This really seems like a waste of time for Samsung!

The market competition is really between Apple and Amazon!

However, Amazon does not stand a chance in Apple's "niche" market: as Apple has retail stores for customers to experience the product. Apple is also systematically forging ahead in the corporate, media, and education market place.

Samsung would do better to work with Amazon and produce an upgraded tablet system based on the Kindle.

The market is not only USA

the true purpose of all these lawsuits is not to bar samsung from selling a tablet, it's to slow them down.

Actually the true purpose is fulfilling legal requirements to defend trademarks nd design from all offenders regardless of degree. If Apple didn't fill these suits over this slight offense and in all countries, it could be viewed later as them not really caring and they could lose more blatant cases.

Even if they lose against Samsung on this they tried so they still get points for the effort

But the one on the video (also mentioned in my post but you removed in the quote) is definitely the current Slim version.

I think the USA version is the one that doesn't have logo.

Even so on the Amazon.co.uk link you mentioned:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Gal...Q5X6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1321474483&sr=8-2

if you look at the second video it also has no logo.

There's both kinds out there.

Which video? Can you tell me the length of it because I have watched four and all of them have logo. Have you seen that they have 24 hour clock, they have to be European version, not American

Looks even nicer, Apples stupid legal games have come back to bite them. Well done Samsung I didn't think your could improve perfection.

I do love my iPod to pieces... but for anyone questioning whether or not Samsung stole their tablet design from Apple... how can it be when Samsung had that same design for their own digital photo frame back in 2006?

http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/09/...res-pics-movies-music/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter

That and the fact that the iPad has a button and Samsung does not?

Samsung's digital picture frame is no iPad
http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2011/08/23/samsungs-digital-picture-frame-was-no-ipad/

There is NO samsung logo on current version (only on several PR shots), this practice goes as back as last year's failed Tab 7. Also it is quite funny that samsung alters products based on lost/potential lawsuits - but only for the markets where the lawsuits are/would be, just like SGS2 in US.

Amen. You would think that if Apple is suing your butt all over the globe, you'd just make some across the board changes and put an end to all this madness.

By the time they fight this out country by country (and in some countries can't even release the darned thing) they'll have lost a ton of money. It's not like the Galaxy tablets are exactly selling like hot cakes. For an Android tablet, the numbers are ok, but they're not selling iPad like numbers. If they sell a million of each model, they'll be doing well in a crowded market.

They'll have spent 10 times the R&D, advertising, production, and back end costs of the device in court before this is over with.

Grow up Samsung.

Then there are all the counter suits they want to throw up at Apple...

Now just wait till Apple finds a new supplier and ditches them. They'll be sorry when their balance sheet is black and blue.

It's very funny, it's the 3:13 long video.

It starts with a Samsung tablet showing the logo, but at the 2:03 mark it changes to logo-less one! (both with a 24 hour clock)

Then at the 2:15 mark the tablet with the logo returns, so you have to be quick.

All the while the lady's hand appears to be the same. Magic!

The strangest thing is that the logo-less tablet seems newer - it shows July -while the one with the logo is still set to June.

Really? It wasn't an iPad? My God, I never would have said that.

And the community design granted in Europe is not an iPad.

P.S. Daniel Eran Dilger, even worst than Fox News

Thanks, have you seen all the videos? Jurl, what a patience :p

Samsung speakers at side when in landscape? But my ears don't move to the top of my head and bottom of my chin when I want to use vertical! :D

This tablet is designed to be used in landscape most of the time

Not really, luckily the video preview snap on Amazon shows the logo-less one, so it had to be there in the video somewhere.

That said, the person doing the demo is not that hard to look at :)

It is unclear what, if any, other changes Samsung made to the device to address the court's view that Samsung had copied the iPad with its initial design.

The all-female German court never said that Samsung copied the iPad. They only said it was too similar to a Community Design drawing (which didn't even have a Home button)... a design that they ruled was valid even with its lack of detail, saying that simple designs should be protectable.

A male Dutch judge ruled the same design drawing was too generic and obvious.

The difference in how the decisions were made is interesting. The German court only relied on the fact that the Tab had the same surface visual elements as the Design drawing. E.g. rounded corners and flush front.

The Dutch court went deep into detail on why each element would be there from a utility standpoint, and was thus unprotectable. E.g. rounded corners because sharp ones hurt, and flush glass to prevent collecting dust in grooves.

In other words, the German court was all visually oriented, and the Dutch court was all about physical design thought processes.

And the visual aspect is very important in stores, when you consider non-techies looking at these things.

How do you expect first time non-tech buyers to know which of these two tablets is the one they saw before, their son/daughter asked for, etc?

IMHO this is exactly what Samsung is playing at, especially in markets where they don't even put their logo. There is no real technical reason to make them look so much alike.

I'm glad at least their German-specific model now has a clear difference..

Confused Parent: "Excuse me, Mr. Best Buy Employee? Which one of these is the iPad?"

Best Buy Employee: "DDDAAAARRRRRRRR I SELL DE TV FOR MONEYZ"

:hands confused parent Samsung Galaxy:

Christmas Day

Kid: "Well hell. This is a Samsung Galaxy. THIS IS NOT AN VERTICALLY INTEGRATED LIFE CHANGING DEVICE BUILT AROUND A SYNERGISTIC ECOSYSTEM THAT COMPLETELY REDEFINED A PARADIGM, MOM!"

Confused Parent: "You really are an ungrateful SOB, LTD. Here's the receipt, take it back and get your ipods or whatever. Merry freaking Christmas."

...and the world continues to turn.

What we appear to have here is a mutual failure to communicate. The original claim was that the current device does not have a Samsung logo on the front.

Rodimus Prime challenged that statement asking for proof.

Apparently you are not familiar with Rodimus Prime's standard MO on this forum. His comment history tells all.

Priceless!

Although if I were "Mom", I would have taken the Galaxy, given LTD a lump of coal, and taken the Galaxy back to Best Buy myself and then with the credit gone to Nordstrom's and bought some clothes and shoes.

Don't enable whiny brats....

Only you could spoil a good story.

Loved the OP's impression of a Best buy employee though.

I like Apple but I just think this is crazy stuff, I don't personally think that it looks that much like an iPad... The back of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is white with a silver bezel..

That must be the Polish model, where the back matters.

Here in the US we use and look at the front of the ipad.

Agreed. With all these people who love to say, "There's only so many ways to make a tablet look," I pose the question, "Where the f##k were they before the iPad?"

Trust me, I've had my hands on a couple Windows tablets from back in the day and they were nothing to be excited about. Pens with "buttons"... WOW!

Take a look at this:

If I were "mom", I'd probably keep it. I've gotten into this habit of reading tons of books on my iPhone recently. A habit which, I'm sure, is directly responsible for me suddenly needing glasses after all these years. A bigger screen would sorta help me out a bit.

...though I could use another reindeer sweater, too. Those things are expensive.

An impression that's about damn true. I went into Best Buy a few months back to buy HDMI cables, and I had one of their experts or whatever they're called try to sell me something like gold plated cables because, and I quote, "it lessens the static noise across the line and produces better picture quality". I mean hey, it only cost $30 more. I want the best, right?

I'm pretty sure the guy thought I was the idiot, because I stared at him slackjawed for about 5 minutes before walking away.

???????

The only way those are going to look different are if
1) black bezel changes
2) Silver rim disappears
Its retarded to suggest that these two things somehow make a device the same i.e. somone copied the other. Black and silver are becoming increasingly popular in laptops and phones and other electronic devices, replacing the ugly beige of the 80s and 90s.
Note: silver rim is similar, bezel is much thicker on the ipad.

Its a black rectangle with a screen!!!! How can you possibly make it look different. Look at the shape for crying out loud, its completely different with a different aspect ratio and bezel size.

The first thing people notice are shape and colour. Both tablets are rectangles and both are black. But all tablets have to be rectangles (a triangle or square tablet would be really weird) and black as a bezel colour makes sense as it makes the light from the screen stand out more. Plus black looks neat and clean (does not show dirt, scratches or smudges that well) and is becoming ever more popular. Pretty much every tablet has a black bezel.

This is Samsung's digital picture frame released in 2006.

It looks awfully similar to something....
So please, if you think that samsung copied apple's ipad please think again. They had products, which though different in function, look almost identical to their own tablets and, incidentally, the ipad. It could easily be argued in court that Samsung already had this design years before apple. It could be argued that apple is serving up a pile of BS. It could be argued that apple copied Samsung (admittedly from a different product though with a similar form factor). So please, do your research before posting, you never know what you might find.

That "tweaked" Galaxy Tab now just looks like pre iPhone 4 model.

And that is just the right ingredient for another sue from Apple
Oh poor Samsung, I wish you could've been better :p

Oh that's funny. Similar to what? Other picture frames surely.

The border isn't even metal, it's plastic. Look closer:

Want another shot? Maybe it'll look like metal now.

Maybe not. Now let's look at it's side:

Yep, looks like a picture frame. What else did you have in mind?

An iPad? Apple copied this? Really? HAHAHAHAH

Maybe it's you who needs to do more research. Ideally outside fandroid forums.

Um....no i was just saying how black rectangles look the same. An no, I am not an android fanboy (i don't have an android phone and never used android at all, i could not tell heads from tails on android). I am saying that that picture frame looks, from the front, very similar to a lot of the products on the market today. I'm saying that samsung did not copy apple, they had a device that looked (from the front) just like an ipad way before apple released the ipad. Samsung's tablet, which so many users on this forum complain samsung ripped off the ipad is almost identical to the front of samsung's digital picture frame. Therefore the samsung did not take apple's design.
