As mentioned before, The JooJoo Tablet. Saw public release in 2010, but the first prototype came out in 2008.

The iPad, really all tablets in general, following and proceeding, all share the same generic design. Know why? Because they're all basically little screens you hold in your hand. For comfort, they have to be thin, they have to be light, and they have to be easy to hold. Any other shape or form would make them too unwieldy. This limits variation, and why you won't see many differences among them even into the near future.

I think that Samsung painted themselves into a corner as soon as they copied the packaging materials and everything else wholesale. It got to be ridiculous.

I just found an image of the back of this thing..

Tough situation for Samsung.

There's only so many ways you can make a piece of glass look different.

You know, that's the kind of thinking that Samsung does. Why CAN'T you make a piece of glass look entirely different. Just because you can't think of it on the spot doesn't mean that it's not possible.

It's really funny looking at all these responses from ifans (read as iTards) here. One says "Samsung copies", next one says "they steal", and the sequence continues. They all agree with each other and feel great about the mutual agreement that they have. Great, you guys have a brotherhood. I see more Samsung-related news here rather than than actual Apple news. If Samsung makes so low grade product, why are you actually worried? If their products can't compete with Apple products, why bother talking about them?

I always wonder if Apple thinks anyone would ever mistake a Samsung product with Apple devices. If this is true, it goes to show the level of intelligence of such people.

Love your ID, macFanboi, did you think of it yourself?

They can't be this, they can't be that...
This is why Apple gets it when nobody else does.
They don't have limits only imagination.

The Japanese dismissed the iPhone at first because it wasn't tiny.
Now they love them.

It makes the device look bulkier without any increase in screen size. Design terms today are minimalistic stuff. That is why everyone copies Apple design because they get it just right.

There's minimilistic and there's boring. The original looks dull and uninteresting, the new version looks like something I'd put money down for. If there were no such thing as an iPad, of course. :p

So, basically, this is the one they are all copying?

Well, I'd say that pretty much sums it up. If this was prototyped in 2008, what is Apple/Samsung whining about?

well I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and an iPad, and I can tell you, it doesn't matter what the Galaxy Tab looks like, until it gets some kind of Hardware accelerated user interface it is a pile of unresponsive, laggy poop.

Seriously, the iPad beats it hands down in every single way. I cannot believe Samsung even think they are competing on the same playing field at the moment. It feels like the iPad is about 10 times faster (until you run a game that takes over and uses the hardware properly)

You know that exaggerating facts only makes them less credible, don't you?

iPad feels snappier but the Galaxy Tab is not the unresponsive, laggy thing you say

The iPad denier force is strong on this thread.

The is prototype B of the JooJoo tablet:

This is prototype C (April 2009):

crunchtablet-1.jpg

Any close resemblance to the iPad? No

Final version of the JooJoo tablet - end of 2009 (you know the one which got a whole 90 pre-orders in 2010)

cdba.jpg

Again looks nothing like an iPad.

It's possible - and natural - to make a tablet different from the iPad (screen, black border and thin metallic silver lining, and no one here as shown anything previously with those characteristics.

The Samsung photo frame is nothing like it (it had a white plastic border and was thick as a brick), the JooJoo pad is nothing like it.

However in it's first interaction Samsung choose make their tab look almost exactly like the iPad - and they even removed their logo in some markets to make the two even more similar.

The Galaxy Tab resembles more to Joojopad than to the iPad. In fact, the Galaxy Tab resembles more to the Apple community design than the iPad.

This really seems like a waste of time for Samsung!

The market competition is really between Apple and Amazon!

However, Amazon does not stand a chance in Apple's "niche" market: as Apple has retail stores for customers to experience the product. Apple is also systematically forging ahead in the corporate, media, and education market place.

Samsung would do better to work with Amazon and produce an upgraded tablet system based on the Kindle.

Amazon doesnt sell their product outside of the US. No wonder america is going to crap with thinking like yours.

Samsung speakers at side when in landscape? But my ears don't move to the top of my head and bottom of my chin when I want to use vertical! :D

Yeah, Apple cramming two speakers into the same corner so that you cant even hear the stereo effect is sooooo muuuuch beeetteeeer.

ipad stereo - so good you cant believe its not mono. magic mono!

----------

And the visual aspect is very important in stores, when you consider non-techies looking at these things.

How do you expect first time non-tech buyers to know which of these two tablets is the one they saw before, their son/daughter asked for, etc?

Image

IMHO this is exactly what Samsung is playing at, especially in markets where they don't even put their logo. There is no real technical reason to make them look so much alike.

I'm glad at least their German-specific model now has a clear difference..

Unless you bring a picture with you, you arent helped by the latter. And if you can bring a picture you can bring a piece of paper with the product name.

You know, if i called my dad up and said: Hey, i need a SG 2TB Barracuda stat. Can you pick up one after work? He wouldnt be able to tell these things apart at the store. How would he get it right? a) read on the box b) ask the staff. Now, move to TV's. How do you separate those? "Yeah, dad... its... black, glossy and square. No, not that one, the other one."

And yeah, if they're looking at a demo device - look at the back for christs sake. They look nothing alike.

----------

If I were "mom", I'd probably keep it. I've gotten into this habit of reading tons of books on my iPhone recently. A habit which, I'm sure, is directly responsible for me suddenly needing glasses after all these years. A bigger screen would sorta help me out a bit.

...though I could use another reindeer sweater, too. Those things are expensive.

An impression that's about damn true. I went into Best Buy a few months back to buy HDMI cables, and I had one of their experts or whatever they're called try to sell me something like gold plated cables because, and I quote, "it lessens the static noise across the line and produces better picture quality". I mean hey, it only cost $30 more. I want the best, right?

I'm pretty sure the guy thought I was the idiot, because I stared at him slackjawed for about 5 minutes before walking away.

To be fair, when it comes to the cables i almost feel sorry for them. Its not like they know that they're talking ****. Next time, just say: Give me your cheapest HDMI cable. Paid like 3 bucks for mine, digital is digital. Dont believe the hype, people.

(disclaimer: if you need a long cable, dont follow my advice).

Yeah, Apple cramming two speakers into the same corner so that you cant even hear the stereo effect is sooooo muuuuch beeetteeeer.

What do you mean two speakers, there's only one speaker on the iPad and iPhone.

Both devices are mono, nowhere does Apple claim to have stereo speakers. You want stereo on a thing that size plug in some headphones.

You misread my comment, I made it clear I was mentioning non-techie buyers, not those that tell their dads explicitly to buy 2TB Barracudas.

These people would see Apple's ads on TV and then at the store see the Samsung looking pretty much the same as it on the shelves. So they take it home, they don't go around asking the shop staff if this is "really an iPad". It looks exactly like it, it must be the same or at least do exactly the same things.

Obviously in tech forums like these it's hard to imagine such people exist, but they do - and they're actually the majority - spend some time at the tech section of a large store (e.g. Walmart) and you'll understand it.

If Apple has so much imagination, why is their tablet design not representative of out of the box thinking?

I always wonder if Apple thinks anyone would ever mistake a Samsung product with Apple devices. If this is true, it goes to show the level of intelligence of such people.

That is one interpretation. The other interpretation is that Samsung's products are actually so good that Apple has a real reason to be worried.

Both devices are mono, nowhere does Apple claim to have stereo speakers. You want stereo on a thing that size plug in some headphones.

It has been said on these forums many times the iPad has Stereo speakers, they are just in the same unit and send the sound out of one hole.

If I am out and about or in a noisy environment then yes, headphones, but why should I be forced to wear headphones when relaxing at home.

So you honestly believe sound coming out of one hole, firing sideways, away from the user is a better design that having speakers either side of the screen and pointing towards the user?

Apparently, ipad2 has a stereo speaker, albeit positioned in such a way that sound in essence become... mono. I you have an ipad2, shield half of the speaker grill off, see for yourself.

Regardless, to jump on Samsung for actually giving you a stereo effect is silly. I'd sure as hell take stereo in landscape over mono all the time.

---

So, what would non-techers say? Well, most likely, they've heard the word "ipad", right? Or... that "tablet made by apple", "that large ipod" whatever.

Your argument is basically this. McDonalds show a burger commercial. I see a burger joint. I buy a burger (somehow) thinking it was McDonalds burger. (no one else should be able to sell burgers but mcdonalds).

You dont just walk out with a 500 usd product not noticing the difference between an apple product and a samsung product. If you do, you did not know what you wanted.

In your world: explain to me how someone can ever buy a TV, not buying the wrong one. You dont really think that random customers have knowledge in advance about the specific look of specific series & vendors, right? So how do they do it, and why cannot the same solution be applied on tablets (and if they cannot do it, why is this not a big problem in the TV-business?)

Oh wow thanks had no idea about this. Thought one speaker grill = one speaker.

Not at all. My argument is, in McDonalds terms, you see a McDonalds commercial - let's say once or twice in your life. You go down the street and someone is selling this:

slide_16166_224808_small.jpg

What would you think? Without much prior knowledge would you really recognise that the logo is different and it's not McDonalds at all?

You dont just walk out with a 500 usd product not noticing the difference between an apple product and a samsung product. If you do, you did not know what you wanted.

Most people don't know precisely what they want and still spend 500, hell even more, on things.

Most people buy the TV that looks the best and is the cheapest. Right? That works out because all TVs do the same in the end.

The problem is tablets don't all do the same. Most people don't know that.

might as well be, as that is the effect it gives.

What would you think? Will people really recognise that the logo is different and it's not McDonalds at all?

Key question to solve first of all is: Did i want a mcdonalds burger, or just a burger, like the one in the commercial. If i want a Big Mac from McDonalds but go into Burger King and order a Whopper... well, its hard to call foul.

Most people don't know precisely what they want and still spend 500, hell even more, on things.
If they dont know what they want, how can anyone cry foul? They were not tricked into buying a Tab thinking it was an iPad. They just wanted something, and went for the former.

In essence: I saw the McD commercial. I was hungry. I thought, mmm.. Burgers for dinner. I swing by my local burger joint. No foul.

Most people buy the TV that looks the best and is the cheapest. Right? That works out because all TVs do the same in the end.
All tv's dont do the same in the end. Nor do all videos, cameras, computers.

The problem is tablets don't all do the same. Most people don't know that.
Samsung should not be blamed for consumer stupidity. What you are basically saying is what? Only Apple should be allowed to sell devices... because consumers might be stupid enough to freely buy a non-Apple device?

p.s.

without much knowledge, i would call the chinese knock-off store as a chinese knock-off store. the Tab is not a chinese knock-off ipad. Its a tablet. A Burger. Heck, a double whopper next to a big mac. Do they share core similarities? Sure. Are they different? Definitely. Does one have to be retarded to mix the two up, and end up going home with the wrong one? (Knowing in advance what one wants). Most certainly.
