I'd like to see Sony come back as a real competitor to Apple, they like Apple innovate.

The competition will come from China. If a product can be profitably copied, it will be...

the only things that are hard to copy are established ecosystems (Android, iOS/Appstore) and established services (Google's search engine).

Samsung makes some of the best OEM parts in the world.

Apple product reliability has been getting poor and its about to get even worse.

Toshiba and LG arent even in the same league.

In the end this is probably hurting Samsung more than Apple
Maybe..... I think this is again Apples arrogance which will come back to bite them in the end. If LG can't keep up or has a failure rate too high, Apple is SCREWED.

This is not good. Samsung screens are much better than LG and sharp displays.

Hope LG and sharp steps up their game.

So, what are the chances that MBP 13" retina and iPad Mini will have Samsung LCD panels?

I don't really think its going to be that big of a deal. Some people do describe issues with LG screens. Heck, a family member of mine had their 60" LG HDTV go bust within 3 years.

But Sharp has been making great screens. Look at the iPhone 5 screen for example, arguably the best mobile screen ever created. While Samsung makes great screens, I don't think that they're irreplaceable. Not to mention, it never did quite make sense to me how Samsung could be both a competitor and a supplier for Apple...

Can someone explain to me how samsungs screens are better? Where is the test data for this? I'm my non-scientific test the LG had better dynamic range and more accurate color.

Thanks.

Apple contributes 4-8% of samsung's annual profit. Not all of that is display but from A4/A5/A6, RAM, battery, display.

Yeah but I would take even .5% of billions of dollars anyday. 4-8% seems like nothing, but when it's billions? That's a lot of lost profit.

Just google Samsung LG apple screens and you will see more posts blaming LG being of inferior quality.

And samsung just seems better at executing well.

It's not like samsung can't resell the parts to others.

I get the idea that there are really only a few "engines" out there to drive plasma TV displays, and Samsung is (was?) one of the largest manufacturers of those circuit boards.

Not really an exception in the LCD world either.

In the end there are only a limited amount of suppliers of Panels. a lot of brands out there buy their panels from the big guys, package em how they want and sell them as their own.

For example: Best Buy's internal brand insignia are really panels made by other companies. I picked up a 'knock off' insignia LCD 42" TV for dirt cheap. it was easily 1/2 the price of Samsung's and LG's competing TV at the same price and nearly identical spec's.

did some snooping around.

It was Samsung's panel and driving tech in an insignia case.

it wouldn't surprise me just how many other brands all come back to the same half dozen or so panel makers in the end

The Power Mac. You know, that really slow computer Apple marketing called 'The Power Mac'! Yes Apple really have been lieing to us for decades now.

Apple had no choice but to stop development on their own CPU because they could not keep up with the competition. Every Mac user was happy to see them switch intel.

Apple did not develop that CPU. It was a joint effort of IBM, Motorola and Apple. Most of the development was done by IBM. Many Mac users at the time were not happy and some still aren't (See the PowerPC forums of this web site).

What? You think since Apple isn't buying screens that it's just money lost? You know they can sell screens to other people right? And that Apple usually locks up a ton of supply (and at bargain rates). I'm not saying Samsung will sell the same amount - but there's a good chance it can - and with a greater profit.
Apple sells hundreds of millions of devices each year. Not many companies can match that type of demand. Which equals a big loss for Samsung, no doubt.

Samsung Display is a spun-off entity separated from Samsung that makes phones and electronic components such as chips and SSDs, a small fact everyone in this thread seems to ignore. Again, the bias runs strong for anti-Apple crowd but they keep accusing the pro-Apple crowd for bias. ;)

And how much longer do you think that relationship will last?

I remember reading there are only 2 significant panel (used for lcd screen) makers, Samsung and sony.

This is definitely a good news. Sharp leads the LCD technology, followed by LG. Samesung is suck. Samesung even failed to solve screen burn-in issues on their crappy AMOLED.

Looking forward to future deteriorationship between these two companies.
Also excited for the liquidation of RIM, even though I look and feel mean saying it.

If Apple doesn't get enough $10 part, it cannot sell $600 iDevice. If Samsung cannot sell a $10 component to Apple, it can probably sell most or a lot of it to others, like Amazon.

Although Apple will not really run into shortage of parts, i do worry about quality of parts. Samsung has a proven track record of supplying parts. Not only to Apple but also Dell.
