Then why exactly is Apple "so incredibly stupid" for ditching the headphone jack?

Because it was a needless decision. Waterpoofing? BS as Samsung and Sony both have had waterpoof phones with headphone jacks for years. Space? BS again, we know they could have fit it in there.

The real reason was to disrupt the market and pretty much force consumers to spend more money on their wireless headphones. It pisses off consumers, but it doesn't matter because Apple DOES NOT CARE what it's consumers want.

You guys get that TouchID needs to be able to 'see' your fingerprints and other phone activities do not, right?
What I get is that FaceID is a nice technology but it's not the must have feature that people say it is. Especially given that you're going to be using your fingers to use the phone. I don't see it being a game changer. Nice? Yes, must have? No.

If someone where to release a notchless, forehealess, chinless phone, yea that would be great, but technology isn’t there, so for now I’d rather have as much screen as possible on a small footprint, and the notch give me that
Also, I honestly like the notch because it gives the iPhone a distinct look that will become just as iconic as the classic home button layout.
When one day there's a notchless iPhone, that will be just a rounded rectangle within another rounded rectangle. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Confused, iPhone Lightening Cable is a wired option the last time I checked. Offers more and better sound options for users and headphone manufactures. Definitely moving forward, so what’s the issue if one wants a wired connection?

It's locked down to Apple's device, just like everything else Apple.

The problem is the notch is disruptive. It interrupts the screen. So what value does having a couple of "ears" buy you? Nothing of importance. Again: If you said it doesn't bother you then I can accept that. To say you prefer it? Sorry, not buying it.

Why can’t Apple or Samsung make a flagship phone without some weird contortion to the screen? It’s either a notch on top or curved sides...

Can we just get a top end phone with a flat, rectangular screen? I know, how pedestrian.

True. That was a marketing decision.

Good point, without the home button the notch is the new iPhone signature, but I do feel that anyone that able to have that full screen and hide all the sensors camera and speaker under the glass will have a huge advantage

Eventually yes, but technoly isn’t there yet, almost but not quite

Oh who cares! A few millimetres of negative space dedicated to a bunch of sensors isn't going to make a drastic difference to your viewing experience.

At least Samsung had enough class to spend only mere moments on their AR-based emoji feature instead of 30 minutes like Apple did. They know their base...

Which is where preference comes in, do you want those millimeters in a notch, or a forehead, and it depends on the person

Or this new ridiculous trend of 18:9 ratio screen... LOL. I'm sure 16:9 looks JUST DANDY on those screens. MAKES SENSE!

The substitute for the 3.5mm headphone jack is this:
  • You need to charge yet another device
  • battery life is crap
  • battery is NOT removable, rendering headphones useless once the charge doesn't hold
Why is it OK to have a wire to the headphone jack but never occasionally to a USB battery pack, which literally everyone reading this owns?

  • sound quality is garbage
  • wireless range isn't great
  • EXPENSIVE
How is wireless range a downside when you're used to using a 3' wire connected to your phone? And there are plenty of Bluetooth headphones available over a vast range of pricing, from $20-2000.

This is supposed to be the successor to headphone jack? What problem did you ever have with wired headphones other than the presence of a wire?

You've never used headphones while exercising, or in any situation where the cord is kind of a pain? You've never had to run a headphone cord through your sweatshirt so it's not in the way of whatever you're doing?

Also, you do know that the existence of the headphone jack DOES NOT mean you can't also have bluetooth as an option, RIGHT??

We're just responding to the "but the headphone jack" argument by pointing out that BT works fine for headphones. You guys are the ones insisting that we need both. We do not.

I'm not using a dongle since I need to charge at the same time and I'm NOT going to use Apple's crappy and brutally overpriced tampon strings hanging out of my ears.... and I am NOT going to be bothered with having to remember to charge yet another device.

This is NOT a solution to the 3.5mm jack. Just bring back the port and we can finally have the bluetooth crowd quit complaining about the inability to admit bluetooth being inferior.

Why do you need to change? Mine goes all day playing, texting, talking, exercising. When I am not playing, pop in the charger, easy. I use my Apple cheap free ear buds, switch to my somewhat expensive Bose Noise Canceling that the lightening really does offer excellent sound. Change is good.:)

I agree.... but I still can't get over their 2013 presentation... I mean, they had a family act out a cheezy script and a kid TAP DANCING (go to 33:15 mark)

You didn't but you gave me the feeling that it was too much for you....If you want to go long term you can also buy rechargeable batteries and you are set for life.
Saying that it cost more is not the same as saying it's too much. There's a big difference.

How is it clumsy? Especially since you have to use your fingers to use both of them?

That's actually a great question, and the clumsiness is mostly related to navigating iOS. Removing your thumb from the screen for all the button clicking is the clumsy part. I really like being able to switch apps without having to consciously move my thumb off the screen down to the button, and then moving it back.

I know that probably sounds like no big deal, but I'd bet that anyone that still uses both technologies every day knows what I mean. The X has a much more fluid way of navigating the device.

In another year, Touch ID will be gone, in my opinion. Hanging onto it as a must have is like trying to bear hug water.
I don't recall anyone saying Touch ID is the best. What I have been saying is Face ID isn't the must have some people say it is. Especially when you have to use your fingers to control the phone once the phone is unlocked. So the argument one has to use their fingers to unlock a phone is bad falls short.
