The reason Apple haven‘t made their own is because they haven’t made much interesting at all lately. They got scared and stopped innovating to stay ahead of others which means it gets less and less interesting to be in the ecosystem. I think their current “same as last year but slightly faster” is getting old fast, which means I gotta look elsewhere for innovation.
The flip and fold are almost identical to last year. Your point falls flat in this situation.

Personally i’m enjoying the ecosystem and especially with ios17 with continuity camera on the Apple TV. Their products work seamlessly together and are getting better.

I am after a better experience and content in my life. Not shiny new things.

All the cries of Apple no longer innovating seem to ignore the vision pro that they just recently announced in June. It seems clear to me that rather than say Apple can’t innovate in foldables, what’s actually happening is Apple drawing a line in the sand and saying that they are wearables representing the future of mobile technology, and not folding phones.

This is the bet Apple is making, and one thing I have learnt over the years - one bets against Apple to their own detriment.

flip design: neither this nor that. It's either too small when closed and too big when open.

Galaxy Z Fold5 v/s iPhone 14 Pro

It's interesting to see the differences in what they are advertising. Whilst there are some similarities in the content (Nit Brightness, Chip version)

Samsung:
Storage Size, Memory size, Flex Hinge, Battery Size, IPX rating, Thickness/Weight, S-Pen

Apple:
Promotion, Dynamic Island, Ultra Wide, Action Mode, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via Satellite, Mag Safe, All-day battery life

One of these advertisements is almost all about stats, whilst the other is about function. I'm not suggesting either phone is better than the other; it is just interesting that they either appeal to the person or appeal to the geek. I just don't think the average person cares about an 18% CPU upgrade or the number of mAh the battery has.

I honestly might switch to Z Flip 5 and the watch. I am so bored of the iPhone. Coming from a 13 Pro to a 15 Pro and series 5 watch to series 9 is not even going to feel like much of an upgrade. I have been holding out for a watch redesign and it looks like the 9 will be exactly the same. Apple could really lead innovation again if they wanted but are being lazy because they still get sales. Disappointing

Samsung today announced the launch of its fifth-generation foldable smartphones, introducing the Galaxy Z Flip5 and the Galaxy Z Fold5. Samsung has been producing foldable smartphones since 2019, and the latest models have a range of new features that improve upon the foldable design.

The Galaxy Z Flip5, priced starting at $1,000, is Samsung's smartphone that folds in half. When unfolded, it measures in at 6.7 inches, and when closed, there is a 3.4-inch interactive Flex Window available, which is the best new feature. Prior models had a small window that showed the time, notifications, camera controls, and other limited information, but the expanded window is 3.78 times bigger and almost functions as a full smartphone display.

In addition to supporting clocks that can match the face of Samsung's latest watches or Flipsuit Cases, the Flex Window supports widgets for checking the weather, taking and editing photos, texting, controlling music, making payments, browsing social networks, and even watching YouTube videos.

The flip design allows users to take hands-free selfies when the phone is half open, and there is a Dual Preview mode that lets a person being photographed see the result and make adjustments in real time. There are improved "Nightography" capabilities that optimize photos in situations with low light, and there's an AI-powered noise correction feature.

Camera hardware has not seen notable updates, with the Z Flip5 featuring a 10-megapixel selfie camera, a 12-megapixel ultra wide camera, and a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold5 is its flagship foldable smartphone, priced starting at $1,800. The Galaxy Z Fold5 opens like a book, and there is a new Flex Hinge design that improves the folding functionality. Samsung says that the Galaxy Z Fold5 is its thinnest and lightest Fold yet, and it is paired with a slimmer, more compact S Pen Fold.

There is a 6.2-inch Cover Screen that's usable as a standard smartphone when the Galaxy Z Fold5 is closed, and a 7.6-inch AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate when the device is unfolded. The main display's brightness has increased by upwards of 30 percent for improved viewing in bright sunlight.

Fold4 (top) vs. Fold5 (bottom)

The Galaxy Z Fold5 is powered by the Snapdragon Gen 2 mobile platform (as is the Flip5). Samsung improved the software-based Taskbar of the device by allowing for quick switching between frequently used apps, and there is a two-handed drag and drop for moving content between apps.

Cameras include a 10-megapixel selfie camera, a 4-megapixel under display camera, a 12-megapixel rear ultra wide camera, a 50-megapixel rear wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel rear telephoto camera. Other features include 12GB memory, up to 1TB internal storage, a 4,400mAh battery, and a fingerprint sensor.

Along with new smartphones, Samsung today also introduced the Galaxy Watch6 series and new Galaxy Tab tablets. The Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic feature slimmed-down bezels, 20 percent larger displays, improved peak brightness, longer battery life, and an improved user interface.

Health features include sleep score calculations, sleep consistency ratings, body composition measurements, personalized heart rate zone information, fall detection, irregular heart rhythm notifications, menstrual cycle tracking, and skin temperature measurements. Pricing starts at $300 for the Galaxy Watch6 and $400 for the Galaxy Watch6 Classic.

The Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, and S9 Ultra feature 11-inch, 12.4-inch, and 14.6-inch display sizes, respectively. The S9+ and S9 Ultra have dual rear camera setups, with all three tablets offering on-screen fingerprint recognition, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chips, and S Pen support... Oh.

Don't care. I wish Apple would copy Samsung's folding phones.
The last thing I would want is for Apple to copy Samsungs folding phones. I want Apple to do it right if they do it at all. There are much better versions of folding phones out there than Samsung. I think the iPhone is heavy enough already without adding bulk, weight, and a crease down the middle of the screen. And I don't care for a Dynamic Crease, which is what it would have to be called if Apple copied the Samsung experience.

Did you get to play the video?

Samsung copying Apple’s intro transition across. 🤔
I think it's funny people talk about how innovative Samsung are, yet in advertising they either directly bash Apple (which always looks horrible just before they copy them), or they copy them outright and still look bad.

The Apple Watch Ultra. It beats ALL of the smartwatch competition. However, I think it's generally about the extra functions they get and how they integrate with each other. Homekit, Airdrop, Handoff, Continuity (all the Apple Buzz words). I would not go over to Android because they just don't work together as well as the Apple Ecosystem does. I'd miss all of those features too much.

However, I understand that you might want something new/fresh. I think every Apple fan would be on your side here.

Outside of minor bumps (and a new hinge), the Fold hasn't changed since Version 3 and the Flip has got a new hinge and CPU. Yup. Innovation. For individual phone sales, the iPhones are 8 of the top 10 selling phones in the world. I think consumers are getting what they want. The Objective Top 10 Phone List 2022

And a bigger, more useful, front screen. (The flip). Also better battery life. Building a better platform on top of real innovation. yep.

I agree, though you don't need an ultra, the normal Apple Watch is better than any android version. And I don't even use homekit (I use Alexa), only airdropped like twice, usually use my LAN, I never use handoff or continuity.

Apple copies Samsung too. Not sure the fixation on seeing it only going one way. Waiting for Apple to "do it right" is an age long gone. "It just works" hasn't been an Apple thing for a long time.

Pretty cool tech. The aspect ratio of the larger folding phone looks much better than the other one someone recently showed me, which folds out to a big square. Samsung must keep Apple on their toes whenever they throw a handful of new products into the world, even though Samsung don't seem to fully "get" what really makes Apple products so popular.

I think the flip is far more useful than the fold for me. It’s lovely looking. As far as comparing it to the overall functions of the iPhone 14 Pro for the same price? Not even close. For example, the 2023 Z Flip 5 has a camera that is not even as good as the 2019 iPhone 11 (DxoMark), and let’s be honest, it’s the single most important differentiator for the majority of people. They have deliberately tanked the camera. There is no point innovating and reducing its quality. That’s not real innovation, that’s making choices and they have prioritised form over function.

I think it’s great that they’ve made this as it provides people choices. I choose to have a more functional smartphone, not one to make me look cool. I gave up that years ago, if I ever had it.

I have the Apple Watch 8 and wish I got the Ultra, if for no other reason than the better screen. Things like HomeKit v Alexa, Google etc is an eco system thing I think.

Lolol! Apple copied Samsung by removing the headphone Jack, the power brick (after making fun of them), the ads, the entire smartphone, the Samsung Experience Store?

Apple have definitely taken some Android features in software, and they have added hardware features available to other devices first, like Qi charging, but pray tell what have they actually copied from Samsung? I think there must some, but I just can’t think of any. Anyway, I’m not here to argue the virtues of one over the other. I think the Flip looks fantastic, and if Apple did a version that was as functional as an iPhone Pro I would be in straight away, regardless who they copied.

Edit: As long as it wasn’t US $2000 v $1200

I can't imagine spending $1800 on a gadget that breaks in one year. In fact, I don't even have $1800.

Samsung has been at it for 5 years now, Apple hasn't followed.

Because the foldables are still a niche product - how many have you seen in the wild? If Apple learn that most people want a foldable phone, they will do it, no question, presenting their “magic” and “revolutionary” version of it and charging for it accordingly, LOL.

We'll just have to disagree about the camera being the most important thing on a phone as it's definitely not my most important thing. I need a camera, yes, but a 4 megapixel one would do, and it's never in my wheelhouse to shop by camera capability. My pictures are most often small things like serial numbers and such, for recordkeeping and being able to read them. As for most people, I wouldn't know, but I see very few people taking a lot of pictures. Maybe for people that can take a lot of vacations or have young kids.

The innovation in the flip is all in the form factor and what you can do because it's not just a flat slab laying there on the table. And Android is not nearly as dysfunction as a lot of people around here think! So for me, the more functional phone is the the flip, not the iPhone, and no, I don't own one to make me look cool, lol! I'm a 63 year old disabled man. I couldn't possibly care about looking cool!

I don't really focus on ecosystem stuff, I buy what works best for me and what I want. Alexa works, siri, well, doesn't. Google works better than siri, but not as well as alexa. I have had them all to try. :). I have both an iPhone 14Pro and a Flip4, a V6 Apple watch, a samsung watch, a couple macs, a couple windows pcs, many VM's of various OS's, so ecosystem really isn't a thing for me. I also have multiple iPads and ipad Pros, Apple TV, and even a samsung tablet that has the best screen.

I'm a little unsure on the Ultra watch, it seems like it would be too big for my wrist, though I may get one sometime. I haven't updated my A watch in a while, it does what I want...

I don't know why you think they all break after a year, nobody would buy them again if that happened to everyone, and we wouldn't be on the 5th gen! $1800 is too much, I agree, but the flip isn't any more than an iPhone pro.

You don’t have to come up with something completely new every year. But Apple is still on more or less the same slab they introduced 16 years ago, it is definitely faster though.

I like the ecosystem too, but usability is also important as well as having been using more or less same slab for 16 years is just boring. I think the slab format is useless for using it for more than texting/calling and scrolling Reddit when out and about. Need a larger screen to do something useful on it like reading books/articles, browsing the web, fixing any settings with my smart home/router and so on.

My iPad mini is too big to fit in a pocket so I just use it at home which means that on the go I have nothing to use to do anything actually useful so in many cases I get to just stare at a wall instead. Same goes for going to the office, Samsung has it’s DeX which means I could connect to a VDI while docked at a desk instead of having to carry my laptop/iPad Pro with me.

So as it stands right now I have to choose the comforts of my phone integrating with other units and generally just working well when it comes to stuff like the digital key for my car and so on. Or having a device in my pocket that is actually useful for things other than just being a phone and a music player. I wish Apple made a foldable so I didn’t have to choose but right now I am on the fence which is more important to me.

I really like my Fold 3 so much I've already ordered an upgrade to the Fold 5 via my carrier as I'm due an upgrade. I still wish Apple made a foldable, hopefully as the market for foldables matures they will. I use it more than my iPad for content consumption. My fold has functioned without issue, no screen issues and I don't baby the device.

I think we generally agree. We just have different use cases. I was a CSI for 25 years in an Australian State, and at least the last 5 years before I retired 2 years ago, I used the iPad daily at work for many tasks. During that time and since, I have been a professional photographer (including real estate) and only just stopped. I don’t recommend the camera for pro photos, but absolutely for video and other functions. So the quality and the lidar on both devices have been super important to me. I see them as work devices, but they also have a strong use case for quality travel photos (daytime). My recent trip to Lapland, I lugged my Canon with me, but I’m seriously considering getting the 'best' camera phone for my next trip just for the photos. It’ll no doubt be an Android but some of those cameras are ridiculous.

However the form factor of the Z Flip is gorgeous and has very strong original Motorola RAZR vibes. I just wish they didn’t compromise the stuff I see as important for me. Different use cases. 👍
