Really? Samsung will attract some people but this is not about that. Even if Apple released foldable iPhone I would still say the same. The product is DOA simply because its stupid idea. Too many compromises for very little benefits. So the only blind person here is probably you because you are so blinded in your box that you forgot to think outside of it :)
Not at all (you're talking nonsense) if Samsumg released this "foldable device" it would just be one of many things Samsumg releases. It could be successful or fail and it would'nt matter in the grand scale of things (Samsung make freakin' oilrigs and bulldozers) if Apple chose to make a foldable device they would be betting the farm on it.

One person's "stupid idea" is another person's "where have you been all my life, this is great".

I cannot believe people still upvote this ****.

I cannot believe Apple made something (2018 iPad Pro) so lacking in structural integrity it bent before even getting to customers. Then had the gall to charge 25% more on the previous model. On the other hand maybe I can (butterfly keyboard, touchbar)

Someone has to be first. Phones didn't progress from Palm Pilots to Pocket PCs to iPhone and Android by sitting in a lab waiting for it to be perfected. They tried stuff by putting it in people's hands, saw what worked and what didn't, then refined the next version. The Fold is just the next evolution. It may work, it may not. They will find better ways to fold the screen, and so forth.

They may make this phone happen. Still doesn't stop it being;
Very thick
Fugly
Stupid Aspect ratio
Pointless in every way.

At least the MateX looks nice but still with a stupid ratio.

Three of those four are simply your opinion. (yes, it is thick)

I've never seen anyone claim Apple invented anything that another phone had first. Where does this even come from?
They did [multi touch technology on the first iPhone, whereas Xerox have demonstrated that tech couple of years prior. The difference is, Xerox didn't do it on the phone but on a huge display]

Very well said. In 5 years this may be laughed at as a stupid idea that went nowhere. On the other hand, there may be a much refined model which millions of users happily use. No one is forcing anyone to buy one now. Let's see what happens.

A useless device.

When it’s folded it's basically a large clunky phone with a small screen. When it’s unfolded you get a tablet with an odd aspect ratio that developers will ignore (like they do with current Android tablets).

Developers have already figured out useful and easy ways to make information accessible on current phone screens (for example, having an entire screen hidden that can "slide over" when you need quick access).

While I wouldn't call it useless you make a good point regarding developers.

Software is often an ignored point in looking at devices in a holistic fashion.

A device like this points to the future, but like Steve said a while back: those who are serious about hardware must create their own software (or something like that).

Sammy would need to do a lot of custom platform work at the software level AND make sure devs out there are committed to using it.

I don't think iOS is the best platform for a few things (their Mail app is my pet peeve), but it is certainly one of, if not the best when it comes to the integration of hardware and software as well as dev commitment to the platform.

I’m sorry, but when you have as many design problems as the original units had, the best thing to do is to start over. I’m positive we’ll be hearing about more design flaws once this thing is out.

Hence why the market is flooded with junk.

True, but you (we) cannot stop people from buying what they want. The more choice the better. I don't listen to Drake or purchase his albums because I think it is crap. But that is my opinion. His sales prove that others feel differently.

This is destined to become another Samsung flop up there with the likes of exploding Note 7 and exploding washing machines!!!

It would be healthier and happier for you to cheer innovation (even if it flops) rather than to pan it. A bit of bitterness there, no?

Unless they were able to isolate a few key flaws. Only time will tell! Foldables will be a big thing in the future, but it will be painful in the near-term. Just happy Samsung had the guts to give it a go.

Oh dear, really? I have nothing against Samsung here, in fact, recently they seem to be on better pace than Apple but this is not the point here. Forget Samsung or any brand. Folding display is just bad bad bad idea. It will be niche product and in essence its just a flex muscle product and nothing more. DOA from the start.

It doesn't matter though because there will be people who will buy this.
Have you never used a product in your life and said to yourself : who the hell designed this?
There is more junk on the market then anyone can imagine. Anyway, you want your foldable phone it seems as you think its a good idea I on the other hand thing its DOA as the concept in general is flawed from the start.
I guess we won't be friends :D :D :D

Of course, you are right.
The problem is at the start of the process. How about if instead of inventing useless junk we focus on good stuff/products? Wouldn't that be better overall for everyone? This is hard circle to break away from as most companies focus only on money. Very few focus on good product and money.
It should always be that good product is core of the company and then it goes from there.

I do see the benefits of having a phone on one side and an iPad Mini unfolded. This would kill the Plus/Max phablets that are unruly & awkward in the pocket.

What you describe is pretty cool.

However... what Samsung did is put a rather small and narrow phone on the outside. It probably won't be a joy to use for anything more than reading a notification... so you'll have to open the device.

It's almost like Samsung started with a tablet... and then folded it in half and put the bare-minimum "phone" on the outside.

I'd prefer something with a Galaxy 10 sized screen on the outside... and then it opens up into a tablet. At least you'd get a good "phone" experience when folded and a good "tablet" experience when unfolded.

But as it is now... the "phone" is almost an afterthought. If you want to do anything serious... you're unfolding it into a large two-handed tablet.

And it's twice as thick as a normal phone. Say what you want about unruly & awkward phablets... but they are actually very slim.

You want a folding phone to shrink the X and Y axis... but you're forgetting the Z axis.

Maybe in the future when they can make both halves half as thick as the current Galaxy Fold... so the folded phone is a similar thickness to a normal phone... then they'll have something. But right now it's like sticking a TV remote in your pocket.

To me... the Galaxy Fold is the unruly & awkward device. :p

Sure... this is just a first (2nd) attempt. Things always get better. But a phone that's half as thick also has a battery that's half as thick.

Unless there are huge battery gains coming... I don't think you'll see a slimmer folding phone anytime soon.

And plastic screens, man. Come on. We left those 10 years ago. I think that's what would bother me the most.

Even if I enjoyed using the outside screen for simple tasks... and then unfolded the phone to browse the web on a tablet-sized screen... I'd still be mashing my fingers against a soft plastic screen. Yuck.

There is talk about flexible glass. Maybe we'll get that when we get super-capacity thin batteries. :)

I expect this to fail, but I hope it doesn't.

Not everything has to be all things to all people, folks.

For some, just the cool-factor of folding the phone will cause them enough pleasure to make the device worth it for them, despite its shortcomings.

This may be heresy for some here but Apple is not the best at EVERYTHING. They do some things that make it worth it for some of us.

Could someone please resurrect Steve Jobs.

Tech world has completely gone dumb & numb since his departure.
Sigh...
I love technology, but during the past few years it has grown stale and become boring. It used to be a vibrant scene.

I guess you can't keep up forever...

I bolded your statement that is 100% correct. That was the raison d'être of the Apple of old. Unfortunately this is now ancient history. All we can do is:

1. Raise a glass to those days and for those of us old enough, feel privileged that we experienced that era.
2. Demand that Apple and other companies do better.

The only ways for us to do so are to:

1. Continually communicate our displeasure
2. Don't purchase inferior products
3. Direct our funds towards products and companies which we feel are quality and serve our needs better

Why can't people comprehend that Samsumg might actually do this? That is an actual arguemement. If you're gonna be pedantic and say "they've showed nothing that works so far" well so has NOBODY ELSE IN THE INDUSTRY; does that mean it's never gonna happen? (and ....psssst it might come from Samsung)

You think they solved all the issues with the original unit in only a couple months? Did the laws of physics change recently? Did Android developers suddenly do a complete 180 and start taking tablets seriously?

Samsung has never had any luck getting more than a small handful of developers to support SDKs for their devices, starting way back with the Edge. They simply don’t sell enough devices for developers to make modifications to their Apps to support them. It will be far worse with the Fold, since this is going to be a very niche low volume seller.

It didn't need a major design. Close up some gaps in the fold and put the screen saver cover under the bezel. And your last statement is just plain false. Samsung phones are absolutely supported and their market share was 22 percent.

The quoted comment was referring to the Galaxy Fold being a low volume seller... not Samsung in general.

Yes... Samsung has 22% market share for their ENTIRE smartphone line.

But the smartphone industry is 1.5 billion units a year.

The Galaxy Fold will be lucky to be 0.00001% of the smartphone market. :p

Give it time to mature. It will get there. Most phones started with small screens to begin with even iPhone & Android.

From what little I've read (there isn't much info out on it yet), they basically hacked together some solutions to what they thought the problem was.

What's the confidence level that the fixes are going to work long-term? Given that they thought the product was ready-to-ship before, I'd say that Samsung has a lot to prove.

If I was going to buy one, I'd buy it from Costco or some other place with a liberal return policy and/or with a credit card that has break/loss protection and an extended warranty.
