To be fair, those are two very valid complaints about the iPhone X. Let's hope at least the fast charger is included in this years iPhone.

Yea they have a point but the fact that I would have to buy a Samsung product? That’s funny I won’t ever buy that crap. I’ll deal with the few limitations that Apple likes to put on us before I buy a samsung product.

suggesting you can 'bully' Apple is ridiculous.... Apple is the leader in the market...

No i don't think it's bizarre at all... the iPhone is a crazy class of product in itself. Whenever a new iPhone comes out EVERYBODY knows. and EVERYBODY would be interested in why that new iPhone is the best - what new features does it have? EVERYBODY would want to know the answer to that question, not just lurkers of MacRumors... that is incredible, no other consumer product enjoys that luxury of leading brand perception.

A new Samsung? Ask any normal person out of these forums and you'd be hard pressed to find what's different between the S9 and last year's S8... iPhone? My mum can tell you that this year's iphone has face unlock and you can use Apple Pay with your face.

By that measure, market interest and perception, yes, Samsung is clearly the underdog.

To be relatable to your analogy, Burger King has 15% of the US burger market share...that is no freaking slouch... 15% of marketshare in the burger loving USA... but compared to McDonalds, they clearly are the underdog....

I understand what you're saying but market share has never been measured in terms of interest, perception, profits or slim wedges of bigger markets. It's always been unit sales because that's the only quantifiable measure you can use to compare different companies who may have radically different business cultures and marketing. Apple has always been very good at getting everyone's attention. There's no reason Samsung couldn't have cultivated the same image but they chose not to. So trying to determine underdog status based on that seems specious to me and a possible sign of bias.

Regardless of whether you agree with what I'm saying, an underdog is someone struggling to survive in a given market, and Samsung does not fit that criteria by any stretch. FWIW, Apple despite selling fewer phones is also not an underdog. I wouldn't care to see ads like this from them slamming Samsung.

These adverts are embarrassing. Why doesn't Samsung focus on showcasing their products instead of bashing the competition? Are they trying to be Microsoft or something?!

This is a sign of insecurity. It's like the kid at school who mocks others because in reality he/she is just jealous. Apple did this with MS Windows and PCs in general as it was trying to get people to switch to Mac. Apple, nowadays is confident and I don't recall (I could be wrong here) any recent commercials that mocked the competition. They usually just highlight the positives of their products.

Phone advertisements are so silly. These devices all do the same junk and have basically the same tech tier for tier. Buy what you can afford that suits your needs people!

Mac/PC ads.

You may want to note that those ads actually backfired on Apple. They were great at getting attention but Apple didn't see a significant increase in Mac sales until the iPhone came along.

Firstly, it was long ago. iPhone didn't exist yet which is a lifetime in the tech industry.

Secondly, those Apple ads always poked fun at Microsoft and Windows, not the PC customers. Every Samsung ad I see feels divisive and target Apple customers more than Apple or the product itself. They always feel more like a personal attack in tone than a fun observation or product comparison. But both ad campaigns reflect the underdog approach so I suppose they must also share similarities.

Uhm ... you may want to rethink what you're posting.

When you say "iPhone didn't exist yet which is a lifetime in the tech industry.", are you referring to an alternate dimension where the iPhone wasn't released in 2007 and the "I'm A PC/Mac" ads didn't run from 2006 through 2009?

I think you're arguing semantics on the definition of the word 'underdog' and your arbitrary guideline that only companies that fit your definition of 'underdog' can run these ads.

Those rules don't exist in real life. Only, who's 1st? who's 2nd? And what can the guy coming 2nd do to compete with the guy coming 1st?

If Samsung could have cultivated that image that Apple has, they would have. Just as Apple would have loved getting the image of being the 'default' computer back in 2006. But it's easier said than done. Hence ads like mac vs PC, and these.

LOL. Remember when they made fun of Apple for not having a removable battery, only to not have a removable battery themselves the following year?
Just like the iPhone 5 was the prefect size and having a small tablet was an abomination. Oh and don’t forger that nobody wants a stylus. They all backtrack on what they say. Samsung will loose the headphone jack. Maybe next year when they make a truly bezeless phone. Perhaps they will even get up on stage and say hey we got rid of the jack so we could make a bezeless phone. Instead of saying nonsense like courage.

I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC...
Wasn’t that long ago.

People always compared these to the Mac vs PC ads. They are not the same, even though on the face of it they are both comparison videos. One compares two products and the other compares customers. This is along the lines of those terrible "basically" Mac genius ads Apple made back in 2012. These kinds of ads insults the customer base of the other company and implies that people are stupid and buys into a products simply because they are uninformed sheep. Some people like both brands, and they are more likely to switch around every few years, but these ads will just alienate those customers.

Just remember that the “nobody wants a stylus” comment was in relation to a phone....

Samsung and/or their customers mocked the iPhone for not having wireless charging, but then when it does have it, they moan that you can't listen to your iPhone and charge it at the same time, when you clearly can by using a wireless charger which costs about £6.

I've had my iPhone X since launch day on Friday November 3rd 2017, and I have *never* needed to plug both the headphones and the Lightning cable in at the same time. YMMV, but my mileage is fine, thanks.

I also don't get this dongle nonsense. You might own a pair of headphones that you want to use with your iPhone, great, so put the adapter on your 'phones AND LEAVE IT THERE. It adds about 8cm to the length of the cord from your 'phones. And it was free. What's the beef?

I would think everyone at Apple is totally okay with that. The majority of Samsung phones sold are cheap. This isn't a market Apple wants to play in and will happily allow all of the other Android manufacturers to battle each other for the bottom end.

Apple still sells the iPhone SE, a 2 year old phone that cost $400 2 years ago. Phones usually get a $100 discount each year at retail, so Apple is basically selling a $200 iPhone with $150 Apple tax.

these are HILARIOUS!!!- - - - -- -and VERY TRUE - apple choose industrial design over maximizing tech.. and now its a backlash waiting to happen...

I fail to see how the adverts in this article insult the customer. In these adverts the customer was knowledgable and knew what they wanted. They were not able to be fobbed off by the Genius. I as an Apple customer was not offended in anyway. I found them funny and entertaining.

Now the ones that I might have cause to take offence with are the ones where they depict the customer as a sheep lining up for an inferior device on launch day. I didn’t find them offensive but yes as someone who could possibly line up on launch day for an iPhone the yes there was a cause to be offended although I wasn’t.

Samsung really dropped the ball with these advertisements. I agree 100% with what they are saying but the way they are saying it seems ... boring ... and childish.

I never understood the lack of headphone jack issue. My “dongle” is attached to my cable for my Senheisser cans. It stays there. I only need it for when I’m on a plane and Bluetooth isn’t allowed. Can’t see the problem with that. Not even on a 20 hour flight to Australia I needed to charge. To me this is purely a theoretical issue in my opinion.

The charger as well. Battery life is good, charging is fast enough. USB ports are everywhere, why carry the whole charger with you. It’s again a highly theoretical issue if you want to make it one.

Camera, so both are excellent. The difference is so small that it isn’t measurable outside lab conditions. Ultimately it then comes down to personal preference.

Samsung are rather desperate if they resort to this kind of negative advertising. It was obvious though as since launch the phone was discounted and they even invited trade in from an iPhone 4.

Ultimately they are both good phones, and it comes down to whether you prefer Android in Samsung’s flavour or iOS.

1. The adapter is a huge pita. I have 2 adapter, one for my headphones, one for my car. And I've already had one fail at 6 months of age. I use my headphones with my iPhone, with my work computer, and with my MBP. So the headphone adapter can't stay attached. Also, please try to learn the definition of dongle. It doesn't mean what you think it means.

2. Wireless headphones are garbage. Aside from the nuisance of having another device to keep charged (and my cheap wireless headphones are never charged when I want to use them), they come with non-replacable batteries. I had no issue dropping around $500 on a pair of good headphones. But when that $500 is on a product I expect to be in the trash in 3 years for no reason other than a dead battery...the product is garbage by design. Add to that bluetooth still doesn't have the same quality as the 3.5mm connection.

3. You don't have to agree with either of those points. Having the 3.5mm plug causes zero issues. Samsung has proven that very well. You can argue against my 1. and 2. until you're blue in the face, and Apple is still a bunch of courageous idiots for getting rid of the jack. The only reason they did it is to make money off overpriced wireless headphones you can replace every 3 years and replacing lost adaptors.

4. As for the camera. They're both very close to each other and both low-quality trash next to a 10 year old DSLR that you can pick up for $50 on ebay. So it's a stupid argument. It's like 2 kindergarten kids arguing about who is stronger next to an olympic weightlifter.

To all defending Samsung and ripping Apple for the Mac/PC ads, nobody is debating that, however, Samsung is the one sued for patent infringement of the iPhone design and have made slanders against Apple since the get go. Look at all of the phones that now emulate the full screen notch. I am happy to point out Apple’s shortfalls, which are numerous on the Mac side and some of their design decisions, but it just feels really cheap of Samsung to constantly swipe at Apple. It’s as though they know the iPhone X is a league up from the Galaxy/Note.

IMO, in general (not regarding the silly Samsung vs Apple feud,) ads that mock the competition are both childish and make the target a credible competitor, as it makes it obvious that the company responsible for the ad is concerned enough about their competitor that they are willing to spend capital on it.

I’m not personally bothered about the headphone jack. I have 2 adapters. One is in my drawer and the other is still in the iPhone X box. Never used them but I understand that others are upset about it and I’ve heard of people saying they lost their dongle or forgot to bring it out with them and then they can’t use their wired headphones.

As for charging whilst using headphones. The times when I’ve wanted to do this is in bed at night. I have airpods but I worry about falling asleep with them in and them falling out in the bed, sleeping on them/ them getting lost etc

Also I have a toddler who tries his luck about getting into mummy and daddies bed. I wouldn’t want a stray airpod finding it’s way into his mouth.

So yes as night sometimes I’d like to be able to charge my phone and use the wired lighting headphones at the same time.
