Personally having checked out the Sammy, whilst it isn't bad I don't think it has the quality of the Xperia, which for my money is right up there with Apple.

Ever been to Europe?

Mercedes, Audi and BMW cater to the 'upper' tier of cars here in the US, but in Europe, they're in every other driveway. To own a Mercedes in Germany is about as common as a Chevy cobalt, scion xB, Toyota Corolla, or Ford Focus is here.

And yes, they're more expensive, but they also buy cars differently than we do.

I personally drive one (a Mercedes), but I don't consider myself anything other than a 'common man'.

Well, maybe your deluding yourself then. If you make in the top 20% of the population (where 90% of BMW and Mercedes buyers live), you can't call yourself the common man. You are a man, possibly even a good man, but not the common man...

The ratio of other cars sold to premium/luxury cars sold in Europe is 6 to 1. Yes, that large. Considering car ownership in Europe is lower than in the US (meaning, many people can't afford cars at all, not surprising considering the prices to buy, maintain and put gas in).

These are the actual numbers of cars sold in Europe in Q1 2015

What you mean myself and the other retirees?

I see how it is now. You are retired, yet you are privy to the going-ons in a tech company.

Given that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery I can't see why you're all getting your knickers in a twist.

It is usually the case that when someone in a forum resorts to using the phrase "nickers in a twist", it is because they have their nickers in a twist. ;)

Yes, Mac and Windows are also better for the tech-illiterate than is Ubuntu.

I switched to Linux Mint because Ubuntu is junk. Anyhow, Linux is more of a laborer OS since it's used mostly for serving content. Majority of the professional design software such as OrCAD, CATIA, SolidWorks, Inventor, etc. are on Windows.

Why are you kissing up to Linux anyway when you're flying the BSD Daemon?

hilarious

That is hilarious. I always find the Jony Ives videos to be humorously cheesy, Samsung has upped the ante on the game of copying.

I lived there for almost two years, you definitely know what you are talking about.

Wow this is crazy, obviously it works though. The edge is a handsome phone although the design comes across a bit gimmicky.

samsung just replaced Apple as the underdog in the last 10 years, so TONS of people feel the need to support them. too bad they're such a loser of a company.
what people seem to really like about the anti-apple lifestyle is Android - developed by Google. ironic, considering the notion they're searching for that 'underdog status.' of course, this really only applies to vocal fandroids, not really average users who don't give a rip and just prefer one thing over another.

There are Unix distribution that are mostly for high performance embedded systems, those are even more nose to the grindstone. Hey, why not just code out own OS :).

I find the whole an OS is for tech illiterate completely ridiculous. The OS is a tool to get things done. If it allows you to do that without getting to much in the way (or even helping you be more efficient, or comfortable while doing it), well great, it has done its job well.

Do you really want to thinker with your power drill or the OS on your consumer electronics (TV, stereo, car, they all have one these days), most people don't (even Nobel prize winners and embedded engineers). They just want to take their drill, or get into their car and use it.

Exactly why I and other CS people here use Macs. I swear, most of the students here who try to use something Linux-based as their main OS on their PCs only do it to look cool. As if they need the speed and customizability to do programming homework. I've got a VirtualBox VM on my Mac in case I really need BSD or Linux for something, no big deal.

Who says I'm kissing up to Linux? I do like BSD better... on my server. I use a Mac for school/work/home use. The whole "tech-illiterate" stereotype some people hold against Mac users is nonsense.

I messed around with Linux-based OSs a lot at some point, and WTH happened to Ubuntu since I last tried it in 2008?! As you said, it's absolute junk now. I liked regular Debian the best because LinuxMint was nice but kinda slow after version 8.

Why are you even bringing up Mac? We were discussing the limitations and restrictions of iOS. Why kiss up to Apple and apologize when people can pressure them to allow the basics and fix that awful keyboard with keys in UPPERCASE. If it wasn't for smart consumers pressuring Apple to upgrade DRAM to 2GB on the iPad Air 2 we'd all be suffering still with browser and app reloads.

Today's Ubuntu is crap compared to the Ubuntu I was using in the past. Why did they have to make it so damned .... user friendly?

Granted, it's been about 7-8 years in between the last time I used it to the time I loaded up an image recently in Parallels...

That's funny you say that because that's how working professionals think of Mac OS X that it's for a bunch of still-in-school hipsters who want to look cool checking Facebook. At least Linux runs the majority of the internet and has a large presence in the data centers of most companies.

Yes, Linux runs on the servers; doesn't necessarily mean it's any good on a PC. There are plenty of professional programmers who use Macs, including almost every single one who makes iOS apps, and plenty who use Linux. Use whatever works the best. But among students, I notice that most of them do not use Linux for any good reason.

If you want to complain about hipsters/neckbeards/fedora-tippers, the community of people who use Linux on their PCs is much more saturated with them. Probably stems from the free software thing.

With sliding financial performance and desperate moves like the above, another person's observation that “Samsung is basically a cover band at this point" is an astute observation

Heh, they're a cover band...

exactly see apple gets it. which is why they copied samsung and went the way of the phablet :D

You cannot "copy" a screen size.

Screen size is simply a decision.

You can make an LCD panel in pretty much any size imaginable... and then design a device around it.

This commercial... however... really looks like a straight-up copy. The mood, the imagery, the voiceover...

Come on... that wasn't an accident!

Apple uses a British guy for their voiceovers... but he's actually their Senior VP of Design, Jony Ive.

So why did a South Korean company use a British voiceover actor?

Was that just another coincidence?

lol when I attend Microsoft TechEd all the presenters are running Macbook Pro, same when you see photos inside googles offices.
