Samsung are about to release their 4th updated iteration of their Galaxy Flip and Fold lines which keeps improving, and Apple have yet to release or even announce the 1st version of their own foldable. Come on Apple, stop dilly dallying and release your own version, your getting left behind in terms of innovation and it does not look good!

So I ended up with a Galaxy Flip 3 from a family member who won it 😂. My thoughts (for those who may be considering switching when Samsung reveals the 4th gen):
- the folding screen is a gimmick, you basically get a normal sized phone that is shorter but thicker in your pocket. Need to quickly get a photo? This phone is 1 step more complicated. The Fold would be much more useful.
- the cover screen is essentially useless. There are widgets but for example the timer one lets you start the previously-set timer. Want to change it? Open the phone. Want to read a bit more of a notification? Open the phone. It even activated in my pocket with nothing else, playing music 😂.
- as others have remarked, the phone is too tall. For my hands it’s mostly OK but still.

Apple doesn't have the luxury of being truly innovative because no one accepts the teething pains of really innovative things when it comes to Apple products. Any small issue is turned into an overly dramatic #somethinggate. That is why Apple generally waits until technology is mature before incorporating it. People claim they want innovation from Apple when the truth is they want reliability, but you don't get first-to-market innovation AND reliability.

For example, most people who buy the Samsung Fold accept there will be a crease or line, but they would never accept that if they bought a the same thing from Apple so Apple has to wait until they solve that issue.

TL-DR - Samsung can release the Fold-1; Apple has to release the Fold-5.

there is always one dumba-- who
states stupid crap. I have two galaxy z folds and I love them. I upgrade from 2 to 3. I would never go back.

the iphone are good device but nothing compared to z fold. one person states that it was a gimmick. well this gimmick works great. I don't need to carry a stupid laptop where every I go. unlike iPhone, I can window run all my apps on the big screen or use dex. what can you do?

I can run Linux or I can run limbo with windows vm.

again what can you do? beside Facebook and social media crap. I can get real work done without a laptop. again I was an apple certified tech and I know apple bs that they tell world and you guys like the sheep believe it.

well keep on believing and I will get real work....

…and yet when Apple release one, you (like everyone else on here) will be drooling over it and shouting “Take my money!”

Have you actually used one before, why do you think they a gimmick? I spent some time with it and they are pretty good devices, apart from that crease. If they can solve that, they’d be great.

I tried the Fold 3 - found it too thick and the smaller screen offset not to my liking. Center the smaller screen and make it thinner. I did like the phone to mini tablet functionality. The S Pen works on it. Pretty cool.

Wife bought the Flip 3 and loves it. Has had no issues. Her only comment was the small screen should be a bit bigger.

Be good to see what Sam is up to this round.

You know, sometime ago it was said that apple users are genuinely happy with their devices and not concerned with samsung/android devices or their users. I'd say this notion was either disingenuous to begin with or has changed because most of these comments say everything but "apple users are genuinely happy with their devices and not concerned with samsung/android devices or their users."

Understand the frustation But apple won’t add it until there’s no crease and get the Dependability and get the right volume

If Apple ever does it’ll be later. Having used the flip 3, after getting over the cool aspect it’s the same thing as any other phone and battery life sucked. The flip is only innovative because it folds but that doesn’t really do anything useful other than make a cool tech demo. The fold may have more promise but the flip is pretty meh imo.

Yeah see I tried that but you basically have to shove your face close to the phone to see whats happening because at that point the screen is half the size it would be on a slab phone that you’re holding in your hands. All the more power to you if that’s useful to you but to me I’d rather just use a different device if I’m sitting down to have a video chat.

Knocking things before trying it, weird. I guess PiP video on iPhone is unwatchable or even on a tablet.

I find it interesting that they still market it as new, despite it being their 4th generation.
It’s a new product or a new model, no harm, it’s marketing and Apple does the same remember “The New iPad”.

My wife uses hers for video and generally has it about 2 ft or so from what I have seen.
Seems to do okay with it.

She mostly got it for the size as it fits in her pockets and work jacket better than her previous Galaxy.
Works for her. Not something I would use.

I literally said I tried it in the comment you’re quoting 🤡
You tried a new unreleased product that is the topic of discussion, got it 🤡

One folding phone is similar to all others just like a slab iPhone is similar to a slab Samsung, Google slab phone.

Nope, I don't think so. I don't like the thickness of the folded devices, and I use my phone on a bike so a folding phone would not work well IMO, in terms of specialty cases and mounts that I use.

As long as they keep offering normal style phones, the folded ones can be for the "I must have it" sheep.

What was that thing about phablets some years or so ago?

Apart from phablets, there really hasn’t been another product category that can be credited to Samsung.

I would personally file the folding phone concept closer to curved screens (design trends which haven’t taken off) than larger screens.

Isn’t Apple rumoured to be working on a folding and/or rolling screen iPhone or another type of product. The question is whether it sees the light of day for mass public sale, only time will tell. Never say never.

I get that, but what happened to Steve Jobs Wayne Gretsky puck quote “Skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.” At this moment in time with phones, Samsung are moving to where the Puck is going, not Apple.

No one is buying them?

Samsung sold 7 million in total last year and looking to double that this year. I understand, this is an Apple forum… but at least be realistic. Samsung have set up their lineup to indicate how serious they are about foldables.

They pushed the Note out of their lineup and replaced it with foldables… Selling S-series in the 1st quarter and foldables in the 3rd quarter.

I may have been living under a rock but last I heard they were expensive, had manufacturing issues, the screen tears and most people do not find a use for it, its not small enough to be a phone and not large enough to be a tablet. If truth is otherwise I do not know.
