People will wait for the X. The high price ensures high profit per unit. The X is the flagship Apple iPhone and if you were willing to spent $949 on a 256GB iPhone 8 Plus then another $200 for the 256GB iPhone X is almost lost in the noise, other than the psychological barrier of spending more than $1000 on a phone, though to some buyers the high price is part of the attraction of the X.

The iPhone 8 Plus is not a flagship. Its screen is smaller, and lower resolution than the less expensive Galaxy S8, let alone the S8+. and it lacks several of the features of the Galaxy S8. That's why no one was lining up for the iPhone 8. It will still sell well as those with the iPhone 6s begin to upgrade, but it's not something that many Apple fans will want.

What significant Galaxy S8 features does it lack? I understand the benefits of the Note 8, and S-Pen, but I am struggling to understand the significant differences of the S8 outside of the screen resolution.

You do realize there are features on the iPhone that Samsung doesn’t have, 3D Touch being one that some Apple users enjoy / would miss.

The Samsung Experience UX is a experience within itself giving you more software features (split screen etc.) than any iPhone. Maybe that's what the OP met. Samsung also has a 3D-touch like home button under the display and the entire screen has haptic feedback including the keyboard. Let's not even get to the S8 having a faster point and shoot camera than any new iPhone and iP68 waterproof instead of iP67 and stereo audio recording unlike the iPhone as well. Of course, the Samsung display on their own flagship devices are always better and the display is the primary hardware feature you interact with.

Seeing the phones lined up like this is just embarrassing for Apple. It doesn't look like a phone of the future compared to the S8, it just looks like a compromised design where the function follows form.

I don’t understand it either. People need to find something to complain about I guess. I look at it as bonus pixels for status indicators.

I guess those people would never buy a new car with LCD gages, because very few have exact rectangle displays. Which makes for wasted space as well.

The difference between the X's notched display and the vehicle gauges is that the gauges aren't intended to be be used regularly to watch rectangular video content. The gauges are designed for a specific purpose that isn't affected by having dead space, while one of the most obvious purposes of the phone is legitimately affected by the existence of the notch.

Quite an interesting and no doubt tricky position for Samsung - as a supplier and competitor they must have an almost unparalleled level of insight into the direction and future of the iPhone, even only supplying individual parts and not having full sight of the whole.

I can imagine however that the comprehensive contracts that must be in place between them and Apple will restrict them from acting on this in some ways.

Samsung is in a win-win situation no matter how you look at it. They manage to make money off the Apple customers who will never consider buying Samsung phones.

Damn that iPhone looks so much better than the galaxy, which pretty much looks like every buttonless smart phone.

Gladly embrassing iPhones new style.

Huh????? De Galaxy S8 and Note 8 are by far the most beautifull phones in the world.
The iphone is a very bad copy of these 2 with a hidious ink spot at the top, not bezelless and a hidious camera bump on the back.

Come on, get real.

It should be pretty cut and dry. Apple enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship to Samsung Semiconductor (chips) and, now, Samsung Display (OLED). The relationship is worth billions of dollars. They would not risk this business with Apple by sharing the details with Samsung Electronics.

Dream on that Apple will sell 130 milloen iphones X. NEVER.
Just watch you-tube movies and read the comments. LOTS and I mean huge amounts op iphone users switch to Android because they are done with Apple.

Sales numbers of the iphone 8 (plus) are ver bad. The iphone X is far too expensive for such a limited smartphone with old technology.

Seeing the X and the S8 side by side like that really shows how ugly the S8 is. Apple hit it out of the park with the X design, absolutely beautiful. You can pretty much guarantee the S9 will adopt a similar design as the X, Samsung will Samsung.

This comparison makes no sense. My 8 Plus with its fat bezels at least provides me with a 5.5" screen that doesn't obstruct the content displayed of my phone in any way. There's a huge difference between a stale design and a BAD user experience.

Yeah, in return it needs a brick sized space in your pocked.....so yeah...you are right.
These fat bezels in 2017 are just hedius, sorry.

Too bad the S8 doesn't have a telephoto lens like my iPhone 7. The S8 may have a "faster point and shoot camera" but I've been able to use my telephoto lens for over a year now. Nice to see Samsung play catch up.

Lol what? The galaxy design is far from bezeless. Best in the world? lol

Gee man, feel free to obstruct your own phone (or Macbook, iMac...) screen with any notches, nozzles or bars, round or hexagon corners, whether in hardware or software, but give us people a rectangular screen, please.

2 Suggestions for you.
Don’t buy it if it bothers your eyes
Stop crying about it and let hundreds of millions enjoy it.
By the way it is rectangular, with a little notch, which I think it looks cool.

The Mac uses the same processor and chip set as Windows machines. While Hackintosh is interesting to do, the reality is that there's little reason to do it since so many applications are Windows-only. You saw a lot more Mac owners installing Windows on their machines, especially Macbooks, than Windows machine owners going the Hackintosh route. Also, while it's easy to build a Hackintosh desktop, not many laptops are suitable for a Hackintosh conversion.
It is also much more difficult and expensive to install MacOS / OSX on a PC than to install Windows on a Mac. Apple supports licensed Windows OS on its hardware, making it trivial to install and run it; Hackintoshes are not supported by either Apple or Microsoft. The PC hardware and EFI firmware must be customized to run MacOS (expensive and time consuming), and there is the danger of system failure with every MacOS patch or update. I've often wished that Apple would make their OS compatible with PCs, but they'd be in danger of making MacOS as kludgy as Windows since it would have to be so generalized to support a plethora of hardware platforms.

The S8 really doesn't need it and still beats the iPhone 7 in most camera tests. :D

What do you mean 3D Touch like home button? 3D Touch is a pressure sensitive screen that gives you contextual menus, and other functions based upon how it was implemented by the developers. I think you are confusing it with TouchID.

I agree, screens are the true killer feature of Samsung phones, but of those high points you list are software related to Android more than Samsung specifically.

The s8 doesn’t have stereo mics, it has an interview mode that uses both mics to produce better audio during an interview. Neat feature, but I have a feeling the iphone does this too, as I have never had an issue hearing myself during audio interviews. There are 3rd party stereo mic hardware solutions for both phones though. If the S8 has Stereo mic capability, it isn’t listed on their site, nor is it in any review I have read.

On the subject of sound, The iPhone has stereo speakers from the factory, while the S8 doesn’t. Granted you can modify the S8 to use the earpiece speaker as a louder 2nd channel, it isn’t enabled or active by factory.

Haptic Feedback is screen wide on the iPhone 6S, 7, and 8, including the keyboard in some instances. Sadly the keyboard haptic feedback isn’t used everywhere or toggable within settings. It just seems to be enabled for certain apps or situation. Would love to have it device wide, like on Android. But again, it’s not uniquely a Samsung feature, it’s built into Android.

Camera? Curious about that as the reviews I have seen showing them launching nearly equally, though IIRC DXO and other reviewers said the iPhone has a superior camera in image quality. At the end of the day, I say they are (near as makes no difference) equal here.

Waterproofing differences are real, but in most cases I don’t think people deeply test that functionality, similar to how few people will notice the iPhone’s superior processor speed over the Galaxy 8.

Maybe it’s just me, but I am convinced phones are a mature market now, with little worthy differences between them. Outside of the screen, I don’t see any massive reason to buy the Galaxy S8, in the same way I don’t see any massive reason to buy the iPhone, even with it’s superior processor. If you like Android, stick with a device you like, while the iPhone 8 is a worthy device for the iOS market.

The gauges are designed for a specific purpose that isn't affected by having dead space, while one of the most obvious purposes of the phone is legitimately affected by the existence of the notch.

It is quite obvious in full screen maps, when viewing the rear camera, blind spot camera, or front corner cameras.

But, it also doesn’t bother me, just like the “notch” on the phone, it is a non issue for some of us.

I saw a nice video comparison made by Casey Neistat of the Note 8 versus the iPhone 8 camera test, and the Note 8 was amazing. Both are great phones, but the Note 8 took some stunning video and photos. Was fairly impressed with the audio from the Note 8 in recording video as well.

yeah better that way so when the iphone 8+ scores better on those camera tests people can't complain that they're testing against the s8 that's already 6 months old

I guess it scores better in your mind and those who paid DXOmark off.

Of course it “doesn’t really need it” because it doesn’t exist. If it did have a telephoto lens you’d be raving about how much better it is than Apple’s. You’ll understand one day when you get a phone with a telephoto lens. Until then enjoy your single lens.
