That edge is actually really gross. I hope Apple never.

But if Apple rolled this out, I bet "gross" would flip to "cool" and "we" would be gushing love for such a feature to no end.

Note 4 looks nice....otherwise....I'm not sure where they're going with the "edge" and the Galaxy S looks absolutely huge and bulky.....

To you and others who are saying this - what about this design is interesting? Merely because it's different? I'm curious what benefits this would offer? What issues does this solve?

See post 170 (it has pictures too). One could leave the main screen off and still get their alerts & notifications at a glance. Something important enough to address immediately? Fire up the phone and do so. Not important enough for immediate action? You still got the core message.

Apparently, the iWatch may do some of this very same stuff. And "we're" all apparently ready to pay extra for that.

Some people will never understand the benefit until Apple makes a similar move. Then it will suddenly become wonderful, awesome, magnificent etc.

Unfortunately, this is SO true. Bigger screen phones were "abominations", "UFC was "useless" and "stupid", "1080p was a gimmick" (when :apple:TV was limited to 720p playback) and on and on. Then, Apple switches and Apple stuff is never tagged "abominations", "stupid", etc. Dazzling how that works… EVERY TIME.

So the edge makes it impossible to put a case on it so when you drop it, it's guaranteed to break it. Good idea.

No, it simply uses a different kind of case that will show that edge… much like iDevice cases are designed to still yield access to ports. In fact, my own iDevice case is such that I can see almost the entire edge on 3 sides. It's not impossible to build a good case that would expose this edge on one side.

Who are you guys kidding? The Note Edge is an abomination of design.

Abomination is a term heavily used by this crowd when Apple deemed 3.5" and then 4" as the "perfect" sizes of iPhone screens. All sizes above were bashed as "abominations", "stupid" and "99% don't want". Now that it seems very likely that Apple is about to roll out bigger screens, apparently they are no longer abominations and/or that other 1% is about to buy tens of millions of abominations from Apple. Funny how that works too… EVERY TIME.

Or makes the operating system actually not require it [more than 1GB RAM]. I know that more would d be useful in SOME applications. but it;s actually just a lazy workaround for programmers

Or if Apple would put in more than 1GB, that more efficient OS could still be just as efficient but have more space available to do it's thing. A multitasking OS with a 64bit processor could definitely work better with more RAM. What do you think this is- an Amiga?

If you genuinely believe it's about managing "lazy programmers" Apple could cap the RAM available to any given program at some level <1GB so that extra RAM strictly exists for better multitasking and tangible issues like tab reloads.

WhoTF wants to multitask on a phone in separate app windows? I can understand that with tablets, not phones.

It has it's applications- anytime it would be helpful to have one app open while using another. I just needed to see a list in one app while using another. Flipping back & forth was a pain. Even on a phone screen, being able to split screen could have tangible benefits… especially on phone screens bigger than 4"

Does anything Samsung revealed blow you away? Their model is pretty simple. Add a bunch of "specs" to an oversized case and a few gimmicky features. They haven't innovated on anything.

The rule seems to be "Specs don't matter" when Apple is on the wrong end of that but "Specs matter" when Apple's specs are better.

Wow, all that crap is UGLY. The watch faces look like something your mom would pick out for graduation

Try to imagine how any singular design of a watch is going to look fantastic to everyone. Watches are jewelry. We've got 100+ years of being exposed to them in every shape, size, color, style, material, etc. Can Apple make one that would be more attractive to you? Sure. Can they make one that will be attractive to everybody? I don't see how. Jewelry begs for design diversity. In jewelry, buyers want something that seems special rather than an exact copy of something worn by everyone else.

And if Apple released an iPhone 6 with a display like the Edge it would be front page news.

Correct. "We" would "gush" love at the incredible innovation of that edge and spin the potential when the developers take full advantage of it.

Curved wrap-around glass, because we thought a 10,000% greater likelihood* of a minor drop shattering the glass on your display was exactly what you wanted.

And yet "we" are ready to embrace Sapphire which is MORE brittle than Gorilla Glass. Plus, when it shatters, there's a possibility the replacement part will ONLY be available from Apple and will very likely be priced for the much higher cost of Sapphire instead of glass.

1.9 GHz octo-core, erm am i the only one to be confused as to why you would ever need those clock speeds?

Why do we need an A8 when everything that can be done in iOS apps can be done by A7s. Why do we need A7s when almost everything that can be done in iOS apps can be done with A6s? Etc. We have no problem with Apple building newer, faster processors. But we fault the other guys based on "why would we ever need"???

The always are... but nothing compares to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7qTHbOEiDY

The Note edge is actually something new! I like the idea of having a notifications control bar on the side. Certainly something smash able though! And something Fragemented again ;)

Does make me chuckle that they bring out a VR headset that is not compatible with only the note.. not ht enot edge. It's really arse from elbow stuff. They just don't seem to have any cohesion with their products... Just shove out any old junk and see what people buy.

OMG, couldn't stop laughing. And of course Balmer had to be there. That was insanely funny. Thanks for the share.

But yeah, something new and innovating. Very cool. I do like the curved watch. The CEO is wearing one on stage and doesnt' look bulky or stupid.

I'm actually glad that Samsung did not do 64 bit. It should go first in the Nexus phone or tablet with proper amounts of ram (4GB) running stock Android as the template. Google should lead first and Samsung (and others) should follow.

Instead, it went to a company that has 1 GB of RAM and their cult members saying "it's all that it needs."

And as for Samsung VR? I really, really, don't get how Samsung believes that we'll accept people wearing this:

Hard to know where to start with this one isn't it! lol

Not seen any articles about virtual reality and the Oculus Rift have you over the past couple of years?

If its a thing that has no interest to you then fair enough, but many, and I mean MANY are looking forward to this very much.

Yes. Why can Samsung make elegant small bezels and Apple can not??

With Samsung, more of the phone size is dedicated to screen. Apple, gives you wasted space.

I don't actually like the idea of a wraparound. I may be gay but still.... it's like meh... especially for a phone. It's too easy for accidents to happen.

So, let me get this straight: Samsung releases 1 big phone, THEN releases another, JUST THE SAME, but with a curved edge, for extra stuff?

See, this is why its Samsung, and not Apple. Apple would be confident that people, for example, would love the curved device, and so wouldn't bother offering twice. It's like Samsung is afraid that people would like just the regular one, and not the Curved one. If so, why bother developing the curved one in the first place...

It's the same reason why Apple is releasing both a 4.7" and 5.5" phone. What if Apple went straight to 5.5"? I think Apple is starting to realize that people have different taste. Same thing going on here; one has a traditional display and the other has a curve. I think it would have been disastrous to release only the curved model.
Gotta give Samsung credit. Many people in the industry laughed at them when they heard that Samsung was releasing a 5.3" phone. Today we are on the Note 4 talking about it in a Apple forum. In a few years you may have some type of curve in every phone.

Every stylus of every product?

Or just on a phone?
Or on a phone and a tablet?

Please Clarify.

IMO it is a gimmick for a smart phone.

Depending on the kind of stylus, I have a seen some decent usages for graphic artist when working on iPad or tablet.

To be fair regarding watch faces: I haven't seen anyone* actually wearing a watch in going on five years. All watches look anachronistic and frankly fugly these days.

* excluding *******s who buy expensive watches as a status symbol, which is why I associate watch-wearing with douche-baggery more and more...

Wait, so let me get this straight. My $50 Timex is a "douchebag status symbol" more than the $700 iPhone you have in your hand? And what the he** is "anachronistic" about wearing a device that *works*? As for not seeing anyone wear a watch in the last 5 years, maybe you need to get out more? I live I NYC and on the subway I can count easily dozens of men and women wearing wristwatches every single day. I'm wearing one right now because I like to know what time it is without digging out my damned phone. It's a timex, but I also own an old stainless steel Omega I wear if I'm getting dressed up. Let me guess, you're wearing sweatpants right now aren't you?

That Note Edge is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

This made me L0L

The "edge" looks weird to me when I first saw it, mainly because of the unsightly left side bezel. If that was way thinner, it would probably look better. Other than that I think the iPhone Air (5.5") will be a competitor mainly because the resolution is basically up to par with the Note 4.

Whoa that curved display is awesome! Nice to see innovation its going to be a great year for tech!

I kind of like these alternative articles. It's nice seeing what competitors are doing. Can't just be completely blind.

But at the same time Sony had a big event and Asus released a decent looking smartwatch. My issue with MacRumors is that they only focus on Samsung and no one else. To me it's either you do everybody or you just talk about Apple. Tomorrow Motorola is going to have a big event and I doubt that we will see any news on that front.
Should just call the site MacSamRumors or is that SamMacRumors?

Hope it goes down more tbh, Hopefully apple get back to innovation and changing phones look completely when they see it.

Innovation is a funny thing. Not so sure that Samsung has done much here, except a reactionary release in anticipation of what Apple is going to deliver. Yes, Samsung is delivering heavily spec'd devices for people who are big into specs, maybe a smidgen of innovation with the curved context-based display (depends on how well it works), but not much of anything else. Still relatively square smartphones/phablets, relatively square watch. No major changes to form factor. Which will be the same with Apple's release. What are you seeing that I'm not?

The ones using the screen pression-sensitive digitizers are not gimmicks

I think they were more after an explanation of what it can be used for, not how well it works.

I have a sub-group of friends that have notes, and never use the stylist. It all depends on what applications you use, if you take notes, if you draw, or if you need it as an accessibility feature.

FWIW the notes I used, the stylus worked quite well!

Good thing I came to MacRumors today for this solid bit of Apple news.

If you have been around long enough, you know that this has to do with apple, FYI that is a list of products that can compete with apple products, that is the only reason it is there.

I'm actually glad that Samsung did not do 64 bit. It should go first in the Nexus phone or tablet with proper amounts of ram (4GB) running stock Android as the template. Google should lead first and Samsung (and others) should follow.
64bit is not just about 4 GB over especially for a mobile OS

Dito the idea of adding in different input devices will mean a stylus is being used like a finger with no advantage and if you have a model without it you need to disable anything that can only be used with the stylus. It adds nothing that helps you.

No. Do you know what a Wacom is?

You guys need to quit your bitching about these types of articles. No, it isn't about an Apple product. But it IS directly related to Apple in that it's their main competition. I, for one, like seeing what the competition is up to without having to go to some Android blog. It's not like these articles flood MR daily.

Your constant complaining is far more annoying than the occasional article about Samsung hardware.

There's a million tech sites that cover Samsung products though.

The better specs, the more your phone can do and the better a tool it becomes. It doesn't need to look pretty, it needs to be functional for as many roles as possible, especially if I am going to be spending $500-$1000 on it.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Simplicity and ease of use are far more important to me than every feature under the sun.

Love it ,
Although im not a fan of sammy releasing 30 phones in a year, their flagships are sexy.

I have the S5 right now, will most likely switch back to apple with the iphone 6, but I love the big screen now, can't go back to small.

Hard to know where to start with this one isn't it! lol

Not seen any articles about virtual reality and the Oculus Rift have you over the past couple of years?

I've seen them, and their predecessors for many years now. The narrative has been the same: everyone oohs and ahhs over the big clunky thing you wear on your head that makes you see pretty things. Then after the initial awe fades, everyone forgets about it. Because at the end of the day, people don't like wearing a big clunky thing on your head to see pretty things over an extended period of time.

If its a thing that has no interest to you then fair enough, but many, and I mean MANY are looking forward to this very much.

Let me know how long you end up using yours before you're tired of it. :)
