As it has been with the past several iterations of iPhone and Galaxy's, it really comes down to do you like the Apple Eco system? Or can you stand Android? Hardware has reached parity, IMHO. Nothing wrong with that. I just like the Apple universe more, as long as they can keep E. Cue from gumming it all up.

That sums it up. I much prefer the Apple system but we should all cheer when we see how Samsung is making such great phones too - it means Apple will continue to have to push and push. We see in things like the Mac Mini what happens when they don't feel the heat so I am happy whenever the android phone makers put out a good phone.

In general though it makes me wonder if the smartphone market might soon hit something of a wall, at least in the west. Let's be honest, for 99% of people a 6S or SE is all they need and much the same could be said of any of the Samsung flagships from the last couple of years. In a couple of years the iphone8 with its hex core processor will be the "low price option". As phones become just another appliance we all have I wonder how this will impact on iPhones.

I really don't get how this is even possible. I don't have an 8 (waiting for the X), but I've been looking at samples and watching videos of comparisons and the differences between the images the two cameras produce are like night and day. The Note 8's camera is just woefully inaccurate. The simulated bokeh effect is laughable. The colors are so far off from real life it isn't even funny.

Like, this isn't something like processors or ram where you need to rely on measurements. Eyes can clearly see the difference between the images. When an image is taken using an $50,000 8k Red camera setup, then with an iPhone 8....and the colors all match. Then you show the same image taken with a Note 8 and the colors are super vibrant while somehow also being blurry upon zooming in, there's no question.

Side question. Optical zoom. I'm just afraid camera lenses with optical zoom will break easier. My wife drops her iPhone 7 plus a lot. The camera has failed 2 x (black screen of death). So she had to have it replaced or repaired.

I'm just not sure long term longevity with optical zoom with moving parts.

they are not moving anything to zoom, that's why there are 2 lenses. one is for 1x and one is for 2x.

the only thing moving is the optical image stabilization.

As a parent, the quality of the camera is a very important to me. Apple was beginning to really fall behind the competition in recent years. Especially in regards to indoor photos. I was seriously considering jumping ship for Android last year after the Pixel came out, mostly due to the camera. I’m glad Apple is getting back in the game.
Looking forward to the Pixel 2 reveal today.

Interesting wording on that.
Good eye. Yes, I chose the words to pass along an inclination without derailing the hardware discussion. Hardware is near parity, IMHO. Beyond that, it's what environment you choose to "live" in that is the real decision point.

Apparently, I have lying eyes. The Iphone pictures have far more detail and less blurriness than the android. the source has zero credibility in my opinion.

I fully agree, while in the first picture the girl's face looks brighter with the Note, the background (leaves and grass) is far better with the iPhone picture. The second picture does not even need any comment: day and night! Really, how can this source claim that the iPhone has more artifacts, color fringing and noise, while the girl's face is hardly visible with the x8? What a load of BS, this dude must be blind or something.

Amazing how fast Samsung can rip off iPhone features (fake bokeh). I seriously doubt it will take them 2.5 years to reverse engineer the facial recognition technology. They must have a department of theft.

iPhone is a million miles ahead of everything and everyone when it comes to photography. If you want to shoot the best quality photos on a smartphone, you'll choose iPhone everytime.
the images of my wifes iphone 7 are crazy grainy when you zoom in.

my nexus 5x makes considerably better images.

I thought apple was years ahead in this technology.

Oh, it's that laser face recognition thing that flopped during the presentation. My bad.

There is no "zoom", as in no mechanical parts moving lens elements to achieve different focal lengths. They are two fixed and independent camera lenses and sensors. Calling this zoom is highly misleading.

I've only briefly played with an iPhone 8 at the Apple store. Focusing speed is still nowhere near as quick as the Samsung. Samsung has had DSLR like focusing speed since the S7, no hunting back and forth due to its PDAF. Same goes for shutter lag which is near instant. On my iPhone 7, it gets me mad every time I miss a shot due to that severe shutter lag - press the shutter button, thinking it didn't register, press it again and a second later two (blurry) shots get taken. Went to Six Flag this past weekend and had many of those double blurry shots  Sure if I'm good and ready to leisurelyy frame the shot, I can avoid this from being an issue, but if you want to whip out the camera for a quick shot, this is a big issue.

I keep a Galaxy S8+ for a spare just for its camera. I was hoping to be able to dump it if the iPhone 8 has an equally speedy camera. It doesn't.

Is the zoom on the 8 better than on the 7 Plus. I never use it cuz the pictures always look horrible grainy like it was taken on a old nokia

Huh? The second picture I’d take the Note 8 any day of the week. The amount of noise in the model’s face on the iPhone 8 Plus is staggering.

As usual, I don’t see how they came to the conclusion they did. Their verdict and issues / positives they see in sample photos always seems nebulous.

WTF. Who is making these tests? The S8's bokeh simulation is clearly wrong and I wonder why I'm the only one seeing this? :)
Yes yes yes yes yes yes Yes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yesYes yes yes yes yes yes... I agree.

The S8 looks like a bad photoshop job.

"Hey, gimme that fuzzy background thing on my photo." - someone who cares nothing for good photos
"Okay, sure. Here you go" - lazy high school photoshopper
"YeeHAWWWWW that looks fine!" - way to excited for terrible work.

Apple probably hired professional photographers to make sure their bokeh looks legit.
S8: obviously, not so much.

That pretty much goes for anyone who doesn't blindly gush over Apple and rave about how an Apple product is years ahead of its competition.
I just buy the phone I like and enjoy it.
The Iphone 8+ is a great phone.
ITs good to have competition, thats what made the 8+ a better phone :)
Is it the best? Its the best one for me, thats all I care about..
and that Apple sells enough phones to keep updating it :)

Department of theft? There's a number of features that non-Apple devices have had before Apple introduced them into their devices. I don't think it's fair to say Samsung are copying Apple, when Apple are equally copying the competition. The truth is, everyone is copying everyone in order to compete. The real difference lies in the implementation of these features and true innovation and originality.

If its wrong, the Note 8 at least lets you adjust the bokeh effect.....remember (unheard of on a iphone).

Meh. For the average consumer, we reached a good enough camera in the 6. Anything since then isn’t really going to make much difference to the duck face selfies and dog pictures that are put on Instagram. If you are a pro, you probably going to invest in digital DLR setup.
Don't knock it until you try it!
Coming from the 6 to the 8+ is quite a difference, for the camera and other features.
Yeah pros mostly will use pro equipment but
many "PRO" pics will be coming out from the new phones.

The Samsung pictures have excessive saturation.

If Samsung wanted excessive saturation there is always HDR Rich mode (the mode that looks just like the iphone 8 plus pics imo) but I don't see any excessive saturation in those Note 8 pics.
