A parts supplier is willing to sell parts.

Whoopee!

MacRumors is really scraping the bottom of the barrel these days.

Does anybody actually want this?
Yes, I would be more than happy to have a 13inch laptop that folds into a small book or a full size iPad Pro that is portable as iPhone Max. Many many people already use their iPhones as principal computing device. Giving them a larger display is beyond convenint, it is a complete revolution. A properly made foldable display + 5nm CPU can bring an iPad Pro preformance and display size in your back pocket, literally. Im optimistic that foldable displays are the future and any manufacturer with some vision in mind needs to strongly consider how to master this technology. It has flows, it is expensive, it is poorly implemented in the devices we have already seen, I agree. But its potential is huge. I think it will be a bigger revolution than the multitouch display we first saw in the original iPhone.

Only the most die-hard fanboys refuse to believe it LOL. This is going to eventually kill off the iPad. Believe it!

iPads have 10" to 13" displays. These phones unfold to ~7" displays. It may kill off the mini tablet, but not the full sized ones.

I was initially pretty dismissive of folding phones, as the current plastic screens are not fit for purpose, but after seeing the work done on folding 'glass', I think this could be practical in a few years time.

The springiness of flexible glass is the key to getting a flat surface when in tablet mode.

Yes, that's the limit of the panels currently on offer from Samsung - - but before the end of the 2020's Apple will surely design a single panel with three hinges which folds down into four segments for a pocketable full sized 12.9" iPad Pro.

Mark my words - - it will be available within a decade, it will be awesome, and I will be pre-ordering the first generation model at 3am on the first day.

Why should Apple compete in this stupid segment?

I agree. What people are forgetting here is Apple has spent the last 12 Years moving away from anything that can cause wear and tear, Customer returns or Customer dissatisfaction.

Removable Batteries - Gone ( controversial at the time but now everyone does it )
Actually, Apple has not had swappable batteries in devices since iPod 1 in 2001.

Movable controls
Mechanical Clickwheel and buttons gave way to the touch wheel
Mechanical Home button/TouchID become a solid state touchID with the haptic feedback.

Other wear and Tear items
Headphone jack to Bluetooth.
Old 30 Pin connector to Lightning
Lighting to Qi Charging
Waterproofing.

Actually, the haptic feedback is the only place I have seen that they have added a moving/wear component.

Foldable screens as they stand will have a lot of stress on them the slide and crease. This is a massive failure point and I am sure we'll hear LOADS about failed screens in the next year.

I am struggling to think of a good use case for having a double size square screen.

Video would have zero benefit - The width is the width and you'd just have huge black bars.

Office apps would be better - but you are still typing on a touch screen - so does anyone really do that sort of work without a keyboard.

Artistic work would but do these support pens?

The Benefits seem negligible to say the least given the price - you could buy a phone and a tablet for the quoted prices and you have TWO devices.

The other thing is in the next few years Apple will be shifting to AR like the magic leap. It's almost Guaranteed. All the tech points towards it. AR kit in the iPhone XS is amazing and rock solid and is even more stable than Magic leap or Hololens (v1)

Issues are Display technology needs to be smaller and can they make it sexy enough - Magic leap is NOT sexy. These things would need to look like RayBans / Oakleys before anyone would go near them - but the Watch proves they can do wearables.

I really, really hope Apple doesn't get involved in this dumb fad; foldable displays are an idiotic idea, it's just one more thing of dubious usefulness that's just begging to fail.

What I want from a display is good quality, with low power consumption; that's it. I don't want curved edges, or the ability to fold it, I want it to just work well, and not drain my battery too much while doing it.

There's no folding variation that you can make that would give you a) something that you can hold in your hand and b) unfolds into a 13" display.

Some maths:

iPad Pro 12.9
305 H
220 W

iPhone XS Max
157 H
77 W

To have a phone that unfolds into a 13" 4:3 tablet it would have to be

220 H
101 W

which just isn't viable as a phone. This is more like an unfolding iPad Mini.

It is stupid until Apple does it. Then it will be "magical". Right?

This is the same disgusting hypocrisy I remember regarding wireless charging. Oh how many here cried it was a stupid feature on competing phones. Suddenly after 8/X it wasn't stupid anymore. Pathetic.

Samsung made a commercial in 2013 showing a dude impressing a potential date with a foldable phone over a rival with an ordinary Apple iPad. Must work in Korea because production is finally ramping.

Wrong Wrong.

I consider, just Android fanboys or rich guys in Riga will like to spend $1980 (Galaxy fold) or $2615 excl.45-tax (Mate X) for wrapping their OS into plastic wear.

Both products are per definitionem non-SOP-level Betas, somehow kind of a functional study...

2. Call me Apple-fanboy, but I never liked that inefficient wireless "free" charging. Apple has been wrapped up here, that's what many people think, even in this Android-horny forum. Pathetic? Sandstorm: If you don't like people here in this forum, you are free to leave... enjoy your beer!

So apart from being one of the worst written and produced tech videos I have ever seen.* Samsung was promoting themselves with fake products in 2013, whilst insinuating that women are just pieces of meat to be fought over with tech AND that women are tech gold diggers and would be swayed about such rubbish.

What's worse is this was first shown at a CES keynote in 2013 and 6 years later they came up with something with a way worse design ( oh and is still not real yet )

*The winner is songsmith - See if you can make it all the way through this...

Yes, they absolutely are stupid, but Apple currently doesn’t even make a phone that isn’t a phablet...
Sad but true.

I'm stunned. The abysses of mankind.
I didn't notice this nonsense at that time, thank God. And shocking: It's not fake.
Page was last updated 2014! That's 25 years ago, ummm... sorry, is it?

So wireless charging WAS really pointless originally. Super slow and require expensive proprietary. This is all different now. Mainly due to USB-C which can carry 100w USB-A Mini / Micro which Sammy and others used was all out of spec and UNLESS you used the provided adaptors was either slow/dangerous. Loads of these Quick Charge 3 adaptors out there a freaking dangerous. I just got sent one with a Charger plate and it swings wildly between 5w and 14w.

As for the Folding stuff... Well apple will do it right at least. Samsung's is an Abomination. Huwai's is much better and the right idea ( why have 3 screens Samsung !? )

The very fact that you are getting angry about this shows your affiliation and I really do wonder why you are even here? The thing you won't find is people that like Apple stuff hawking round a Samsung Forum... it's like going to a Party where no one gives a damn what you are saying.

Your maths are for a three panel fold, my vision is a four panel fold.

Apple's fully bezel-free design of the late 2020's (- 15mm x 2) will bring the folded size of the 12.9" iPad Pro down to:

190 H
69 W

would be about 14mm thick... with hinges and battery. Never going to happen. Apart from everything else I said in my previous post.

It would kill off at least the iPad mini, for the iPhone Mini. These screens are more expensive, so I doubt they would use them in the larger iPads.

You are at least close. It will be several years until thin enough for a three panel unfolding. Then - about an iPhone XS Max size when a phone and a 10 inch iPad when unfolded and with the correct aspect ratios. A phone that opens out with only two panels is either a very bad aspect ratio phone or a bad aspect ratio tablet. A foldable phone / tablet with two panels is definitely just a gimmick. So, let’s see - current implementations are 1) poor aspect ratio for tablet mode and not very large in tablet mode, 2) expensive, 3) plastic screens, 3) seem to have a visible crease or bubble right in the middle of tablet mode screen, 4) ...
So, I think Apple will wait until front and third panel are thin enough (middle panel can be thicker to contain the main components needed for a phone today) with flexible glass that can make a three panel model.

Don't think you understand dimensions or ratios very well. I'd like to see you voodoo origami get close to the large iPad pro... let alone the smaller one.

This year Tim Cook is gonna blow our minds: New airpods, now the case has multiple colors...
