It’s a nice concept but what does it actually solve. People here usually have little understanding of tech and mistake gimmicks for innovation.

The majority of people don’t have a need to turn this thing into a tablet or phone. They want either or. It is complicated - I want a product designed for purpose. The idea behind the product is nothing else than what Microsoft has been trying to sell and no one cares about the Surface. It is an additional step for a scenario that isn’t popping up in every half an hour or so. Yes it’s will be convenient for those times where I can just change it to a big screen but if this is supposed to replace my phone, it Willi be folded most of the times.

Samsung advertising their current phone can be used as a PC is a similiar mistake. Great for the 5 people who will actually use it, not so great for the other 10m who have zero use for it but paid for it.

You do realize that Apple has been awarded plenty of patents for the same concept. Apple will likely not be the first because they understand that launching fast doesn’t mean anything if it’s half baked. Apparently other companies seem to be stuck with the hold concept of “being first to market” for the sake of being first to market.
No it's not that, Apple simply can't develop a foldable screen phone before Samsung no matter how much they try.
Samsung is in a unique position of being able to design, develop and manufacture the best mobile screens on the market. They've been working on this longer than any of their competitors(including Apple). This is why they are the first to launch a viable folding screen device.

Apple will come out with their version a few years down the line (probably using Samsung's own screen technology). Call it a new era in smartphones. Launch it as though its brand new technology, even though its not. Everyone will flock towards it. And that's when it will take off, thanks to not innovation by Apple, but by their marketing power.

That was pretty cringe-worthy as far as announcements. Nobody sounded interested at all, nor did they have any idea of when to clap and applaud because things seemed underwhelming.

As far as the foldable design, I think Samsung users will love it because it’s new and different. Personally, if Apple brought this out, I’d have no use for it, nor want it.

It’d have to do something new, better than a phone or a tablet already does (for it to be worthy of being useful imo) and it’s really doing both of those things poorer (battery life for phone, less screen than a decent sized tablet).

The dodgyness of the presentation (dimming the lights, hiding the actual design) seemed like it belonged at a magic act or something, quite devious.

Either way, I don’t think this thing will make waves for any other phone company; nothing to worry about.

It can potentially kills off tablet. Should not be difficult have it in 2 different sizes when unfolded.
Even now, tablet is declining because it is just too cumbersome to bring around. Now with foldable, you have your PHONE + TABLET in one.

I use Samsung DEX a lot and it is great for what it offers. A portable desktop experience without lugging along a desktop (or dedicated laptop). I just plug it to any TV/monitor and use. Dont even need to bring mouse or keyboard because the phone screen can act as mouse trackpad and big full screen keyboard.

A lot of people can't see the big picture here. 10 years from now, when sales are sluggish for all iOS devices because they all do the same thing, Apple will introduce the ultimate accessory to rule them all.

It folds around your arm like a bracelet, raise up your arm to get all the Watch OS functionality. Want to relax and read the news or watch a video? Take it off your wrist and unfold it to become a tablet. Phone calls will be done via the iShades/glasses or what ever the AirPods evolve into in 10 years. They will offer it in 2 sizes (slim or thick) and weight will depend if you want a hard drive and bigger battery in it or have everything in the cloud and make it lighter.

Perhaps because they don't stuff the auditorium with employees who know when to clap on cue like certain other companies?

Well it's because Samsung is doing it, that's all.
It's like with Night Sight which is a cool feature that just works and it's very well implemented/integrated in the camera app, a lot of apple fans(the usual suspects on this forum) were only trying to denigrate Google and their low light feature (trying to present it from any negative angle possible). The funny thing is most of them didn't even want to know how it works.
I never understand people that hate for no reason. I see it a ton with some of my friends towards apple devices. They just assume its crap then when they see me use it faster and better the anything they have they think im crazy.
If something is better everyone should embrace it no matter who releases it. I like tech in general all new things are interesting to me.

why do you think it's thick? you know the video of this foldable phone has a cover on it to hide its real shape an[doublepost=1541660327][/doublepost]
why do you hope it doesnt happen? thats like saying I hope I dont get new innovation because I as one person think its not worth anything.
Because as I said I prefer a solid sturdy non bendable screen. Why is it wrong that I have a different opinion than yours?

how do you know you dont prefer something you've never used? I mean all I know is a solid phone which I like but Im open to new technology. I also liked my flip phones... My pager was pretty cool back in the 90's too.
Also, not everything is for everyone. Some people will like this some wont.

If its very durable and can survive being bent thousands/millions of times then this is very cool tech to look forward to.

Can't wait to have my phone break in half, just like old paper books.

Your stats don't add up, there are more Apple apologists here than anything else.
You just don't like negative comments when Apple makes bad moves. Just don't take it to heart. You'll live longer that way without the unnecessary stress.

I know a lot of the negative comments come from Apple customers unhappy with the direction that Apple is taking. Doesn't mean they don't love the products. A lot of people conflate both of these aspects as being the same thing.

Were you happy when they removed ports, soldered in ram/ssd, didn't bring out new mac products for years, canned Aperture, took all the features out of final cut when they re-wrote it, the list of moves that annoys customers is a mile long. You might be happy apologizing for all these bad moves, I prefer to complain. Does that mean the products are bad, no, but it does annoy the hell out of your workflow.

Lets see how many likes this post gets...

I’m an Apple fan because they do things right

I was more commenting on your assumption that apple fans like stuff when Apple does it just because Apple does it. Where Apple tends to do things late but better than others, and I think that’s what fans like. Do it right the first time.

Soldering RAM annoyed me. Ports not so much. Because I see the long term goal.

Apple will take longer than anyone else and MR members will complain. Then it will come out and MR members will complain.

I would love an iPhone that’s the size of the XS Max when folded and then it unfolds twice to be the size of a 9.7 iPad.

However I would hate to see what Apple would charge for a device like this. £3000? Lol

Wait a minute. You have, say, a 6.5" phone screen that unfolds to what, a square double-phone? But that's not a tablet in its functional sense. So what is it? I don't care if Apple will release it's foldable phone-tablet in 2025 as long as it's more like the device we've seen in Westworld.
