Currently the 3.5mm jack uses the DAC built into the iphone. With the lightning port a digital signal is sent direct the the DAC built into the headphone. This will allow a higher quality signal sent direct to a higher quality DAC.

I have one thing to say to that ... point of diminishing returns. It does not mean a hill of beans because any alleged improvement in signal transmission will be unnoticeable to the user, even if you are Jay Z.

Or a lower quality DAC.

Look, this already happens with the current iPhones , I use the camera USB cable to plug in a 3rd party DAC , I use the chord mojo, the iPhone 7 will not improve the sound quality at all.

Thing is the DAC inside the iPhone is very good, chance you will get a worse one in most headphones , unless you spend big....adding bulk to headphones is not the answer

Apple screwed up.

This should have been there implementation plan:

1) Iphone 7 & 7s with 3.5MM but with ear buds that charge with lightening, but are bluetooth

World moves away from 3.5MM for bluetooth

2) Iphone 8, remove 3.5MM

You get that by me stating a fact? I don't care either way about the headphone port. I don't use it anyway. But the point is, if Apple does it, Samsung will copy it.

Why would they ? Samaung has a MFI program? Apple is doing it to profit , why would Samsung do it ?

These days, it seems Samsung appears be innovating more than Apple in the mobile phone market.

More innovative doesn't mean better such as the hands free touch gimmick.

And implementing usb-c which apple pushed forward... My point is that Samsung shoots darts in the blank and see what's sticks.

Removable media? Most people use the cloud to store their files.

If the Rumor of the 3.5mm jack is true, and there is an adapter, then what's the issue? It's the whole power connector from the wide version to lightning version. We all survived that apocalypse and got thinner phones. The quality of headphones will be better.

Aren't they removing it for space and you get better audio quality with the lightning connection?

I know it's not a popular move, but those are the reasons right?

Audio quality isn't necessarily better as the quality is now completely the responsibility of the headphone maker rather than Apple. At least now you can guarantee the DAC is somewhat decent because Apple is the designer.

Well here are a few issues:

No way to power the phone via lighting port and have headphone/earbuds plugged in at the same time.

Yet another adapter to carry around.

Removal of a standard that is ubiquitous across laptops, desktops, automobiles, music players, stereos, even the in-seat audio jacks on certain Boeing and Airbus airlines.

Uh, no.

TheFappening, anyone? Cloud storage is a sorry excuse to replace physical storage. Not everyone is online and if they are, there is still issues with hacker and a data limit. It really shouldn't be hard if Apple actually added a micro-sd slot or even something basic like FM radio they added on the iPod nanos. But that's why Apple has so many lovers and haters. Stubborn like a mule. They make money ripping alot of people off with their ecosystem, polish, or whatever mantra Apple fanatics love to say over and over.

Physical storage is always better while iCloud is for people to spend more money when online isn't always accessible for everyone.

You don't get better audio quality with the lightning connection. For almost 100 years the best headphones in the world, thousands of dollars of equipment, have been using it. And the lightning port is present since the iPhone 5, along with the headphone jack. What do we get now
that we didn't with the iPhone 5?

Here's what will happen if Apple remove the mini jack:
A handful of vocal objectors will moan here and on other similar sites that they can no longer use their wired headphones without an adapter. Most of these will just get an adapter, a few will buy another phone that suits their needs. The vast majority of iphone users will continue doing what they've always done and use whatever Apple bundles with the phone.

Who sells twice as many phones as Samsung? Not Apple. Thats for sure.

No one sells as many phones as Samsung and thats a fact my friend :)

While that may be true, I think Apple sells more iPhones if compared to galaxy phones only.

Another zealot who blindly follows a company. Seriously, Android is a great operating system. So is iOS in its own way. It has a lot of features that only now Apple is adopting. Just look at iOS 10. Basically mimicking things Android has had for years. Why can't people appreciate both of them?

You do realize Apple's existence didn't start with the iPhone right? Maybe, just maybe, Apple is 'mimicking' their own desktop 'features' that have been around for years (even before there was a Google). Ya think?

There isn't really anything earth shattering going on in the smartphone world these days.

Have to talk about something I guess ?

Aint that the truth. I find myself less and less excited about new smartphones. It makes sense, though. In the early iPhone era, everything that came out seemed so refreshing, because the whole smartphone "thing" was so new. Now, it's like in the early 2000's when computers have become iterative in their advancement. We're at a stage in which any new smartphone can pretty much handle 90% of all tasks and apps well enough.

It may seem funny at the time, and even the audience may get it and laugh; but I think that was a bad judgement call in poor taste.

My reasons are this. Samsung is also a manufacturing partner of Apple. They have to sign NDA so they do not release manufacturing specifications to the public before anything is announced publicly by their partner. This joke, even though it may be innocent, could lead to giving the impression that they knew about the designs, and leaked it in the joke. It could have been just a mere coincidence! But the matter is Samsung is a manufacturing partner as well as a competitor. They should not have joked like that lest people get the impression they are trying to outsmart their NDA and find a loop hole to release hints at Apple future phones where nothing has been confirmed (all rumors).

While the audience was laughing, I think their legal department cringed. I would...

The presentation definitely lacked excitement in my opinion - but it really doesn't matter - most consumers don't watch these things.

The other joke that was made was about how Samsung includes things like the S-Pen instead of charging lots of money for accessories like "others do"
That $99 accessory is worth every penny.... at least for me

Erroneous apostrophes asside, you are correct. This is nothing more than Apple trying to squeeze out a little more margin on the phone and require users to buy additional accessories. They need to make some money make on their Beats acquisition after-all...

Really? You think Apple would jeopardize their most profitable product during a sales slowdown, busy removing a universal standard for no reason, when their competition doesn't also need to remove it, because they think they can gouge their customers out of a few extra dollars to for adapters? You think Apple will make up the defecting iPhone customers sales losses with Lightning licenses, and Beats headphones?

Well here are a few issues:

No way to power the phone via lighting port and have headphone/earbuds plugged in at the same time.

Yet another adapter to carry around.

Removal of a standard that is ubiquitous across laptops, desktops, automobiles, music players, stereos, even the in-seat audio jacks on certain Boeing and Airbus airlines.

I'd like to see your proof that there's no way to power the phone while the headphones are plugged in.

And why would you need an adapter if you own Lightning headphones?

Unless a customer owns all those devices, they won't need such a standard. And what's a person to do if they don't end up on one of those "certain" Boeing or Airbus planes?

Apple knows exactly what they're doing.

- iPhone 7: no 3.5mm jack. Other smartphone manufacturers follow suit by releasing smartphones with no 3.5mm jack in 2017.

- iPhone 8 (10 year anniversary edition): Apple puts back 3.5mm jack. Phil Schiller tells crowd at Sept 2017 launch

It's only a matter of time before Samsung removes their headphone jacks in favor of Bluetooth. Cords are going to seem dated in a few short years.

For anyone that wants a direct connection for quality/battery reasons, there will always be lightning/micro USB adapters.
USB I agree with. Lightning is a crap idea.

Samsung is so pathetic they even make fun of rumors.

Want to know the difference between Apple and Samsung?

- If Samsung removed the headphone jack their users would be stuck using whatever headphones came with their phone, because nobody will make compatible headphones. Just like Samsung STILL can't convince developers to code for their devices instead of just for Android.
- If Apple removes the headphone jack, an entire industry will spring up to support it and you'll see numerous headphones from a wide range of manufacturers. In fact, we've ALREADY got Lightning headphones even before the iPhone 7 comes out.

This is the kind of pull Apple has (and Samsung wished they had).

Samsung doesn't need that kind of pull. Because they use standard usb-c so all usb-c headphones will work. Probably be a lot cheaper than lightning headphones.

My "friend" Samesong is KING of BOGO's and FREE FREE FREE phones and those FIRE SALES move huge bits of product. That my friend is a fact. Thankfully Apple doesn't compete.

Btw I'm not the type of consumer that buys a product based on quantified sales versus qualified. Get the difference?

In the end what difference does it make in the scheme of things since Apple crushes on
P R O F I T as it takes TWO SAMESONG SALES to equal the P R O F I T of ONE iPhone.

Ouch

Had Apple actually improved sound qualify , boom, awesome, they are not , BT audio is inferior, and enjoy the MFI tax on your headphones ....
Or you could wait until they actually announce and release something before getting all upset about it.

Back again it's the Robeast digger! Been away for awhile, but now I'm back to make hopefully insightful comments. But I'll make a lot of dumb and sheeple comments. Let's begin.

Apple gets rid of headphone jack. It waterproofs the iPhone7, like the Samsung. It some other mess, like the Samsung. Wireless charging, like the Samsung. Then it throws down some ultra speakers and new Beats Bluetooth Headphones. Not like Samsung. It throws in the dongle for those times you're charging your headphones. Wait, Wait. The same wireless charging station that now charges your iPhone can also charge your Beats headphones or airpods. Not like Samsung! Phil Schiller at the iPhone Keynote "Innovate that B*tches! Dre to the whip! P Schill..out!" And drops the mic.

If somebody already mentioned it, cool. I like the way you are thinking. If not and Apple didn't try to patent it, I'm patent b*tch all over it. I want $50 mill and a percentage! And I won't take it to West Texas. I'm not bribing any potential jurors, but I'm willing to get current members a rose gold star sticker after Apple starts paying. ;) JK. Two star stickers. I'm not greedy.
