The curved side edges of the screen look great in pictures and when on display in a store, but in actual usage it sucks. It's a gimmick to differentiate its appearance from other smartphones.

At its "Unpacked" event in New York City today, Samsung unveiled the all-new Galaxy Note 8 smartphone, following months of speculation about the device's August debut. The event began with a recap video of the Note line's history, including user testimonies following the Note 7's fire-catching scandal and how they continued to support Samsung during the recall.

Looking forward at the new device, the Galaxy Note 8 has a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED "Infinity Display," with an edge-to-edge screen that represents the largest screen ever on any Note device. The display has an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, which allows users to see more content than ever before, according to Samsung. This includes access to a new multitasking feature called "App Pair," which lets users create custom pairs of their favorite apps on the Edge side panel, simultaneously launching two apps to interact with them at once.

The Galaxy Note 8 comes with a new and enhanced S Pen with a finer tip and improved pressure sensitivity. When using the S Pen, users can send "Live Messages" to handwrite text messages -- and add in special effects -- within the text message app. An enhanced screen-off mode lets users quickly jot down notes when the smartphone is turned off, and then save the note to view later.

On the photography side of things, the Galaxy Note 8 has one 8MP front-facing camera and two 12MP rear cameras, and includes optical image stabilization on both of the rear cameras. The rear-facing cameras include one wide-angle f/1.7 lens and one telephoto f/2.4 lens, while the front camera has an aperture of f/1.7.

A "Live Focus" mode lets users take a picture and control the depth of field of everything surrounding the main subject of the image, so users can adjust the bokeh effect before and after the photo is taken.

Expanding the ecosystem of the Note smartphone line, Samsung also introduced "Samsung DeX," which lets the smartphone communicate with a user's PC to seamlessly transfer between working on the go and at home or in an office.

Additionally, the Galaxy Note 8 is water and dust resistant (IP68), includes fast wireless charging, a 3,300 mAh battery, and various biometric authentication options (iris and fingerprint scanning). Samsung's new smartphone has 6GB of RAM, a 10nm processor, and 64GB/128GB/256GB of internal storage, depending on market and carrier availability. The device also keeps the standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

A few websites have already gotten to go hands-on with the Galaxy Note 8, including The Verge, Engadget, CNET, and USA Today. Many sites pointed out the similarities of the device's dual-lens camera system to that of the iPhone 7 Plus, with Engadget noting, "Samsung has a camera setup excellent enough to make iPhone owners consider switching."

Those interested will be able to pre-order the Galaxy Note 8 starting tomorrow, August 24, and the smartphone will then go on sale September 15. In the United States, the device will be available in Midnight Black and Orchid Gray for carrier and Unlocked by Samsung versions, and customers will be able to purchase it at all of the major carriers, as well as Samsung.com, Best Buy, Target and Walmart.

According to a Verizon press release, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will cost $40/month for 24 months, or $960 at retail. The Verge reports that the smartphone will cost $930 at T-Mobile and $950 at AT&T.

For any original Note 7 owners, CNET noted that Samsung will be offering a discount on Note 8 devices: purchasing the smartphone through Samsung.com will allow previous Note 7 users to receive an instant trade-in credit of up to $425 when upgrading a current phone to Note 8. In addition, anyone at all who purchases a Note 8 between August 24 and September 24, 2017 has the chance to get either a free Samsung Gear 360 camera or a free Galaxy Foundation kit with a 128GB memory card and fast wireless charger.

Looks nice, but its a big square a$$ box, no thanks, and they could have done better with the fingerprint scanner.

Issue there is that developers aren't making much money on Android. I think iOS on the iPhone will take a front seat on iOS 12. Then they will continue to go back and forth between iPhone and iPad.
Yes I'll give you that one as far the money goes. See I really thought with this being a banner year for anniversary's Apple would really step up on IOS 11 and while the iPad got a clear kick in the butt.. the phone was pretty much left out. Seems like they just keep putting little band-aids on the system. IOS 11 on the phones could have just been IOS 10.4 or 10.5, minor changes to more fluency and dependability. I would have bought that concept.

Riiiiiiiight. That's total BS. My 6+ (with 1GB) can't even cache a single web page. Has to hit the network EVERYTIME I leave the page and go back.
Not BS. My personal experience. But try an iPhone 6S then with 2GB of RAM. I can open almost 10 apps and have none of them reloading when going back.

I could never use iOS again. Thats such a restricted OS to remain in. You guys suffer but enjoy your limitations at the same time ironically. Its almost like you are brainwashed and will accept anything apple gives although they seem to remove more than what they give lately.

Does anyone need to go to SamsungRumors tell them how bad Samsung is and how good Apple is?

Enjoy your Google software, then!

It's laughable that the newest Android phone won't even ship with the latest Android OS.

Basically every feature of the latest android has already been pioneered by Samsung in some way or form. As long as we get security updates like we do for the most part, samsungs latest devices already has things that vanilla android o will never have.

App pair sounds similar to how iOS11 will relaunch previously paired applications on an iPad. I like the idea of being able to link the pair together to do a fresh launch, though, I don’t know that I would need dual applications often enough to have a button , shortcut, or icon for it.

Still not personally won over by curved screens, but they do look nice.

Apple's IOS hasn't matured at all and they have massive restrictions on what developers can and cannot do. Even though the tools they provide allow developers to make some amazing enhancements, end of the day Apple controls most of your device.

Under the hood, iOS has had incredible growth over the last few years. In the last 3-4 we've seen major expansion of extensibility and a further growth of background APIs as a response to some of the biggest complaints from developers.

Overall though, I don't find their rules all so restrictive. I think any standard app developer should be able to work within constraints of an environment without issue. I sure have a lot of fun with it.

Is there something specific?

Envy? He's not the one trying to hype a Samsung product on MacRumors.

Im supporting the device since a thread was made to support it or state your opinions. My opinion is clear. I see envy. Can you change my opinion..no? I didnt try to change yours.

Yeah no thanks. The iPhone 6 has literally better RAM management with 1GB of RAM than Sammy has with 6GB of RAM. It's embarrassing at this point. Looks good though.

No it doesn't. IOS app state suspend/restore is faking it by taking and restoring a screenshot of the app's last state. You should really do some basic research instead of spreading FUD.

Issue for Apple, or really for us, is that the iPhone sells itself. They do add great features every year though and the software continues to get better and better. We overlook a lot of the smaller features they add, instead looking for something major year in and year out. iOS is pretty mature, it should slow to every other for bigger features.

Microsoft has passed Apple with the sexiest laptops and Samsung has passed them with sexiest phones. The N8 is nice, but I can't see going bigger and heavier than my s8+. I hardly used the pen on any Note I've owned. Going to pass and see what LG and Apple offers.

Why? Is Samsung paying you or something? I don't go to Android Authority when a new iPhone launches and start playing the hypeman. It reeks of desperation.
