Man, I just can't wait to buy two or three of these things to expand the storage of my Mac Studio and make it look like a balding Medusa.

I have two Samsung T7 1 TB drives for ad hoc backups, copies and such, and am trying to understand why they need rubbers, (with ribs no less).
Apparently, people don't store the drive in their bags. They carry them in their hands during commute for some odd reason.

It is just another Pickup Truck marketing.

Might buy this just for my M1 MacBook Pro. Not connecting my current external hard disk to it. The M1 corrupted and damaged my last external drive with all my data on it.

Yikes, I also heard that M1's have poor Thunderbolt speeds.

Samsung today announced the launch of the T7 Shield, the newest addition to its T7 portable SSD lineup. The T7 Shield is designed to be Samsung's most damage-proof SSD, with improved durability for use both indoors and outdoors.

The T7 Shield features an IP65 water resistant aluminum casing that is able to hold up to rain and dust, plus it offers crush resistance and protection from drops up to 9.8 feet high.

A rubberized exterior encases the aluminum to keep the SSD safe, and because it is the size of a business card, it is ideal for use when traveling. It comes in black, beige, and blue.

The T7 Shield features read speeds of up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000MB/s, which Samsung says is more than 1.9x faster than SATA-based portable SSDs.

According to Samsung, the T7 Shield is compatible with PCs, laptops, mobile devices, game consoles, and more. It is priced at $160 for 1TB and $290 for 2TB, and it is available from Samsung's website.

The Sandisks are pretty great, especially for the $. Not sure what the reasoning is behind SSD companies still selling slow, low capacity SSD's as premium products.

This seems like a case of Samsung just trying to revive the T7 lineup with a refreshed design, even when its not really needed.

Actually, been waiting for an upgrade to the T7 as I need a new external ssd. But was expecting something like a T9 utilizing usb 3.2 gen 2 specs with 2000mb/s not just a rugged design. Maybe Samsung is finalizing the usb 4 version of the T-series with even faster datatransfer speeds, which also could be a nice and much better upgrade.

Not worth engaging with this. Apple internal drive at 7x the speed with cooling, etc. — these facts are lost on those that don’t understand the benefits of internal vs external — they just look at price.

Sometimes you don’t need ultra speed, just size. I keep my (modest) movie and mp3 lecture collection on a T7, and it all streams fine over USB-C. Picked up a 2TB T7 on sale for 160 euro’s, the discounts on Samsung gear can get pretty substantial.

Internal ssd is always going to be faster. Yet, it does not have that dramatic real world usage difference.

Don’t make excuses for it; Apple charges too much for SSD upgrade. That is just a fact.
While apple’s pricing is outrageous the speed absolutely have a real world usage difference. If you have actually tried to use it for things that need frequent read and write the slowdown is noticeable.

They dont use them anymore so i can see how it matters.

Why wouldnt they when people buy them instead of buying external storage? And yes it does make a difference, just becouse you use your machine for emails doesnt mean everyone does
This Samsung’s SSD is for general use. If you are a professional looking for pro-grade storage, you shouldn’t even be using external SSD; you need to buy Thunderbolt-enabled storage. Even that is cheaper than Apple’s storage options.

There is just no way to cut it; Apple charges too much for storage. It is just a fact. Stop being an apologist.

External SSD is always going to be slower than internal one due to throughput, better cooling and latency. If you care so much about speed, go ahead and buy internal one. Lots of people just want extra storage with good speed. Why are people bashing Samsung for releasing cheaper external SSD at lower speed? It is undeniable that Apple charges too much for internal storage.

Unfortunately price is a big factor and why people would rather compromise and get and tape their SSDs onto the back of their MacBooks instead of getting the internal upgrade.

Not buying this. I own a Samsung T5, and after numerous back-and-forth sessions with Samsung support, OS reinstalls and disk formatting, the T5 still has yet to be even recognized when plugged into my M1 MacBook Air.

There's something screwy about Samsung's firmware with this SSD series, and I'm not hopeful that they've magically solved it with this new iteration of their SSD products.

Sold my T7 a while ago and replaced it with a Glyph Atom Pro 2TB instead. The TB interface makes it almost feel like I'm using the internal drive.....

Ugh, how are a measly 2 TB the largest size on offer in 2022? We had SSDs of this size with this performance ten years ago.

4 TB is the minimum I need, 8 TB would be desirable.
