has the payments separate), it doesn't matter, you're still paying for it.

Most of the under $30K wage Iphone buyers (20% of Apple's US sales) probably do buy their phones on contract. They could also buy it on their low interest credit card, or margin of credit if they have any. Same thing really except the terms aren't fixed.

Anyway, the demographics of Iphone buyers say that it is so, that you believe it or not doesn't matter : it is reality.

Because you're seeing half the story presented by Apple. If you look at the other story presented by Samsung, you would realize that Apple has done it's fair share of copying.

Also, Samsung is a market leader in smartphones :p But that probably is a moot point because we would queue the "they make more phones", "they just copy apple", "samesung hahahaha I'm clever" arguments.

Samsung spends many tens of millions of advertising (went into the multi hundred million range last year) and yes, I do think they'd be interested in how it goes ;-). Usually all those spendings are part of a marketing campaign, which has a message; and it is a certainty that the company has a say on this if not the minutiae of every single thing that's released.
 
I'm honestly getting sick of those "we create magic, everything is magical and spectacular and incredible and fascinating" and only we can do it ******** commercials. And the sentimental music, British accents and slow-mo shots of melting metal and glass are getting ridiculously cheese. Barf... It's a ******* phone, get over yourself... Has anyone noticed how every time a new iPhone is unveiled the presentation starts with "this is the best iPhone we've ever build." No ****... I would hope it's the best device you've ever created. It's freaking new! It's not like you're going to say "this **** is way worse than the stuff we made last year but we thought **** it, let's not bother this year." Duh!

It will be really fun watching those commercials again in 20 years when the technology is so painfully outdated it's funny. Find cure for cancer or solve world hunger and then you can have yourself a British-acceted, I'm the biggest **** in the universe, magical commercial with a lame ass sentimental tune to boot.
