interesting idea, curious in real world conditions, environments that are constantly changing etc. One thing I liked was the "up to 3" apps visible at a time. I like my iPad, but just like the desktop we are so restricted in splitting the screen. I Have a windows 10 machine as well now, and it seems incredibly smooth in carving up screen real estate with multiple apps running.

Anyhow interesting concept. 5 years from now, maybe the mobile phone and tablet become one... category killer?

It can potentially kills off tablet. Should not be difficult have it in 2 different sizes when unfolded.
Even now, tablet is declining because it is just too cumbersome to bring around. Now with foldable, you have your PHONE + TABLET in one.

I use Samsung DEX a lot and it is great for what it offers. A portable desktop experience without lugging along a desktop (or dedicated laptop). I just plug it to any TV/monitor and use. Dont even need to bring mouse or keyboard because the phone screen can act as mouse trackpad and big full screen keyboard.

You are not addressing my point and you are the 5 of 10mio. And what does it offer. Your scenario is an inconvenience to most rather than a valid use case. I’ll do my work on a purpose built device. I would feel crippled even having to switch from Mac to windows. What is dex doing exactly? Write a word document? Launch adobe photoshop? What exactly?

The sub 10inch tablet category is evidently dead

I wouldn’t buy this particular device for 3 main reasons:
1. Way too thick as a phone
2. Screen will be way too flimsy with the ultra thin glass/plastic
3. Odd aspect ratio on the tablet so content consumption will be horrible and no better than in a phablet

I'll be impressed when I actually do see a working device of an ultra-lightweight smartphone that's actually foldable and works.

Bingo. Nice tech demo but foldable displays have existed for ages. Putting together a tech demo of one is not 'delivering' anything.

Apple users will be carrying around their iPhone, iPad and/or MB/A/P with them.

To be fair i've always hated the idea of creating one device to do everything, there are always compromises. That's why I don't like the iPad replacing laptop - i prefer alternatives not replacements and dedicated devices that excel at what they want them to do. I'm happy to carry a bag with 2kg around in it thanks. I'll take the extra "exercise".

Why is it so difficult to understand?

I can open up the (bigger) screen to watch YT or video or show photos to others. Or I can work with cloud-based services/application via the browser in a bigger window. Or I can even draw with S-Pen. Almost anything you can do with your Ipad (without carrying and paying for another expensive tablet)

Same goes for DEX. Sometimes you just want a bigger screen to consume your apps in your phone without the trouble of maintain multiple -hardware

What Samsung presented is obviously a pre-production rough concept. It's not polished, it's thick, etc.

That being said, I LOVE the idea and, once ready for prime time, I will be a day-one customer. It will make watching videos, browsing the web, writing emails/docs, etc on the go much more pleasant in tablet-mode.

More screen real estate is always welcome, and that's precisely why smartphones morphed from their original 3.5" size to their current 6.5" (and growing!). The future Samsung foldable phone is the next breakthrough in that evolution.

Kudos to Samsung for exploring new territories!

Well to be fair, I don’t know one friend, associate or family member, who owns a samsung phone that thinks Dex is worth anything. YMMV. I’d like t know the adoption rate other than the gushing on tech forums.

I’ll take a way and see attitude with this foldable display but unless Jony Ive designed it, it won’t be thin enough.

Disregarding phones, if Samsung can get this technology out to market cheap och on a large scale, it could without a doubt skyrocket the company. The implementations for a foldable/flexible, very thin screen is practically endless in our modern world. Just think about your home or car.

So we are supposed to move from thin, beautiful, bezel free, big display phones to something like that. Good luck.

I guess the display is the big thing because the outside design couldn't have been much to show since the stage is totally dark and the siluett of the thing looked like it was from the 90's.

Airpower and wireless AirPods case.

Airpower, Homepod.
AirPower was shown in full, not teased in some partial reveal. They just haven’t yet been able to make it work.

HomePod was shown in full without some live action partial reveal, and was given a release date when it was introduced.

AirPod case with wireless charging is a nonexample. We all know what AirPods are, what they look like, and how they work because we already own them. There’s no “Ooooh what will this be??” by offering wireless charging of the case. Not yet delivering a product they (fully) show us isn’t the same thing as some coy live-action peek-a-boo intro.

Apple doesn’t do that. They do put out teaser print ads and promos, like every other company. But when they take the stage to show a new product, they, y’know, show it.

Over 400 comments and still no one can say when this will be an actual product for sale. The best people can do is but AirPower whataboutism.

I am 100% certain that Apple has DOZENS of foldable prototypes that have been in development for years, but their modus operandi is generally to not share anything until it’s totally ready for prime time. The only reason they aren’t announcing any such device now, or in the near future, is that it’s painfully obvious that the technology simply does not exist to make a compelling consumer device at this point in time.
I am very confident that Joni will cut it a full 0.0005” and add a butterfly keyboard before Apple claims victory

This is innovation that far exceeds the notch. Apple will adopt this in 2022-24 when Samsung minimized all the risks and people embrace the phone/tablet feature/function.

MR forum members will hate on this until Apple introduces something similar 4-6 years from now, and claim innovation.

Actually, that's exactly what we want Apple to do, as they're always done - wait until the technology is ready, don't sell beta hardware, let Samsung et al do that.

It's time to deliver, that was Samsung's tagline. And what exactly did they deliver? A device that looked like a box which seems to be foldable. Seen that before. I'm not at all impressed, it's more CGI together with some theatrical sounding orchestra playing in the background in this commercial and some people stating that this is all revolutionary.

I'll be impressed when I actually do see a working device of an ultra-lightweight smartphone that's actually foldable and works.

I'll be impressed when I see it's still working two years later.

Sniff sniff, is it jealousy I smell. Let’s be honest here, Apple will go to Samsung for this tech in 4-6 years.
Actually I think it's a joke you smell.

As a Samsung Galaxy S9+ owner and a Galaxy S8+ owner before that, I would much rather see Samsung focus on bringing their software update process on par with Apple instead of focusing on a folding smartphone.

I know several have commented that Apple will adopt this in several years and be considered “innovative”, but the truth is the future belongs to eliminating the need for a display, not folding it in half.

I’m still not seeing it. I don’t see myself being interested in such a product until years down the line when the tech is perfected. It doesn’t make sense to sacrifice power, battery life, apps, and software stability to have what is a essentially a gimmick right now. I think the tech is cool and it has to start somewhere, but I’m okay sitting this one out for a few years.

Phone/Tablet combination is rather appealing, couple that with USB-C and this can dock to accessories. One device to rule the business persons carry-on technology. Apple users will be carrying around their iPhone, iPad and/or MB/A/P with them.

Just to your information “innovation” means take something that already exists and make it better. Otherwise it would be to invent something as in creating something new.

Just saving a few screenshots so we can see how the tone changes on here when the iPhone XX introduces its revolutionary foldable technology.

Exactly. I can’t wait for Apple to release a functional, easy-to-use phone with this technology and a decent OS. That is what you meant, right?
