Why is it OK to have a wire to the headphone jack but never occasionally to a USB battery pack, which literally everyone reading this owns?

Great, more lies from more members on macrumors.

I, don't own one. Because I, don't need one. My phone lasts me all day and I've got access to USB at home, at work and in my car. Why would I need a usb battery pack?

So much for 'literally everyone'

Apparently I'm not so feel free to explain it. As for preferring the notch, yeah...sure you do. I can believe you if you say you don't mind it. But to say you prefer it? I'm not buying that.

Because you guys all act like the alternative to the notch is to have a bezel-less phone, while in fact the alternative to having a notch is to have a large bezel all the way across the top of the phone.

So yeah, I prefer the notch because it utilizes the left/right ears for something other than just being a useless bezel. There is no "removing" the notch, there's only extending the notch to the entire width of the phone. There's no advantage to me for them to do that.

I don't recall anyone saying Touch ID is the best. What I have been saying is Face ID isn't the must have some people say it is. Especially when you have to use your fingers to control the phone once the phone is unlocked. So the argument one has to use their fingers to unlock a phone is bad falls short.
For many people it is a must-have. You can't say it isn't because you aren't those people in those situations and usage.

There will be a bezel-less phone in the future. The question is, if people will continue to complain after the camera housing is gone.

Wait, are you telling me I can use wireless earbuds even though the phone has a headphone jack. I want to make sure I got this right, the phone has a headphone jack, yet I am still able to use wireless earbuds if I choose. So the jack itself takes nothing away from the phone and I still get ip68 rating. That's awesome, why would anyone take the jack away. I honestly don't get it.

You can still use any headphone with iPhone, but it time to end the whining about headphone jack...

....until Apple decides to add fingerprint back... let's see if what you said holds true. lol

Yeah Apple isn't bring the fingerprint reader back.

Aha - you mean ad hominem. Trying to impress beyond abilities. You can have this one, girl.

FaceID is not a must have. The only people who care about FaceID are those justifying the iPhone X

Much better than confusing opinion with facts. But you can have this one, girl. I honestly could not care one bit about quasi internet intellectuals...

People don't have to justify their what they buy, I personally really like the X, one of the best iPhones I have ever owned.

Because it was a needless decision. Waterpoofing? BS as Samsung and Sony both have had waterpoof phones with headphone jacks for years. Space? BS again, we know they could have fit it in there.

The real reason was to disrupt the market and pretty much force consumers to spend more money on their wireless headphones. It pisses off consumers, but it doesn't matter because Apple DOES NOT CARE what it's consumers want.

It was more they needed space, and it was bonus that it was easier to do the waterproofing.

Why do you need to change? Mine goes all day playing, texting, talking, exercising. When I am not playing, pop in the charger, easy. I use my Apple cheap free ear buds, switch to my somewhat expensive Bose Noise Canceling that the lightening really does offer excellent sound. Change is good.:)

I drive a lot and use a single earbud headphone with mic to talk while driving.

I am not going to buy the phone but I can't wait to see the reviews about the low light photography. Who knows, maybe by 2025 smartphones will replace cameras all together.
Camera will still top it for awhile. Eventually, it might catch up. Anyway, the phone with ultimate low light is something I would be seeking as I do shoot videos at night.

In another year, Touch ID will be gone, in my opinion. Hanging onto it as a must have is like trying to bear hug water.

Right now, I still prefer TouchID. For me, it works better - having owned and used an X for five weeks. But I think the tech is terminal. Apple just needs to improve the UI/UX, in my opinion. But plenty of people seem to be happy enough just the way it is now.

How is this a problem given the notch is, essentially, the same thing. I'm still confused as to why bezels are a bad thing.

Clearly you have never used a Sony or LG smartphone. Ah, to live I a walled garden :)

Got a Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact right now, sound quality is great. The new LG phones are supposed to be top notch as well. Apple unfortunately has never been known for sound quality.. going all the way back to their ipods, Apple consistently ranked at the bottom of all blind audio tests.

Headphone jack=outdated. Sorry about it but it's true
It's technology that works and works well. It's an additional option. You're making a viable functional technology into the equivalent of a fashion statement that can go out of style just because the popular kid up and decides to declare it outdated without giving any concrete support for such an assertion.

That line of thinking causes problems when the available replacement technology introduces complications and disadvantages that have not yet been solved.

Apple and some other manufacturers jumped the gun removing the headphone jack when doing so causes the level of fragmentation we've seen among accessories and compatibility across other devices.

They didn't remove it to take us into the future. They did it to make money selling us more headphones. They possibly even did it to free up needed space inside the phone.

But they had to sell us on the idea somehow so they declared it "the future" and an act of courage to remove a still viable and desirable option. Many people who used that port for accessories besides headphones, such as merchants at craft shows found its removal a hardship when they went to upgrade their phones.

And like any fad, others jumped on the bandwagon, ready or not. And so on the Android side of things we have a bit of a mess with USB-C headphones from one manufacturer not working with the phones of another. So good on Samsung for exercising some restraint in following this particular trend right now.

The problem is the notch is disruptive. It interrupts the screen. So what value does having a couple of "ears" buy you? Nothing of importance. Again: If you said it doesn't bother you then I can accept that. To say you prefer it? Sorry, not buying it.

I really isn't that disruptive, more and more apps are making use of the ears.

I was very close @blairh...

AT&T is $790 for the S9 and $915 for the S9 Plus

Here is what I said:

Nice try though... Next..... LOL
Ah yes, pick the higher price from the carrier instead of the better price from Samsung.

S9 for $719.99; S9 Plus for $839.99.

You were wrong. Period.

With the next release, I think FaceID will be even faster and more accurate. I look forward to it, as FaceID is around 95% accurate first time for me. I see that as a win for a first release.
