"For a 4.7-inch screen, a PPI of exactly 555 is absolutely required to be able to directly map all images/graphics/icons to the new screen." --> I never said it's required for them to do a 4.7" display, I said it's required for the screen to be able to directly map all images/graphics/icons and prevent them from looking like this. Sure they can do a 4.7-inch screen without matching the 1:4 pixel ratio, but then every single app will look like crap until developers re-master every graphic used in their apps, a change that is much greater than simply adding new pixels in the Y-direction for the 5/5S, which some developers still haven't done for the 5/5S! And developers will now have to create, support, and fix 2 completely separate UIs for the 4/4S/5/5S and the new 6, rather than simply creating, supporting, and fixing one UI that work for all 4/4S/5/5S phones.

As I stated in my edit - somehow, it works on Android as not all apps look like crap (at least on phones). My guess is, Apple has some dev tools equipped to help.

Credible sources say it'll happen. Apple won't release something that screws with app quality. Therefore I believe there's something in between that will allow for the sources to be right, and Apple to keep its app quality.

I find it amusing how people take this all so seriously. I mean I own my fair share of Apple products but I don't feel the need to belittle the competition. Truth be told the S5 looks like a pretty good upgrade coming from the S5, and what people fail to release is that this is the phone market. You buy a new phone and a better one comes out next month.

Truth be told if you look at some of the impressions of this phone it seems to look pretty positive, 16MP camera in which sensor size may not matter but it is still pretty impressive; fully waterproof, something Apple still has to beat; AC wifi, not present on the current 5S, 1080P screen, which trumps any iPhone screen yet. Basically the phone market moves forward, Apple came out with the 5S to beat the S4 and now Samsung come back with the S5 and therefore the iPhone 6 is just around the corner and will probably once again best the S5.

I really don't get people who try and defend their phone as being the "best". As there really isn't one.

Ya, ya, ya.....these types of risks exist anyways. Should it have gone unnoticed as long as it did? No....but all-in-all, I wouldn't use this one instance to paint Apple as overall poor on security.

And really, the security of the fingerprint sensor really has nothing to do with an SSL bug that went unnoticed.

I fail to see what size has to do with it. Apple's works, Samsung's doesn't (at least not as well). Future tech (under screen) is irrelevant to this argument.

Size is important because if Apple releases iPhone with 5.1" screen with the round button/sensor this phone will be the size of Ipad Mini.

Same plastic material since the first Galaxy phone. And yet they're calling the Galaxy S5 a premium phone.

Occasionally, when walking around with one hand occupied, such as carrying a lost cat, the phone rings.

am I the only one these days who when he's out and aboot he's not grabbing his phone to use any an all times.

One of the big complaints a lot of you guys are making against 5" phones is that you can't one hand use them (though many can, everyones use is different) and since you can't one hand use them, there's all these inconveniences from not being able to use your phone with some ridiculously long list.

How about.

Maybe in those situations you don't NEED TO USE YOUR PHONE!

I think i'm getting old and cantankerous. Cause I'm starting to get really damn sick of everyone, always having these bloody things in their hands instead of focusing on their task at hand.

nobody is belittleing Samsung - we're just pointing out the obvious. And that is that this phone is just disgusting. Just when i thought that Samsung couldnt put out an uglier phone BAM, here comes the s5. I mean just look at new Sony experia z2, it's beautiful. Or the new HTC Desire phablet - again beautiful, Huawei also put out a nicely looking phone. Nokia with this new Icon created a great phone and then there is S5. I mean it's like comparing design from Yugo and the all new Mercedes S class.

They don't get it. Now there is a watch, a phone, and a fitness band.

Remember the iPhone launch?
We are introducing three new products. A music player. A phone. An internet communication device.

If Apple can simply combine devices, they win.

It's nice, but I have no need for a fingerprint scanner... I plan to jump to the Galaxy Note 3

I love my iPhone, but iOS 7 did nothing for me... guess its time to try out kitkat

Why has nobody asked where the fingerprint data is being stored? There was such a huge kerfuffle when Apple announced their fingerprint scanner, people freaking out about privacy and the government having access to it (even though Apple made a very large point in the keynote about it having a secure enclave). Now that there's a fingerprint scanner on the world's most insecure mobile OS nobody seems to mind. It's always so one-sided.

Because Samsung pays them to be quite. Apple doesn't.

Dear Google,

Please don't kill off the Nexus line. OEMs aren't getting it done.

Thanks,
The world

Google has nothing to do with the Nexus line. LG designs and makes it.

Yes, because Samsung copied apple waterproof phone……..

I wouldn't trust Samsung any more than this.

these phones take 2-3 years to bring to market and the parts makers shop their wares at trade shows and to everyone so everyone has an idea of the features in upcoming phones. no one is copying anyone

Some aspects need to be planned ahead of time, but they don't take 2-3 years to bring to market. We've slapped products together in a little over a year and we're considered a slow follower.

In fact, the original iPhone was considered a non-product by Steve jobs 2 months before he unveiled it. They shipped it 6 months after it was unveiled.

You also have to remember that Apple patents and rumors are talked about long before Apple introduces them, if ever, giving its competitors enough lead time to anticipate and introduce similar products/features. For example, rumors about the fingerprint scanner was talked about even before Apple all but confirmed it with the purchase of Authentec, giving Samsung almost 2 years to work on their version.

All eyes are on Apple. They can rarely surprise the industry like they used to when they were just a Mac and iPod vendor.

There's a difference between assumptions and straight-up science/facts. It’s hilarious that people are actually believing all the rumors about a larger iPhone 6 screen size without knowing anything about how screen technology / pixel mapping works. For a 4.7” screen, a PPI of exactly 555 is absolutely required to be able to directly map all images/graphics/icons to the new screen. Under a non-1:1 or 1:4 pixel ratio, any app that does not re-master all of its graphics, images, and icons will essentially look like this:

Image

...i.e. the problem found in many Android apps where pixel ratios are all over the place. Without that, every graphic in every app would need to be re-mastered for the new screen, increasing development time/cost for all 3rd-party (and 1st-party) developers (many of which simply would not update, and as a result their apps would look like crap on the new phone and app store ratings would suffer) and requiring support for a completely new pixel ratio, in addition to support for the 5 screen size and the 4 screen size (which both maintain the same 1:1 pixel ratio, just simply more pixels in the y-direction for the 5/5S).

Not only are such high PPI screens nowhere to be found in ANY mass-produced consumer electronics device on the market (the closest is the HTC One at 468 PPI), the battery power drainage and heat emission from a 2xretina would be huge, requiring a substantially larger battery or extraordinary improvements in battery technology, which would only add to the costs, lowering their profit margins significantly on their most profitable product.

Every indication, especially today's reveal of the S5 PPI, supports the conclusion that the iPhone 6 will not have a larger screen size.

Apple is going to do the same thing as last time, same PPI and any apps running the smaller screen size will stay its normal size and not use the bigger screen unless it is updated.

Lame spec update that doesn't address the biggest problem with the Galaxy line. They still look cheap.

The heart rate sensor is the worst type of gimmick proliferation. Having a heart rate monitor in a phone is a fine idea but I want it remotely monitoring my chest sensor, not requiring me to hold the phone and wait for it to measure my finger.

Was thinking about updating my old S2 to this but it's not improved beyond the rest of the competition. The Sony Z2 looks more impressive in almost every department.

This.

Also I don't understand the redundancy around the heart rate monitor on both the gear fit and the actual phone. If people are into the whole tech health thing then they will buy the fit and not need the sensor on the phone. Meanwhile if they aren't into the whole health tech thing then they won't use the heart rate sensor on the phone. Seems like a stab at a "we were first" claim to put it on the phone.

Google has nothing to do with the Nexus line. LG designs and makes it.

The tablets (Nexus 7/10) are made by Asus.

Before LG made the Nexus phones Samsung did (Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S - Samsung hardware works so much better with stock Android on it) and the Nexus One was made by HTC.

Google decides who is going to make the Nexus devices and has input into the design.

Its water resistant, which is basically the cap they puted on the mini usb port. Put it in water and look what will happen. Samsung S5 is not waterproof, just with a little water resistant, just like any electronic watch you may find as a gift in your snacks bag.

The S5 is rated to withstand being in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes, which should take care of most water related phone accidents.

Well, except for being left in pants put into washing machines :)

Apple allowed iPhone apps to be displayed in horrible double-pixel mode when the iPad first came out. Then, to a much lesser degree, Apple simply put a black band on apps that didn't take advantage of the newer iPhone's greater display length.

So there's history that Apple is okay with some display goofiness until developers catch up.

If Samsung EVER did something that wasn't a blatant rip off of something already been done before, I'll faint from shock.

Fingerprint scan?

I wonder if your scan just you pinky on your left hand and then after it's set up you go and try your right index finger if it lets you in?

I'm betting this scanner is a scam. It just lets you in because you selected to touch that area and it really does not detect your fingerprint.

Old Nokia phones, the ones that were nigh-impossible to destroy, were made out of plastic. So don't think plastic automatically means poor build quality.
