Curse you Magsafe adapter!

Cant seem to stop thinking that this among other news regarding Samsung is going to hurt the end users in the long run. I want the best display damn it!

re: Samsung plasma TVs

I suppose this gets a bit off topic, but for what it's worth? I've found Samsung "guts" in quite a few other plasma TVs on the market. (My old 50" Phillips branded TV had pretty much all Samsung internals when I opened it up, save for a lone audio board with the Phillips logo stamped on it.)

I get the idea that there are really only a few "engines" out there to drive plasma TV displays, and Samsung is (was?) one of the largest manufacturers of those circuit boards.

At the same time, the current 58" Samsung plasma TV I own had its screen crack, internally, after less than 6 months of ownership. It became a HUGE problem trying to get it repaired under warranty, because everyone tried to claim the screens only crack if you throw something at the TV or it falls on the floor. With a little research, I found *hundreds* of people with the same issue though -- which often appeared to be caused by how thin Samsung made everything. In the quest to put everything in a thin, sleek enclosure, they made the internal glass so thin - it was developing stress fractures from thermal expansion/contraction.

It took a report and investigation by the attorney general in Samsung Corp.'s home state in the U.S. to get them to start admitting wrong ... and even then, I still got stuck covering $375 or so in labor costs for a local TV shop to do the panel swap with a replacement panel Samsung supplied as warranty.

Not sure I'd buy one again after that whole fiasco.....

Panasonic only makes good plasma. For now I prefer plasma myself, but I have actually chosen a Samsung plasma over Panny. Sammy has better color reproduction and overall better balanced TV. The best TV I've ever seen though is Samsung OLED ES9500. Both plasma and LCD technologies are on they way out, but nether Sharp or Panasonic come even close to make OLED.

HP monitors are made by Chi Mei. Enjoy those :)

Get over it. Apple is the Ferrari of consumer electronics.

Do you really think that Ferrari owners use Huawei phones? That they buy their tablet computers from behind the counter at Walgreens?

No. They own Apple products.

iPhone = Toyota Corolla: a decent car, tons of people have one.
Samsung Galaxy S = Hyundai i30: a decent car, tons of people have one.

I think there isn't any Ferrari-smartphone yet, but if it existed, only a few people would own one, it should cost a lot and have some extravagant premium features, something like having retina display, integrated Wacom intuos pen, hexa-core plenty of storage and RAM, carbon-fiber body or another premium material and a projector beam. All from just $3999,00.

So what you're saying is - you're really scared about the new iPhone 5 because of Apple's quest for thinness? ;)

Even if it is true, the end result for Apple customers is just the same - inferior displays in the future products.

Incorrect. The typical material decisions for advances in consumer electronics are 18-24 months in advance of release time.

In short, the tech coming out is improving upon anything presently available from Samsung. Even Samsung hits ceilings with its current LCD tech and will have to switch over to compete with LG, Sharp and others to stay a leader in this space.

As far back as April 2012 Sharp is punching out bulk IGZO panels for the following sizes:

Sharp today said it was making available 32in, 3840 x 2160 panels - that's 140 dots per inch - for monitors, plus 10in, 2560 x 1600 (300dpi) and 7in, 1280 x 800 (217dpi) for tablets

http://www.reghardware.com/2012/04/13/sharp_begins_production_of_igzo_retina_display_tech/

And after 6 months we get the announcement that Samsung isn't extending future contract discounts to Apple.

Big deal. Samsung knows its present tech cannot compete with SHARP IGZO. Back to the drawing board for Samsung.

Given that Samsung displays and drives going into Apple products now seem to be working better than the alternatives, this is bad for Apple customers most of all, but definitely bad for Samsung too.

You talking about technology products that 5 years ago were vapor. Sorry, but the deal is simply put: Apple and Samsung are becoming ubiquitous as Honda in the States, but the to say either one is a Corolla or Hyundai is an insult to car analogists and their obsessive need to abuse themselves by such bad analogies.

If automobiles were as satisfying to loyalists of both phones we'd have autos humming along with 1 million mile/3 million kilometer engine designs that were all electric designs equivalent to V-10 in power and 150mpg equivalent in efficiency.

As a Mechanical Engineer I wish people would stop using Automobile analogies. They continue to get worse with each release of updates in the world of IT.

Oh, I did not imply that future products will be worse than the current ones (although even this is possible). But they will definitely be inferior to devices from other manufacturers that use Samsung components. Sharp is actually on the verge of bankruptcy. LG is not but they are not at the same quality level as Samsung.

I'm pretty sure the Vertu Constellation Ferrari edition, with leather trim, special coating used in the Ferrari engines and all proper licensing and logos indicating it's a genuine Ferrari merchandising deal qualifies :

Vertu-Constellation-Quest-Ferrari-2.jpg

It's a few K$ per handsets (I think their lowest end model is around 7999$, not 4k$) and they are really rare on the market (just Vertu phones themselves, so the unit count on that particular model must be atrociously low).

And their "extravagant" features are tech specs. Quite the contrary, the phones are usually in the dark ages of specs for smartphones. No, there's only 1 extravagant feature that's worth paying for with these phones : Concierge service.

KnightWRX - the phone you posted has a keyboard. Clearly they are all talking about full screen touch phones ;)

Oh come on, you all know that Samsung makes great displays. Those LG retina displays being churned out for the 15" rMBP have image retention issues whereas those made by Samsung do not.

Doesn't hurt Apple?? Seriously??

Yeah except Samsung now doesn't get all of the money for the displays that they give to apple. Will people still buy MacBooks? Of course. So it won't affect Apple that much, while Samsung loses all of that profit.

Apple contributes 4-8% of samsung's annual profit. Not all of that is display but from A4/A5/A6, RAM, battery, display.

What? You think since Apple isn't buying screens that it's just money lost? You know they can sell screens to other people right? And that Apple usually locks up a ton of supply (and at bargain rates). I'm not saying Samsung will sell the same amount - but there's a good chance it can - and with a greater profit.

Samsung makes better screens than LG. So I guess it's a loss for Apple.

most people don't even know (or care) who make screens for their smartphones... all they care is that it that it's good.

So the real question is can LG and others make good enough screens to satisfy the quality that Apple needs.

Karma - I guess this is what happens when you rip off (not remix) other peoples work.

I liked my 2010 40" Samsung TV but I don't anymore it's up for sale...or dumping, I just want it gone, it's white wood like grain design was just a ripoff of an Apple Cinema display from 2004 which is why I liked it in the first place.

I won't touch another Samsung product in my lifetime.

I'd like to see Sony come back as a real competitor to Apple, they like Apple innovate.

Karma - I guess this is what happens when you rip off (not remix) other peoples work.

You realize that the contract ended (as contracts do) and both parties didn't agree on new terms? Samsung wanted more for their parts. Apple wasn't willing to pay more for Samsung's parts. So they are parting ways.

This has nothing to do with Karma, stealing, copying, etc.
