Bottom feeders who provide jobs in the US unlike Apple who races to China for production.

First of all, how do you know what effect this will have on the job market in Texas? They are spending the money to "revamp" the facility. do you even know that this is not to streamline/automate and possibly cut jobs in the future? Article also says that Samsung had opened a facility earlier dedicated to Apples A5 chip (according to Reuters). AND that Apple themselves were expanding their operations in Austin to create an additional 3,600 jobs. This plus the 1,000 or so jobs added at the Samsung facility dedicated to Apple's chip... how many US Jobs were created because of Apple?

Kudo's to Samsung for being the class act they are.

This speaks volumes about their wisdom, strength & fearless confidence.

They may lose the legal skirmish Apple has launched due to Apples power and influence, yet Samsung carries on unfazed by Apples bully tactics.

Too bad Apple feels so needlessly insecure they are still demanding a ban on the sale of Samsung products.

One moment Apple thinks big, creating great things, the next moment they lapse into paranoia and fear of competing fairly in the market place.

Apple is acting so conflicted, they're coming across as an adolescent kid.

This is one very interesting chapter in the evolution of tech circa 2012.

Samsung is copying Apple AGAIN!!!!

Wow. You are on the wrong side of every thought. Why do you enjoy being wrong? Do some real research and you'll stop spewing anti-Apple comments. Seems like you're paid off by Samsung - nobody can seriously feel this way normally.

Kudos for Texas for continuing to attract companies to expand, build new facilities, and promote growth. It's amazing what a business-friendly climate will do for a state.
And lack of earthquakes. :)

I know you're a big fan of Apple. But not everything comes back to Apple. It's ok - you can admit that Samsung is doing a good thing here by not only updating their facilities - but by creating hundreds of jobs in the process and pouring money into the American economy.

Further - the jobs are being created because of us - the customers. Customers determine the marketplace.

So if a Korean company thinks it's a good investment to continue with plants in the USA, why doesn't a American company do the same?

This says more about Apple than it does Samsung.

Apple has no confidence in the American manufacturing sector?

Manufacture of nanometer VLSI ICs is a very expensive business. The tools required to process wafers cost millions and millions and those m(b)illions must be respent every couple of years to get the tools for the next process shrink. It also takes a set of very qualified people to run. That's expertise many overseas companies just don't have.

The reason for Texas specifically is its tax incentives it is known for. Same reason Intel has a plant in Ireland.

If you think Samsung would open up that fab in the US if Apple did not enter into a long term minimum purchase agreement, you are fooling yourself.

This thread has some of the dumbest posts I've ever read here.

Hmmm. $4B and only 2500 installers. To install that much equipment they would have had to contract for the equipment 2-3 years ago.

Apple and Samsung have long term supply agreements and Apple is fronting huge capital to this supplier just like it does for all suppliers.

The lawsuit in CA while significant and a real problem for ethics among "associates", and even potentially a large sum of money, is on a different track. Lane 3 while chips are in Lane 1 and memory in Lane 2.

I just hope there isn't a high speed wreck on the autobaun, because the reprocussions could be large for the industry and cor consumers from both companies.

I has to be pretty hard for Apple to get over not the mere look and feel copies, but the outright clones of Apple products Samsung manufactures in countries that does not protect IP at all.

What is up with this victim mentality? Don't believe in this "everything is going to hell" narrative prevalent in the news cycle due to the elections. Intel has plenty of fabs in the US, so does IBM, as well as Global Foundries, formerly known as AMD fabs.

Does it matter who I'm a "fan" of? I'm not saying anything bad about Samsung. This is great that they are investing money in this country. I personally believe that ALL of those companies that become extraordinarily successful because of us American consumers SHOULD be investing more in the US, INCLUDING Apple. And I never said that it “all” comes back to Apple, just informing some of those posters who insinuate that Apple has done very little to create jobs or bring money into this country.

Read my posts, I haven’t bashed Samsung for this move. If this does end up creating more jobs, then good for Samsung. I applaud them for the move, but c’mon… to assume that Apple does nothing for the American worker by some of the posters here is a bit ignorant.

IBM and Intel do build fabs in the U.S. And Apple likely fronted Samsung a very large chunk of change to build that fab in Texas as well.

Mainland China semiconductor fabs, such a SMIC, just haven't been able to catch up with the latest process technology and quality levels required to make these new chips.

Apple should stop Samsung giving money !

So you no longer want to see iOS devices on the shelves? Ok...fine.

Seriously, some people really are completely brain dead here aren't they. Samsung is one of Apple's many suppliers. Without these suppliers, Apple has no products. Its not just a simple case of 'stop paying them and do it yourself'.

Not being fooled by myself or anyone. They also wouldn't be renovating that plant if they didn't make such good parts that Apple needed them to. It's a symbiotic relationship. Both companies - but more importantly - consumers are driving the necessity for the plant.

I agree

Are you claiming that Samsung is making that clone?

It sure sounds like it. If you bothered to look at what else you can buy on that website you'd see clones of various Samsung phones too.

Yup, samsung is going to make a clone/knock off of their own product.

Speaking of 28mn production, I wonder how much of that is going toward Qualcomm as they announced a recent deal with Samsung. It's been said TSMC's capacity has been packed to its limit and giving Qualcomm some extra breathing room is a good thing for everyone. (when is Samsung and nVidia's new modem chips coming out anyway?)

Kudo's to Samsung for being the class act they are.

Samsung is an excellent maker of goods but it is very opposite of "class". The only reason Samsung gets love is that people are pitting them against the current evil empire(Apple) and they aren't a USA corporation so most aren't aware of their wrong doings. If Samsung was a USA company, they'll be one of most hated names. I mean, can you imagine the backlashes if Steve Jobs was found guilty of a massive tax evasion and Apple was found to do all sorts of dirty stuff?

I doubt it anyone really has confidence to build computers and phones in large scale in the USA. Microsoft doesn't make their mice here nor does Google build their Nexus phones or tablets here. Making chips is a very different business from the regular manufacturing sector.
