It was no variable offering 60 or 120. Then months later they offered some variation if selected but forced lower resolutions. Nothing like the 10-120 variable rates with auto selection based on use case and even the speed of finger swipes Apple released today. Samsung basically knew Apple was working on 120 because they supplied the test screens and rumors said it was coming last year, so they rushed to beat them to the punch as usual. This response was planned for months. They knew they had the screens but could not fathom how their implementation would blow them to kingdom come v
Tweet says nothing about them having the variable aspect. Just on having 120hz, which is true.

It was an underwhelming Apple event...Samsung's marketing team is whack, no need to respond.

I switch between Apple and Android depending on which one Is the best for my needs....at this moment in time, I have the Galaxy Fold 3 which is exceptional...

May switch to the iPhone 14 eventually if the leaked renders are true...

i think you’ll switch when the number of supported folds/opens has been reached and that thin foldable sheet of glass begins to have micro-cracks/shatters.

honestly great looking phone you have, but real world it’s a chunky bet by Samsung. I honestly believe the Fold will die when the Note returns with rollable screen like this artist concept. I honestly think Apple may do this in Agee years when the tech matures.

Have they been refreshing at 120hz solid, or have they been refreshing with variable refresh rate going down to 10hz?
Samsung is so trashy, jeez.

Samsung can go all the way down to 1 Hz which allows energy efficient always on displays. Apple’s variability without always on display is a pointless gimmick. They saved a bit of money now with a cheaper screen so they can add it next year.

I'll just leave this here...Android phones with 120Hz OLED display:

Asus ROG Phone II
Oppo Find X2/Pro
Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+/S20 Ultra
OnePlus 8 Pro
Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra
OnePlus 8T
Samsung Galaxy S20 FE
Samsung Galaxy S21/S21+/S21 Ultra
Vivo X60/Pro
Xiaomi Mi 11/Pro/Ultra
OnePlus 9/Pro
Oppo Find X3/Pro
Samsung Galaxy A52
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2/3

I have the Fold 3 as well. Sold my 12 Pro Max and gave my wife my 5th Gen Mini. Absolutely no regrets. I feel sorry for anyone who uses a Mini sized tablet and iPhone on a regular basis that doesn't have the stones to make the switch and try this phone out. It is insanely great.

As usual Apple prefers to be best rather than first. I bet the battery optimization and the way it works will be better than the Samsung version.
Apple uses Samsung technology for ProMotion display. It can't be better than what Samsung has. Samsung has the right to brag. Apple is probably the last smart phone vendor out there to implement 120Hz display.

BS! ProMotion is custom technology that Apple started to use years before Samsung has anything similar. Samsung manufacturing Apple displays does not mean that Apple relies on Samsung for everything on the display technology. This is factually nonsense. Apple introduced ProMotion in 2017 on the iPad Pro which means that it has deployed the technology for more than 4 years on a mobile device that sold by millions. It makes no sense whatsoever to say that Apple is late in a technology that it has been deploying for years. Apple just chose not to deploy it so far on the iPhone for reasons we don't know.

We’ve been refreshing at 120Hz for a while now...

Yeah dumb ass, we are refreshing at 120HZ too but since 2017.....

Apple is using Samsung LTPO panels. They’re the same. It’s just Samsung marketing shenanigans. BTS, Samsung and Apple are partners.

IMO what Samsung should’ve done is flexing and tweet “thank you Apple, hope you like our panels.”

Second to the original manufacturer. The other Android OEMs are using IPS or cheaper lower tier OLED panels.

Promotion on iPads are IPS. iPhones use OLED. Different tech. Promotion is just Apple’s marketing term. Apple was waiting for Samsung LTPO panels to mature and in volume, and Samsung demoed it with the S21 ultra.

Do Samsung displays vary between 10 Hz and 120 Hz?
Yes. That’s the whole point of these new LTPO panels. The S21 Ultra has variable refresh rates down to 10Hz. Gee, seems the same as Apple’s marketing. :D

Samsung and LG are supposedly supplying Apple the OLED displays for the iPhone 13. In a sense, Samsung is indirectly taking a jab at themselves for the unknowing consumer.
It’s just Samsung marketing shenanigans. They’re aggressive, but not too delicate in delivery. Besides, these companies are partners in reality. Tweets are just there to rile up the fanboys of both sides.

Getting to 120Hz refresh rate for OLED required special tech (LTPO panels). Those were developed by Samsung and this is what Apple is using.

It can absolutely be better.

iOS has color management, Android has a poor implementation that doesn’t work right. It’s why iPhones can display multiple color profiles at once on the same screen while Samsung can’t. Samsung still has “modes” like Vivid, for crying out loud.

The GPU and display driver portion of the SoC is also important. Apple made specific mention of the updated display engine in the A15.

Finally there’s the software. Samsung’s high refresh rate isn’t perfect. There have been lots of complaints with stuttering or scrolling issues with various Apps. I doubt we’re going to see those issues with the iPhone.

There are good reasons for waiting on new technology before implementing it. We all remember how utterly useless the Motorola Atrix fingerprint sensor was. TouchID was substantially better in every way from day one.

Not correct. For example. Asus ROG Phone 5 uses 144Hz OLED panels manufactured by Samsung.
For the full (long) list of smartphones with 120Hz screens check this Wikipedia article. All phones using AMOLED panels use Samsung panels.

The keyword is variable refresh rate, which is what Apple uses (and also the S21 ultra). Correct me if I’m wrong, but check those other phones, including that Asus ROG 5. All they can do is software workaround to adjust the refresh rate to specific rates (eg. 60, 120, 144). The tech in S21 ultra and iPhone 13 Pro is variable, not fixed rates, where the refresh rate can be dialed down to as low as 10Hz.

This is the tech that Apple was waiting for. Even Samsung took a while to do it, with an early version on the S20 ultra, and the finalized version on the S21 ultra. The other Android OEMs are using fixed rates, older tech.

Variable refresh rate in smartphones is still a rarity indeed. But other manufacturers do have it too. Here is the list of phones that have it.

yes, samsung has done 120hz for some time now; but it was:

- not really working very smoothly, because it wasn't adaptive (like in the beginning of the s21u iirc)
- battery sucking (esp. on devices sold in the exynos markets)
- and limited to fullhd-resolution, running at a lower than the screen's native resolution, because of heat and battery concerns.

to summ it up: like a couple of times before in the past, samsung has won the "first"-, but not the "best"-award when it came to costumer experience/satisfaction.

Following the launch of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max earlier today, which features ProMotion displays with a variable 120Hz refresh rate, Samsung has come out in an apparent jab to Apple for being late to join the wider industry in adopting higher refresh displays.

In a tweet as the Apple event was underway earlier today, the official Samsung Mobile account tweeted "We’ve been refreshing at 120Hz for a while now..." While Apple has been widely rumored to adopt ProMotion in its iPhone over the past few years, Samsung has only just recently adopted a 120Hz refresh rate.

The first flagship Samsung smartphone to adopt a 120Hz refresh rate was the Galaxy S20, released in March of 2020, meaning Samsung may be slightly exaggerating the timeline in its tweet.

The ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max, alongside the ‌iPhone 13‌ and ‌iPhone 13‌ mini, feature smaller notches, faster performance, and improved cameras. Catch up on all the announcements from Apple's event today right here on our website.

Guaranteed that Apple will sell even more iPhones due to Samsung’s marketing. They are so insecure that they don’t even realize they are alerting their own customers who were just waiting for another reason to leave Samsung for Apple.

Wasn’t the 120hz introduced by Samsung on S20 working only on FHD resolution and not on the full resolution?

EDIT:
Yeah, it was limited to 120hz on FHD and 60hz for 1440p.

So you had to choose between a smooth or crispy display.
