Where is the XOOM selling for $539.00?

In Sam's Club. It was reported yesterday (on Engadget and other sources). And yes, it's cheaper than similarly spec-ed iPad 2 (well, similarity actually ends with storage size, many XOOM specs are better).

revenue

Apple is uniquely situated to charge such a low price for the iPad. They don't price these things arbitrarily -- the retail price of the iPad and the Samsung unit are part of a much bigger business plan. Part of what enables Apple to be so competitive with pricing is that their profit isn't driven by hardware sales alone. They also generate $$$ through app, music, and video sales on the device. That, combined with the fact that they make the software in-house, results in a tightly controlled ecosystem that allows them cut profits on hardware sales, because each unit will generate software revenue.

Samsung probably can't afford to make so little profit on the hardware until they devise a scheme to achieve revenue through other means. Right now, they can't.

No, I was saying how often is there a product that causes other products to not be released.

So for this Samsung tablet, the JooJoo, or that HP Slate it's all because of 1 device: The iPad. That's what I'm counting.

I'm asking about the device that's making that happen. I don't recall other phones being canceled afer the iPhone 4 came out. I don't recall netbooks being canceled after the Macbook Air came out.

Basically, the iPad is the one example I can think of in recent memory.

Ok, I just got the wrong end of the question, but I was supporting you by saying how many products have been affected.

Competitors need to just stop. There's no way they can catch up now...let alone EXCEEDING the competition. They can't even tread water in the same pool!

Hopefully some day there will only be Apple products. It would be great if they could get into retail too and get rid of WalMart and the like. Then they could buy all of the grocery stores and control the food industry. Life would be so much better if there was only Apple to provide us with what we need and want. Just think of the possibilities, it's almost endless. No competition would be better for all of us, less things to think about, post about on the internet, etc. Monopolies are always beneficial to the consumer as history has shown time and time again.

Yah I know its cheaper by memory size, I do pay attention, I just had heard nothing about the wifi model being available.

Too bad there is basically no useful apps available.

I dont need a new web browser, and I dont have time to wait for Moto and Android to finish their products while giving them money upfront.

Need something that works now.

Nice device, that when it is finished, should make a lot of people happy.

But not now, IMO.

If any of you have kids, teach them this; "This is why you do your homework, and why deadlines mean so much in business".

Apple did their homework, learned from the iPhone, and literally beat out all competitors before the competitors could even flinch. Most if not all tablets on the market right now, cannot compete.

I am a proud owner of AAPL today!

It's not a bad unit but they have to make it more accessible by dropping the price. How in the world can anyone expect to sell anything priced higher then an apple product. Same price of an ipad or $100 less. I can see it now XOOM... ZUNE... XOOM... gone & next will be the Galaxy

The killer feature for the iPad has always been the price... As we can see now nobody else can release a comparable device for the same price.

Releasing copycat devices for a higher price is a recipe for Apple Domination in the tablet market for a long time to come.

The only realistic chance I see of anyone coming out with something to compete any time soon is HP/Palm, but they may not get their first iteration out until the end of this year, and by the time they get their feet under them, they will be competing against an iPad 3... but they might be able to give it a go in a second generation... Of course HP/Palm could be a huge failure.

I don't think the Android and pick a hardware company model is going to work for the tablet market.

I still remember how interesting it was to hear all the companies with tablets in development when the iPad came out how they freaked out when Apple announced the price. They all thought it was going to be $999 and they could sell theirs for $799... They are still all trying to sell theirs for $799 lol.

Apple is a copier. From their first PC (from IBM), ...

Technically, the IBM 5100 did start selling a year before the Apple I, for around a 20X higher price. But I fail to see much significant IP in the 5100's design that Woz could have copied. Woz's circuit designs are really strange and wonky.

And, according the the history books, IBM didn't even start designing the PC until several years after the Apple II had been shipping.

They are just being honest. That's a stark contrast to Steve Jobs' BS that we just heard at iPad 2 event (first tablet with dual core CPU, rrrright). Also the original article spreads usual pro-Apple propaganda. Galaxy Tab for US$900? Is this a reference to some European pre-release prices? Just a BS.

If only Steve Jobs was that honest and said - yeah, we screwed up with RAM, and cameras and no-SD card and no 4G.

Obviously, you didn't listen or read the presentation. "...First tablet with dual core that will ship in volume...".
Sure, he screwed up. 15 million happy ipad owners. A ton of copycats after.

Truth hurts, I know :)

What truth? You come in here being disingenuous at every turn. Xoom, seriously you think that integrates better than an iPad? Or is at this point a serious competitor with it's lackluster ecosystem and pricing in the same ballparks? I mean, you're just trollin' dude, that's all you're doing, looking for LULz.

Go find some Xoom forums... OH THAT'S RIGHT then instead of trying to negate the conversation of mostly positive you'd have to listen to basically everyone complaining about how lackluster the Xoom actually is and the overwhelming amount of posts that pretty much read as "I should have bought the iPad."

There ya go, go over there and bash the iPad, you'll be in the minority there too.

Now as you were, back to your worthless contributions and trolling for LULz with your flimsy and wrong logic.

LOLLOLOLOLOLOLOL You could get a job at Samsung you are so misguided.

What part of Apple dominating the tablet market do you not understand?

While apple is looking to sell 15-20 million units in the next quarter, prime competitors are having wtf moments. I suspect you are real bad at picking horses at the track.

.... and this is just for the hardware. Samsung gets the software for free.
What share of the iPad price are R&D-costs for the iOS?

Yeah this is always the craziest part. It is free, but I also think Android is a huge albatross at this point. They end up fighting with other android makers just to represent android before they fight other people. That is fine if there is no other major OS / eco system to fight with, but that is not the case here... Plus they have so much less control... That is why this is fail for them all, because they don't control the software, they don't control the ecosystem and they have to charge more than Apple for the same or inferior hardware.

Why are people so happy with this?! Its frankly embarrassing, "ZOMG ROFL, LOOK AT SAMSUNG LOLOLOL".

I'm HAPPY that Samsung are looking at their product design and spec as it makes my consumer experience much more enjoyable. I'd love to choose between 2, 3 maybe even 4 good tablets. The thought of 95% market share to Apple SHOULD be terrifying for everyone but Apple stockholders (and even then, not in the long run).

The iPad 2 is not perfect, whatever some of you think. I hope this gives Samsung some time to perfect whatever they were working on and bring us something that's a real competitor.

Ultimately, we all lose if Apple dominate the market.

And in an earlier thread, this very device was being boasted about as better than an iPad, yet it is still "vaporware". Final specs maybe not so final, and release date and price non-existent. So there is really only one competitor (in same size class) out there in the Xoom, and the iPad 2 will have no issues of being reviewed as at least an equal, if not better a product. . . . for less.

This article raised a question for me. Has anyone confirmed whether Apple is selling the iPad at a loss as a licensing device? I'm thinking something akin to a gaming unit like the PS3 or Xbox. Microsoft and Sony sold their gaming systems at a loss because they made money licensing games on their system. I'm thinking Apple has pretty much created devices like the iPhone and iPad to sell their Apps. That's where the real money lies.

What do you guys think?

Definitely; competition is good - here's hoping the other players come up with decent (and cheaper!) offerings.

Pretty sure they are making boatloads off ipad sales, loss leaders have NEVER been a part of apple strategy IIRC.

The financial reports should tell you those figures I think

They also make very, very little from apps and music.

You got it all wrong here, this is nothing like the gaming console industry......at all.

Not trying to be a dick, just saying none of that applies in the slightest from my understanding.

It is always amazing. Apple release an update to an existing product. The so called competition that has been busy coping the now out dated previous model is surprised at what they did and goes back to the drawing boards
