Why has nobody asked where the fingerprint data is being stored? There was such a huge kerfuffle when Apple announced their fingerprint scanner, people freaking out about privacy and the government having access to it (even though Apple made a very large point in the keynote about it having a secure enclave). Now that there's a fingerprint scanner on the world's most insecure mobile OS nobody seems to mind. It's always so one-sided.

Fingerprint data stored at Samsung Cloud server and will become property of Samsung which has the right to use it at It discretion.

Samsung is God

It is painfully obvious Apple won't pull an Android anytime soon and release a device with some crazy screen size. Apple will release a larger screen, and they will make it match the rest of their devices. Simple as that.

Ok, to match their current devices, that means they would have to keep the same total # of pixels but in a larger frame, so the pixel density would go down, probably below Retina levels, which would not be very good for them.

The only other option would be to quadruple the pixels as they did from the 3GS to the 4, to conform to the 1:4 pixel ratio, or else an avalanche of issues will occur.

In order to quadruple the pixels and fit them into a 4.7" diagonal screen, they would require a PPI of 555. Not only are such high PPI screens nowhere to be found in ANY mass-produced consumer electronics device on the market (the closest is the HTC One at 468 PPI), the battery power drainage and heat emission from a 2xretina would be huge, requiring a substantially larger battery or drastic improvements in battery technology, which would only add to the costs, lowering their profit margins significantly on their most profitable product.

If they don't conform to either a 1:1 or 1:4 pixel ratio like so, they would be "pulling an Android" and a domino effect of 3rd party app issues/problems would ensue.

They didn't copy squat from Apple.

Unfortunately, from the videos it doesn't look like you can do it one handed because it has to be swiped straight up and down. I love the fact that I can pick up my 5s and whether its either of my thumbs or pointer fingers, I can click the button and leave it on to unlock my screen.

Do love how they went with the original Nexus 7-style backing.

All in all, I think the SGS5 is a solid release. Just not enough to break me away from my Apple circle.

I agree. This looks like a great phone and it will come in several hundred dollars cheaper than an iPhone. The design is still superior to the 5C in terms of plastic in my opinion.

The fingerprint scanner can be used with one hand if you scan your print while holding with one hand during setup. I've seen reports in other places explaining this.

Actually the flagship Galaxy phones are normally priced similar to the latest iPhone of the time.

Subsidies might be better as carriers can stick their own apps on there and they control the updates so a carrier would rather you use a device they can mess with.

Thanks for the clarification. I figured I was just looking at it wrong.

I've slowly discovered that I'm an aesthetics person. I love the feel and look of precisely crafted aluminum. My 5s, my MacBook Pro, my iPad Air, my HTC One... All gorgeous devices. While plastic may work for some, it doesn't for me. Especially since I owned an S2, S3, Note 2, and S4.

I have never been a fan of Samsung's industrial design, but this S5 is so unattractive it baffles me.

And Samsung managed to make the camera bump on the back of the camera even uglier. The finger scanner implementation is horrible. The S5 already looks like a tired design.

Another great post from PhoneRumors. I guess they've gotta keep posting SOMETHING while Apple fails to innovate with their Macs.

You've not seen the new Mac Pro yet?

----------

We'll have to agree to disagree on this point.

Comparing a market with one handset to another market with hundreds of different handsets dosent really work.

It's all the same smartphone market though?

Why do people keep saying that Motorola Atrix had the 1st fingerprint scanner on a mobile phone? You're all WRONG! The Pantech PG-6200 had one back in 2006. That's 5 years before the Atrix.

The home key looks unsurprisingly like the home button on the iPhone 5S ..Ironically the S5 doesn't have a circular one #

Oh boy, lol. Neither of those resolutions conform to a 1:1 or 1:4 ratio of total pixels.

The iPhone 5/5S has 727,040 total pixels.
A 1280 x 720 screen has 921,600 total pixels.
A 1366 x 768 screen has 1,049,088 total pixels.

Remember that if the new screen does not conform to a 1:1 or 1:4 pixel ratio, developers will have to write 2 completely separate UIs, one for iPhone 6 and one for everything else (5/5S/4/4S/lower), increasing development cost/time and maintenance cost/time (and many developers would think the cross-platform cost would not be worth the benefit, or simply won't have the time to optimize their apps to work on each platform).

Sure they can make a screen that does not match the 1:4 pixel ratio, but then every single app will look like crap until developers re-master every graphic used in their apps, a change that is much greater than simply adding new pixels in the Y-direction as they did for the 5/5S, which some developers still haven't done for the 5/5S! And developers (including Apple themselves) will now have to create, support, and fix 2 completely separate UIs for the 4/4S/5/5S and the new 6, rather than simply creating, supporting, and fixing one UI that works for all 4/4S/5/5S/6 phones.

They have a distinct advantage in 3rd party apps over Android and making a change to the pixel ratio would introduce more crappy graphics/images/icons/UI in 3rd party apps, cause cross-platform/legacy support problems, create more work for developers, cause more bad ratings in the app store, and would greatly harm their competitive advantage, something they would not want to risk.

Who's the clueless one now?

I don't want to challenge your knowledge on this (as its clearly more than my own)..But as in the past i'd point out that a 4 inch iPhone 6 aint coming .. Rest assured..Its going to be 4.5+ and may even spot two different sizes...I do not know how apple will manage the transition, but they will ! :)

This is the stupidest thing I've read on this site in a long, long time. Thank you.

You've been on this site since before the original iPhone, and you post about once a month (if that)... yet you go out of your way to spew garbage about Macs? You must really, really love to hate Apple.

Someday you'll feel that way about wireless charging and larger screens.
Wireless charging sure. Larger screens no. I've used a 27 inch iMac for over a month in a go. I went back to my own 21.5 inch and I actually preferred it. On the other hand I still think the iPad Mini is a bad size and the original iPad size is better. I also think a larger iPad or phablet is a bad idea and hope Apple never do them.

I'm not for or against larger/smaller screen sizes. I take each case separately and judge based on that.

If you don't care about certain news, you shouldn't waste your time reading it. And if a lot people who felt like you did the same, the people who run the site will notice there are less ''clicks'' on specific topics they post. They'll know there is less interest in these topics in question and they will start posting less and less of it.

I think that's a better solution. What you are doing is brining them more clicks (loaded ads etc.), i.e. giving sings you're interested into what they just posted.

This achieves nothing. The masses still click on everything. You alone can do nothing. And the websites put out what they want to regardless of how off topic to the website's theme or how poorly it's written.

Either you accept it or you move on to another website.

If the new iPhone offers two models (one with a bigger screen) and storages starts at 32GB I think Samsung could be in a world of hurt. The S5 ROM is around 8GB and rumors are the initial device coming to the USA will be 16GB model.

Works terribly for me, but maybe I have a broken one. Haven't gotten around to getting it swapped out at an Apple store yet.

The one thing about Samsung that I really dig is they are not being lazy with the sensor and letting it function for other stuff and apps. I'll bet they open it up to devs to include in their apps. I am pretty miffed that Apple has severely limited the fp sensor to only unlock the phone and for itunes, it's kind of like they know it doesn't work that well.

It is called security. Want your print stolen from a malicious Android developer? Be my guest.

It's just like how the iPhone 2g had no cut/paste, no SDK and no 3G on release day. Apple have restricted it's touchID for a reason. Maybe in the future it'll be open to developers if it can be kept secure.

I prefer to trust the various sources (like the WSJ), who have proven themselves credible, that Apple is indeed ready to release a larger display iPhone this year. The likes of which has probably been in R&D for years.

And that is your mistake. You think the WSJ is credible. A larger sized iPhone will become plausible when part leaks come about. This is just people wanting a phablet now. Not realising it's not what they really need now and in the future.

They already are. They have increasing competition from other more attractive or/and similar powerful but cheaper Android devices. The sales figures of the S4 didn't meet expectations. Samsung seems (unlike for example Sony or HTC) to have great difficulty in coming up with attractive or innovative designs. Probably hectically last minute implementation of some sensors will most likely not wow potential customers anymore. 'Useful' Software implementation is clearly not really a stronghold of Samsung either.

And that was without :apple: competing in the "big screen phone" arena.

What rumours can we spread to see if Samsung will stick them in a product?

The AppleTV set will have a built in pedometer and built in battery for those who like to watch TV on the move.

The iWatch will be able to analyse blood and urine looking for signs of disease (it would be a laugh watching them demo the Samsung Wee or would it be called Galaxy Gear with S-piss technology)

We've not seen many people producing phones with built in projectors. That's something Samsung could explore.

Samsung Wee sunds like Nintendo Wii. Lawsuit time.

Parts will start leaking at around May.A bigger iphone is coming.

You don't know this. You are just talking out your behind. It could happen, it might not. Lets wait and see if it happens.

oh boy that pen. i remember getting my iPhone 2G back in the day and everyone asked me why i would use a touch screen device with my fingers (everyone was used to a pen on win mobile and nokia back then) and here we are with samsung bringing back that damn pen no ones asking for as no one else seems to take samsungs "idea" of a pen thus far ;)

I for one want a pen, try taking notes without one. The capacitive styluses are terrible. The samsung note with stylus and built in holder is what I want in the next bigger iphone.
