Samsung did said it is launching in the coming months.

If they were to, why then make a tech announcement now? It would be great for the tech world to have this device see the light of day soon, but I doubt an imminent release.

Well, my comment still stands. It is thick.
But your premise doesn't.

Code-m. Are you just going to berate all MR folks for the rest of this post or are you going to offer something constructive to the conversation?
Pot, Kettle, Black?

They are sounding more and more like jilted lovers with each passing day.
Or it might just be that most of them are customers who love Apple products but hate the company for all the bad moves they make.

Who would ever want a foldable phone which would Ibe double thick in your pocket.
Have you never heard of a flip phone? You must be young :D

Sniff sniff, is it jealousy I smell. Let’s be honest here, Apple will go to Samsung for this tech in 4-6 years.

Lol, like anybody but a brainwashed Samdung fan thinks an iOS user is jealous of the garbage Sammy craps on the public. This foldable junk is a gimmick looking for a use case. Oooooooh, it folds <gasp!> BFD. People will be over that parlor trick ten minutes after they realize they have a fat, ugly brick they don't know where to put. You're right about one thing, ... I'll wait for the product Apple releases a few years later when the tech has matured and is designed into something that people might actually want to carry around.

I am 100% certain that Apple has DOZENS of foldable prototypes that have been in development for years, but their modus operandi is generally to not share anything until it’s totally ready for prime time. The only reason they aren’t announcing any such device now, or in the near future, is that it’s painfully obvious that the technology simply does not exist to make a compelling consumer device at this point in time.
Apple has never made a screen and you've jumped to "I am 100% certain that Apple has DOZENS of fold-able prototypes that have been in development for years"?

You mustn’t know MR forum members well. Most of them seem to hate Apple. And I have no idea why they’re here...
Your stats don't add up, there are more Apple apologists here than anything else.
You just don't like negative comments when Apple makes bad moves. Just don't take it to heart. You'll live longer that way without the unnecessary stress.

I know a lot of the negative comments come from Apple customers unhappy with the direction that Apple is taking. Doesn't mean they don't love the products. A lot of people conflate both of these aspects as being the same thing.

Were you happy when they removed ports, soldered in ram/ssd, didn't bring out new mac products for years, canned Aperture, took all the features out of final cut when they re-wrote it, the list of moves that annoys customers is a mile long. You might be happy apologizing for all these bad moves, I prefer to complain. Does that mean the products are bad, no, but it does annoy the hell out of your workflow.

Lets see how many likes this post gets...

They did show the foldable screen design. They also showed the multitasking capabilities and other tech.

Of course, they have to leave the actual device details for the actual launch for the excitement. You don't see apple shows all the details of products at the developer events, do you?

Are you saying you wouldn't like a foldable phone? I would love one.
We will have to wait and see because this is not the final thickness.
Why all the anger?

Can you remind me of the release date for Apples wireless charger? It was announced last year or something wasn't it?
Also what is the release date for the new mac pro they announced?

Bar some notable exceptions (most prominently AirPower), Apple has never publicly unveiled groundbreaking tech not fully integrated in a marketable device with an imminent launch. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
My point is, wouldn't the excitement be much greater if Samsung unveiled the device and announced it's available a few weeks from then (cf. every iPhone launch)? Now I'm much more likely to forget about the existence of this tech until it's released at some point.

The best comment I've seen under the twitter post of this phones debut...
"This is like revolution in the mobile design. SDC18 when SamsungMobileUS coming up with new revolutinary innovations, what are you doing Apple ? Creating more dongles?"

It looks kinda small in the "phone" mode... and as a "tablet" it's kinda small too.

I see what they're going for here... but it seems like they went too small in both modes. I guess we'll have to wait for hands-on experience.

My general take: Are there times I wish I had a larger screen on my phone? Sure. But I'm not certain I'd want to carry around a double-thickness device when I don't need a larger screen. (which would be most of the time)

I realize this is a prototype. But they also said they had to disguise its design elements. So it sounds like this package is pretty close to finalized, right?

Otherwise... why bother disguising something if it's gonna look completely different in the end?

It's obviously in some kind of case. But notice how the screen is flush with the edges when closed... and also flush with the edges when open.

To me it looks like this is the thickness of it.

Again... I know it's a prototype. And it's difficult to make a judgement from a couple of still images and a few seconds of (dark) video.

But here's what I see: A too-small phone that turns into a too-small tablet which will be twice as thick as any device you'd normally carry. :p

Still though... they're doing something different. I'm interested in seeing version 2 or 3 after it goes on a diet. :)

A foldable screen in a non-vaporware is not exciting enough?

4.6 and 7.2? I think thats what they said. It does look thinner then normal so must be tall to make it that size.

Innovations come in many forms. But aside that, isn't Apple already investing in the supposedly next-generation screens? MicroLED? To my understanding, Apple even made deals with some manufactories in order to develop these new type of screens. But I might be mistaken.

Hard to tell what they are planning, when they call a normal LCD as "liquid retina"...

Ah thanks... I didn't know the closed screen size. So a little bit smaller than iPhone 8 screen size (not Plus)

That's not too bad then. I think it must have been the angle in the photos that was throwing me.

What will be odd is a 7.2" screen in a square form-factor. I wonder how that compares to a 6" rectangular phone screen?

For instance... how big will a normal 16x9 YouTube video be on this device when opened. There's gonna be some hella letterboxing! :p

I think it will feel like a mini laptop from the looks of it. It has a lot of possibilities im curious about.

It's interesting, but it's not on sale.

Both screens look small for their particular purpose. I will be very impressed if Samsung have found a way to fold the device in half and not double whatever thickness it has.

And they are at least 2 years behind Samsung here.

watch the video. 40% reduction in screen technology.

Yea I really dont get the hatred for innovation. Some could call me an apple fanboy ive always liked their stuff ive had each iPhone back to the 3g. White plastic MacBook, two MacBook Pros, two appletv's, 3 different apple watches, 3 different iPads and still I like to see new technology no matter who it is.
Seems like people are ok with small updates since 2015 and new technology they think is pointless and dumb. Without other companies innovating apple wont be pushed to release anything besides small updates year after year. I think its good for all to want new technology no matter who is releasing it because it will push the market to new things.
I never understood the super fanboy apple people that cant be open minded to new tech...
Well it's because Samsung is doing it, that's all.
It's like with Night Sight which is a cool feature that just works and it's very well implemented/integrated in the camera app, a lot of apple fans(the usual suspects on this forum) were only trying to denigrate Google and their low light feature (trying to present it from any negative angle possible). The funny thing is most of them didn't even want to know how it works.
