Samsung's software is excellent. My S8 works great. The Note 8 will work great and have the spen and new cameras. Can't wait. Conversly, my iphone also has the refreshes. Still, both are great phones. Even with the refreshes, my iPad is awesome. All have some peculiarities that can be annoying. Overall, they're very good. Also, I'm anxiously awaiting the iPhone 8 and 7s and 7s+.

I could never use iOS again. Thats such a restricted OS to remain in. You guys suffer but enjoy your limitations at the same time ironically. Its almost like you are brainwashed and will accept anything apple gives although they seem to remove more than what they give lately.

lol you know there are Android forums right? Seems like the majority of your posts are ******** on anything Apple. Surprised you're not banned yet.

Absolutely the best phone of the year. Every feature and more is here and we still have a headphone jack lol. You just cant get any better. The ultimate phone...once again iphone fanboys will be envious.

iPhone fanboy here and not envious. No desire to own that phone.

Since when has there been whiney Android users on MacRumors forums?
Jealousy I presume. It does raise an interesting issue though: if you have a mobile device/platform that you're happy with, why would you feel the need to ridicule others that use a different device/platform? It's one think to point out misconceptions or ignorance of a given product when people mistake facts about it, but why would one concern themselves that other people are content using other products? I don't think that is a product issue, but rather a psychological issue. I guess that is a general issue with trolling - seeking any kind of attention, even negative attention.

In terms of the Note 8, it is a very impressive looking device (although I think that the aspect ration looks a little strange to me - too tall) with impressive technology. It really is astounding the technology that can be put into such a small form factor nowadays. In my past experience with Samsung and other Android devices it seemed like the phones were cheaper built and more difficult to use due to an over-complicated interface and poor integration of the hardware and software. That was a few years ago, so it would be interesting to see a modern device like the Note 8. With that said, I'm too well ingrained in the Apple ecosystem to invest in a change just because a new smartphone came out that had some cool features on it. I'm perfectly happy with my 7+ and I'm sure the same will be said of the iPhone 8 when I get it.

This looks so much better than the iPhone 8 devices we've seen leaked. The screen, which is stunning, takes centre stage whereas the iPhone 8 has that horrendous sensor notch cutting in. The iPhone 8 is up there with the smart battery case in terms of poor design. They could have developed a solution that looks more visually pleasing but instead they just rushed it. If Samsung had iOS I'd be all over this phone.

My thoughts exactly. In a perfect world, whoever is designing Samsung Phones would be poached by Apple. The iP8 leaks look horrendous. They remind me of test units or something. Definitely not the final product that I would expect from a company that prides itself on design simplicity.

Are you seriously comparing a plastic stylus for a smartphone to the Apple Pencil with 32-bit RISC ARM-based Cortex-M3 MCU from ST Micro, a Bluetooth chip from Cambridge Silicon Radio, pressure and tilt/angle sensors, etc.?

Yet I can do more with the s pen than you can with ya gigantic apple pencil.

I don't like the curved edges, but other than that it's a nice looking phone. I might even like it better than the mocked up iPhone '8' pics, which makes me sad.

Also kudos for still including a heapdhone jack socket.

Too big a phone for my tastes anyway though, and I prefer iOS, despite the things I don't like about iOS.

So, it’s basically the Samsung audio jack.

For Samsung-compatible headphones, while the rest of the world is using Bluetooth.

See how that works?

Not sure if serious...?!

Those trashing the phone because of the software likely haven't used an S7 or S8 recently or for long enough.

This is how near-bezel-less displays should be, by not wasting screen space with camera or sensors.

But nowadays, there are sub-$450 phones that will likely be just as promising as this at over $900. Hard to justify a phone at that cost.

It really looks like a block from far away, Samsung really wants, again to take you to what a smartphone dimensions can be...162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6 mm, whats next? no matter what the screen size is, i want a pock able, easy to use smartphone

It's 4 mm longer and 3 mm narrower than the iPhone Plus models. Pretty much identical and the plus models are selling at a very good rate. Apparently a lot of people find that is not too big. Options are good.

One thing in which high-end Samsung phones beat any iPhone ever manufactured: audio capture. Audio recording on iPhone is just ridiculous concerning dynamic range. Samsung has made phones capable of capturing pressure levels of ~130dB SPL.

The difference in audio quality also has to do with iPhone recording in mono and Samsung in stereo.

Man this is the last time I come to an Apple forum to read about an Android device, I'm OUT!.

Meh.

The S8 is a stunning smartphone let down by some very strange hardware decisions (Bixby button/position of the fingerprint reader) and this seems to be more of the same. Typical Samsung really, they've really upped their game in recent years design wise but they always seem to spoil it.

Say what you like about Apple but they tend to get the hardware decisions right and avoid these kind of peculiarities.

Lets hope they don't once again have issues with fires.

I personally think 18.5:9 is too tall. Even apple is gonna have a terrible aspect ratio.

IMO the best way to go is a 16:9 display as screen tallness is no good if you are just as wide or narrower as other phones.

Personally I found the aspect ratio of the original iPhone to be perfect. Give me a 150% bigger iPhone 4S and I would be quite happy.

Meh,not much of an upgrade from the s8, they could’ve at least moved the fingerprint reader to an easier to reach position.

like i said, people bought iphone 6 or 7 more than the bigger one because of its dimensions, The note 8 its too tall...even taller than S8+ and wider for just 0.1" iphone plus is already a physical big phone, but this...im sry, but i think Apple is doing the right thing to come with a pro model between the 2 iphones dimensions

As an audio guy... I'm getting this for the audio support. DSD, 32bit audio and free AKG headphones since Samsung bought Harman.

Wav and Flac uhd audio built in. DSD 1 bit audio built in.

Take my money Sammy.

Samsung has Bluetooth 5.0 on board.
They give you options, because they seem to care about the customer.

New tech is on new phone. Waaaaaaat?!?

The Apple way is:
Put Earpods with Lightning connector to the box, which nobody uses (it's not even an "Apple audio jack", since you cant plug it into a Macbook)

Nobody uses the stock iPhone earphones? Funny I see lots of people use them at the gym, running and as their default on the go buds.

Then they also throw in an adapter which you have to carry around.

They give you a free adapter you have to carry around like you carry around headphones? But poor baby can't bring an itty bitty adapter

And when you do use it, like my friends do in their cars, you get noise because the adapter is made poorly.

Tell your friends that they either take care of their stuff poorly or they all have defects. Mine is great almost a year in.

The curved side edges of the screen look great in pictures and when on display in a store, but in actual usage it sucks. It's a gimmick to differentiate its appearance from other smartphones.

Agreed, I can't believe they've stuck with that gimmick for so long.

In addition, for all the grief that Apple gets for not radically changing the iPhone's design from year-to-year, Samsung's flagship devices have worn the same clothes for the last half-decade. All they really did was remove the front button, and nows its sexy? C'mon.

You point to the SPen - yeah its a nice gimmick but not a feature that is needed on a handheld phone.
Don't see much of the innovation coming from Samsung other than a pretty screen. Get past the nice looking screen and its all Android. Then the sadness begins.

It's no gimmick, the spen is great on a handheld. Also, there's no sadness with android.

I have the S8+. And i'm going to switch back when the iphone 8 comes out. Visually, it is stunning, but after running it through all my apps, its just slow switching back and forth.

I actually like it for the frontier S3 watch. that is a big winner and it doesn't work well with an iphone. Damn you!!

At this point, it is all about software. The hardware on phones has been pretty top notch for at least the last couple of years. For example, the ipad feels fresh because IOS11 breathed life into it, and is really attempting to make it a laptop replacement.

Meanwhile Oreo brought Android Notif badges Ala Apple. It's gonna be a good year for Apple

I find this post (and the one you replied to) interesting given that this article is about a Samsung device, yet the Android owners are the ones who are whining, jealously no less. Hilarious.

To be honest, I have yet to be disatisfied with any of the 4 Galaxy devices I've owned, other than the loss of features due to Samsung's bad habit of trying to copy Apple sometimes (#1 being the loss of a replaceable battery).

In my view they're the only ones really giving Apple a run for their (figurative) money (Apple sells more iPhones than any other company's single device), and the one true iPhone alternative for power users.

So the only jealousy I can speak to is me wanting all the features I have on my Note5 today (let alone this new, beautiful beast) on iPhone so I can have my integration cake and eat it too with a spoonful of "do-everything-without-restrictions-on-my-device" frosting.

Alas, this is Apple we're talking about. They have to leave something out for next year's model. Smart, really.
