Samsung is a large company. They have more than enough resources at their disposal to create great products, advertising etc. I dont understand why they are resorting to the "hey look at me" attitude.

... whiny wannabe underdogs.

Well, that perfectly describes Apple...

----------

If you have to directly reference the competition in your ads, you've already failed. I see it all the time in ads for such companies as Burger King, T-Mobile, and whomever is attacking Subway this week. The companies that are on top don't do this, only the also-rans. If you're product can't stand on its own merits, then I guess you resort to these tactics.

Well, Apple has done it in the past and they've done it in almost every keynote they ever held.

Wonder if you think/say this about Apple too. Probably not.

Yeah. Funny that :

hy·poc·ri·sy/hiˈpäkrisē/
Noun:
The practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense.

Mac vs PC is very much about Microsoft. References to Virus, ease of use, features, etc... It's obvious they're talking about Windows and the Microsoft OS running on PC hardware, not the actual PC hardware itself (which is not limited to running Windows).

Obvious is obvious, but MS's name was still never spoken or printed on the ad, and that's all I wanted to point out. Whether mentioning a company or brand name by print or verbally, if that has any increased psychological bearing on the viewer is just something to consider.

The funny thing about the Vista ad by Apple was that they took advantage of one of Microsoft's largest flops in history, critically and financially speaking. In the case of Samsung, they are trying to attack one of Apple's greatest achievements in history, and I think that's a huge difference between the tones of each company.

Is that definitely a Samsung ad, or is it an electronics retailer plugging Samsung products?

Who cares?

Does anybody actually care about this? I think it's hilarious that Samsung is specifically naming Apple in this ad. If anything, its just more advertising for Apple to ensure they keep dominating...no I mean decimating the competition.

For every 1 Galaxy Tab that this ad sells, it will sell 10 iPads.

The Mac vs PC ads worked because Apple could pander to the millions of frustrated PC users who were ready for a change. Apple, and the iPad by extension have a very loyal customer base, so the impact will be minimal at best.

People love their iPads, they don't care about a crappy Samsung knock-off. That's the story folks.

A lawsuit in Australia is one of their greatest achievements in history?

That was cute...

Now back to what matters, when is the iPad 3 coming up? I am all saved up and ready!

/facepalm

I agree with the referencing. It just makes their marketing effort seem desperate at this point.

This is why the Apple community is frustating.

"PC vs. MAC ads are so clever" only because they benifit Apple.

"Samsung ads are dumb and tastless" only because it markets against apple.

No matter how you swing it Samsung is the underdog in the market. Just because they are trying to market out their product at the benifit of a failed lawsuit doesn't mean it's bad.

The paid is not the first tablet, it's the first to make it popular. To say that ever company is copying the ipad is a cop out. How else would you design a tablet.

I have an iphone, a macbook pro and still found this ad amusing.

Depends on the minor details that get the Samsung name into households. Hearing about a company being sued by another company for copying, then counter suing, products being banned, then unbanned..

Is that really good publicity, even if it does get Samsung into the household name?

If my friend goes to a new burger place and gets diarrhea, and tells me the source of what caused it, that's getting the burger place name into my household, but not for the right reasons..
.

Actully, I go to Chipotle all the time.

This "Chip" that Samsung have on their shoulder and the way they mock Apple in their recent adds isn't making me want to move away from Apple.

I'm finding them really irritating as a company at the moment.

No, they are dumbe because they are dumb. Apple will never reach this level Samsung just reached with this slogan.

Samsung thanks Apple for the free Marketing!

I'd say it's the other way around champ! Apples probably loving the free advertising Samsung is giving them.

The ad pretty much concedes that Apple is the benchmark to measure against.

Hmmm. Thanks for the reminder of the Apple mission statement. 140 million, eh? How many macs and PC's are we up to now? Multiples of that. Heck iPhones alone will exceed that this year on top of the Macs, iPads, and of course all the other branded devices. I am thinking we are closer to 1.5 Billion overall.

Real figures would be interesting indeed. It has to be hard on all those landfills!

Rocketman

remember that "Get a Mac" commercial where they bleep out Vista every time it is mentioned?

Did you feel that same resentment with the Mac vs PC ads? Which actually mocked a product? Where did Samsung even mock anything?

Well yea, I think it is a bit more clever, and dare I say a bit classier, if you can attack your opponent without calling them out specifically by name in an ad, sure. It's just like having a formal debate with another speaker and trying to avoid the biggest fallacy of all: losing your temper and swearing vehemently at your opponent. Hey but I understand the rules of debate don't apply to corporate marketing :)

But like others have pointed out in this thread, Apple has fallen victim to that same "name referencing" tactic though in the past, so yes, it has gone both ways.

From Apple's "Why Mac" page on their own site...

"It doesn’t get PC viruses.
A Mac isn’t susceptible to the thousands of viruses plaguing Windows-based computers. That’s thanks to built-in defenses in Mac OS X that keep you safe, without any work on your part."

Does that count as mentioning MS/Windows directly? Will you give up on your silly semantics battle that Apple is innocent when it comes to negative advertising?

Yes it is because of apple... they redesigned the case on ALL models of the samsung tab... And their own redesign Looks horrible. Guess thats what you get from sammy when you have to make a case of your own... Crap

Mmm, no, the only redesigned model is the German one

From other articles I've read: the Apple lawsuit has helped immensely with brand awareness of the Galaxy Tab.

It hasn't really improved their sales.
