Meh, let em.

It's a good idea, both for usability and for security. I hope more expensive device manufacturers follow suit.

I haven't bothered to upgrade to 5s for fingerprint scanning, I don't even lock my phone unless I'm going out drinking.

Way I see it anyone competing with Apple on technology that requires a fusion of hardware & software is going to struggle.

How can Samsung truly make innovative hardware advances whilst being tied into Android software.

I believe that is why Apple is concentrating on all of their annual USP's to be relying on Hardware & Software combinations - they can't be beaten.

Also looking forward to retina.

i think apple has them beat in touch id. it is already pretty good, if they manage to make it any better with an update i can only imagine how good it will be.

TouchID is beneficial for people just like you. You get at least some added security without even thinking about it.
Plus, purchasing apps and songs with touch ID is really convenient.

Not that this is reason enough to upgrade.... but FYI.

There is an interesting explanation of the controversies in the wikipedia article.

Yep, and I agree with the article. The HTC One has ~469 ppi (same screen tech as the iPhone 4/4s/5/5s). Those iPhones have ~326 ppi. The difference is obvious. At normal viewing distance, as that article suggests, the difference between the two is so obvious. Now if only the HTC One ran iOS. :)

You guys do know that apple wasn't the first with the fingerprint sensor on a cell phone

They copied from someone else as well.

Now apologize

They were the first to make it work reliably, easily, every time. That's the difference.

This is the most unsurprising mac rumour ever.

Samsung don't even know why they would want to put a fingerprint scanner in a phone. You can tell by all the gimmicks they are just doing a ME TOO phone for those who want to compare.

You can't really compare an apple product designed to be a use product with samsungs copycat approach.

Really.

Wonder where they got that idea from?
Doesn't matter.

Apple may have been the first to successfully push the fingerprint sensor in mobile phones, but they weren't the first to do so.

So what would Samsung really be copying from Apple. Them executing the fingerprint sensor successfully? Would they be copying that?

Can you really copy that?

Touch ID's patents are not simply about "a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button", that would be an abstract idea which is not patentable at all. Patents are about a specific way to implement something, and Samsung's implementation is described as being completely different from Touch ID.

About the naming, I don't think Apple or Samsung have a trademark on "5S" or "S5". I think the trademarks are on "Galaxy S" and "iPhone".

I think common sense has utterly failed you, if you can't hear the sound of the giant copy machine at work.

It looks cool and is different, but explain exactly how useful it would be? Or better than what we have today. Notice I said better, not different.

It's for those moments when you pull your smartphone out of your pocket and don't want to look right at the front but kind of tilt it into an angle so you can read notifications or such on a narrow angled strip instead of being forced to look at the front of your phone (by tilting it back to a regular angle)...

Oh wait, you said "better"... I'm out

I wonder wheres the IRIS scanner???

Probably waiting for Apple to do it right.

At keast..

..it will be interesting to see if you can swipe your nose to unlock it. Now, that would make news (and funny videos)!

Most interesting thing to me is the claim that they are going to hit a cheaper price point. With all that high end gear (sharper screen, etc.) it will be hard to maintain profit margins on a lower price point.

The phone will be subsidized by people being able to access financial records on the phone with the new fingerswipe technology. Samsung gets a % of that pilfered money.

Now people are going to brag about how their ThinkPads or horrible HP laptops had this already. You know what, if you use an HP laptop, you're asking for pity.

I'll bet Samsung's phone will have it work exactly the same way the iPhone does. But the iPhone doesn't have it work the same way older phones do.

Let me get this straight...

Apple released the 5S with home button + fingerprint sensor.

Samsung will now release the S5 with home button + fingerprint sensor.

I just realized that the Samsung phones have reversed iPhone names. 4S vs S4, 5S vs S5… If it was any other company, I'd consider it a coincidence, but Samsung has quite a bad reputation.

Can you name a phone with fingerprint scanner home button?

Payback for Android

Finally! Android users always hate on iOS and Apple in general for copying everyone else. NOW WE HAVE THE POWER

Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, S5? Copying? Really?

Well that would depend on how the software utilises it. I just think it looks cool. But I guess it could scroll information or be permanently visible no matter what the rest of the screen is doing, like you could have a full screen game going but at the top would be the signal strength, alerts, battery life, clock etc.
