ok, 2 ridiculous points:

- a one-day battery
- having a camera in the strap

I would never buy a watch that i have to recharge everyday

a camera in the strap ???? what for ???

there is already a camera on the smartphone

Samsung just tried to put some features of a smartphone in a watch, it's useless

i hope that Apple will not make the same mistake

Trust Samsung to rush out another half-baked product just because they think that's what Apple is doing whilst putting no thought or effort into design or functional. Laggy and basically no battery life? Plus it looks so uncomfortable on the wrist and it didn't need a camera. Good one, Samsung.

Samsung releases a Gear 2 w/ all these issues fixed and they'll be innovative, ahead of the curve w/ so many improvements.

Apple releases a polished iWatch and then an iWatch S and they're boring, sitting on their cash, etc.

Just saying!

At least if I'm a lefty (and wear my watch on my right hand) I can take awesome dick pics all day long!!!

Visible screws? We finally have use for the "Steve wouldn't have" phrase. :D

Seriously, this is why we don't have a smart watch/wearables device from Apple yet. They would never release one that got a day (or less) battery life. Seems to me Samsung rushed something out because they were bound and determined to have something on the market before Apple.

The screws really stood out to me, too. Unbelievably lame.

If Apple had released it, I'd predict it would be a total failure.
Since Samsung released it, it is already a total failure.

First Microsoft, now Samsung. Microsoft listened to all those people who claimed that Apple would unify MacOS X and iOS, and worked hard to beat Apple to it, creating Windows 8. Turns out Apple isn't doing this, and Windows 8 is a total failure. Now Samsung listened to all those people claiming that Apple would build the "iWatch" and made a product exactly like these people predicted. But totally different from anything Apple would build. Well, they should have waited for the Apple product to copy it.

Wow. This is actually worse than I expected. Can you innovate failing? Samsung seems to be doing just that.

It's actually not worse than I expected from Samsung :D

1) Aforementioned battery life. 1 day for a phone, OK. For a watch, you gotta be joking. The Nike Fuelband (yes doesn't have a color screen, but also has a smaller battery) gets 3 days and even that can become a PITA to manage.

I exchanged the battery on my watch a few months ago, after wearing it with very few interruptions for about 12 years.

You forget the Galaxy Note, This is pretty orginonal. The S-pen is pretty amazing. Beside, the CEO already said this Galaxy Gear thing is "expermential".

I agree. Samsung is very invotative and produces quatily products.

That is one ugly and bulky looking watch.

Samsung just made this so they could beat the rumoured iWatch to the market. The problem is there doesn't seem to be anything special about it, its just a smartwatch. And if it is laggy with a poor battery, it seems like they didn't even make a good watch. I think Apple is taking their time to make something unique and hopefully with some unexpected features that will be something people want to buy.

It will be interesting to see how much the Samsung watch changes once Apple comes out with the iWatch.

"Sorry I was late, I forgot to recharge my WATCH, and lost track of time".... Said no one, ever.

If Apple comes out with something similar, and has similar abysmal battery life, I will be equally critical.

Tech watches do interest me, just needs to last much longer for me, and be more of an accessory, than a stand alone device in my opinion.

Seems like a poor product (and I'd feel the same, probably even more disappointed, if this was an Apple product):

2) Samsung press release touts it as a "fashion accessory". Maybe in theory, but this watch is thick and completely unstylish. They must have hired Timex to design it.

3) Functionality. From a fitness perspective it doesn't do anything more than any of the less expensive, lighter, longer battery life, sports bands. OK, it tells you the weather. I'm outside. I see the clouds or lacktherof. I don't need weather on my wrist. What I need is to know my approx heart rate while jogging but with out a stupid chest strap or other confining method.

4) Price point. $299 is absurd for this package even if it were stylish because it doesn't offer any real new functionality, and that is why people will buy a smart watch. Otherwise they can buy an actual fashion watch for that price or less.

The battery life will likely be a huge limiter for all these devices. Even if Apple comes out with something reasonable (say 2 weeks), I still think that is too often for a watch. I also don't think the Apple version will get close to 2 weeks.

I think what you'll see from Apple is something in this realm of design.

Probably wider but with this type of band/strap and curved glass with a nice display for reading and lots of cool health, graphics and notification lights/features.

This is what happens when Samsung has nothing to copy from and they come out with this...haha the next big thing.

This'll look great with my giant fake leather phone. Wait, what?

I don't even have a company allegiance* and these last two Samsung releases seem silly. The 6" faux leather phone and now the rushed to market "first!" of this watch thing.

I guess the trick is that this kind of stuff seems to sell and doesn't cost that much to build, so there's no reason for them not to do it. I'm personally glad that one of their "throw it at the wall" experiments was the pen-enabled tablet, but otherwise haven't seen anything Samsung's done that I'm interested in.

*I build my own Windows/Linux desktops, use Apple laptops, have a Samsung tablet (do a lot of drawing so the Note's pen was the priority) and an IP5.

I do agree that the pen thing was a good example of Samsung's willingness to experiment, but this is just straight up trying to beat Apple to market on an idea that (to me) seemed silly even when it was Apple's.

God, "I believe this will become a fashion icon?!" Delusional. They'll sell exactly 16 of these.

"I believe it will become a new fashion icon around the world," said Samsung CEO JK Shin.

Perhaps in the Far East, where wearing wacky **** is part of established, and I use the term in a wholly ironic sense, fashion. This is a knee-jerk reaction on Samsung's part to beat Apple to market and I honestly believe it's something is going to bite them in the ass.

100% agreed. This is ridiculous, especially for the lack of features it has and it's size already. I'm guessing Apple will get 3-5 days at the start of their device.

Designed by engineers. What do you expect.

Yep, this is basically a DOA device. Does nothing and has a severe lack of features and is relying on 3rd party apps. Bad call. Something like this should have the apps designed in house only.

4) Price point. $299 is absurd for this package even if it were stylish because it doesn't offer any real new functionality, and that is why people will buy a smart watch. Otherwise they can buy an actual fashion watch for that price or less.

Yep. Apple's I bet will be around $199-$250.

Pebble has that claim.

Not even Pebble. Pebble did get a lot of press and advance the expectations though.

A smart watch isn't personally exciting to me. I have no need or desire. But at least the Pebble concept keeps it simple - and using e-ink rocks on battery life I believe.

All the extras and noise to me seems silly. I'd never use my watch to take a picture. (Of course I say that now - cut to 10 years from now...) And for me, I don't need to look at my watch for alerts. In fact - most days I don't even wear a watch.

Further - if I was using a smartwatch to keep track of fitness - I'd use a simple band which runs a lot less $.

And yes, I do realize this is my use case only. But $299 for a watch - this one or even if Apple makes one is just not of interest to me.

While its certainly not the greatest looking thing ever - it is not as bad as i thought samsung would make it. there are some pretty elements to it - I like the texture of the wristband.

But yes - this thing wont fly. But as a first attempt its decent - at least for samsung.
