I’m astounded at how good that sounds on paper. What a gutting shame that iOS provides the superior experience. Imagine a world where you could install any OS on any phone- much like the computer market..... but that the chosen OS would magically be optimized completely for it. Shame these companies are too proud to let you do such a thing. It would be very beneficial to us consumers.

Welcome to Samsungrumors.com ?

I don't care for Androidstuff, that's why I got macrumors bookmarked and not androidrumors (if that even exists)
Are you newer to this site than me yet you don’t know this site covers news about competing and related products to Apple?

Space is like the single biggest constraint in a phone, you can't deny it.

The lack of a headphone jack in iPhone 7 allowed them to move the Taptic Engine down quite a bit, while making it significantly larger and still having a taller battery compared to iPhone 6s. This is important, since the Taptic Engine is what makes the home button "click" on iPhone 7 and 8.

Don't they include cabled EarPods with every iPhone, and even an adapter so you can connect any pair of analog headphones? Nobody forces consumers to spend money on anything. However if consumers decide to go wireless, maybe even because they feel forced, most of them will discover that's what they wanted all along but didn't realize.

The analog headphone jack in smartphones is done. Get over it. Apple wasn't even the first company to do away with it, they're just the major player that made everyone else follow (yes, Samsung will too, eventually).

Yeah the argument for removing the headphone jack for waterproofing was always bogus rubbish. The actual reason and benefits are as you said, bigger battery and moving the Taptic Engine.

You assume too much. I do know, yet I don't like it, and I've seen them evolve in the last 15 years... And I'd rather have them stop posting Samsung-news, unless it is directly linked to Apple, ie the lawsuits.

Samsung SGS 8/8+/9/9+
Samsung Dex (hardware connection) + BT Keyboard/Moue + External Monitor + External charger for SGS (& LCD plug)
Install Linux Desktop Distro for ARM
Results:
Full Desktop OS and Applications
Full programming SDK (Eclipse for Android)
Full Web browsing, plugins, codecs, cloud based storage access (we already get this on smartphones), full VPN and connections to corporate networks, file systems, and corporate intranet sites (Sharepoint etc), network/infrastructure for I.T.

So yeah getting work done an a smartphone is VERY possible, capable and available since Oct 2017. Look this all up ... you'll find you maybe very surprised. Many videos just show Samsung's Dex not the full installation of say Suse/Fedora/Ubuntu desktop distros.

I'm doing some digging this week and I'm heavily fascinated and haven't been interested in Linux Desktop OS since Fedora Core 2/3 ... and I am once again. Exciting times.

What's our alternative or match from Apple again? I still await Apple to feel their consumers (me/you/us) are ready to have MacOS loaded on iOS iPhones and some comparable accessories to be used like I've mentioned above for full mobile computing.

Motorola tried this all twice before and failed, no full Linux Distro possible.
I think Cannonocal (Ubuntu) tried this as well and failed too. no traction.

Samsung is getting somewhere.

I didn’t make myself clear in my post, yes certainly possible if you add a Dex, I.e a mouse, keyboard and a monitor, but given the original poster said he insisted on an iPhone (which none of these things can be added) over an S8 that can so he could get his work done, I called him out.

iOS/iPhone fan here.

I think it's a great upgrade from samsung. That camera seems awesome, at least on paper. I liked features like all those AR things right on the camera, the bixby on demand translations of what's being displayed, the merge of multiple images for better photos quality, and the great dual aperture camera. Even the Animoji approach (which I'm not very interested) seems better than the one on the iPhone. I also like for there to be a fingerprint unlock option.

On the bottom line, although I love iOS and iPhone and will stick with them, I think it's good for everyone that there is good competition. I hope Apple catches up on those features.

Not sure the advantage of the dual physical aperture. I mean why would one not want the largest (smallest number) aperture to allow most light in? Due to the tiny sensor size, aperture size won't affect depth of field much. So I'm not sure the point of the variable aperture other than a marketing gimmick.

Consumers are clearly going to purchase from Samsung now if they offer the cheapest price. Look, you were wrong. Period. The S9 can be had for $719 at retail. You tried to imply to me in the past that the S9 would cost more this year and it does not. Fact. So twist it to fit your narrative as you wish to try to save face here.

Also the S9 pricing only exacerbates how ridiculous the iPhone X is to start at $1k. Which was my previous point in the past, only made concrete now.

Okay so reading comprehension is not a strong point, that's cool but I'll try one more time...

Most people buy their phones from the carriers. You see, that's why the carriers charge more for them than buying direct from Samsung. I'd expect that about 90% of S9 and S9+ sales will be from carrier stores. Geeks might buy from Samsung but the normal regular everyday Joe and Jane will buy from their carrier.

So lets recap:

You've been hating on the X and complaining about the price for a while now. I stated the S9 and S9+ would be close to the X and listed what I predicted the prices would be.

Here again (for the 3rd time) was what I said the prices would be. Maybe you can grasp it this time?

iPhone 8 = $700 ($300 difference)
iPhone 8 Plus = $800 ($200 difference)
Galaxy S9 = $800-$850 (rumored) ($150-$200 difference)
Galaxy S9+ = $900-$950 (rumored) ($100-$50 difference)
Galaxy Note 8 = $950 ($50 difference)
iPhone X = $999

I don't see the X as being that far from the new normal as far as major brand flagships and pricing goes. I do think the X is $100 overpriced though. I think $899 is about right for it and if it were priced there maybe there would be less hate.

Now compare my price guess with a few of the carrier prices:

AT&T: S9 for $790 and the S9+ for $915
Verizon: S9 for $800 and the S9+ for $930
Sprint: S9 for $792 and the S9+ for $912

I hope at this point that comprehension is setting in. If not maybe you can try and read the post several times? It's worth a shot...

I suppose a few month from now you'll be back comparing a grade B S9 woot price to the X as well eh?

Of course you prefer Animojis. Just like you prefer a notch obstructing your view of the display. If I'm ever looking for sound judgement on any matter, I'm most definitely calling you up.
The notch gives you more display. Easy as that. I'll take the notch over that huge top bezel of the s8/9 every day.

Samsung on Sunday unveiled its latest Galaxy S9 and S9+ flagship smartphones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, showcasing the handset's new dual-lens camera, stereo speakers, and AR-powered emoji. The new smartphones take the same general design as the Galaxy S8 devices, with slightly slimmer bezels on the top and bottom.

The headline feature of the S9 and S9+ is a 12-megapixel dual lens camera, boasting the first variable aperture system built into a smartphone, which promises better results in low light conditions and hardware-based shallow depth of field effects. Samsung's new photography computation also shoots 12 photos in three groups of four and then combines them at the pixel level to eliminate noise and boost detail.

The S9 features variable dual lens 12-megapixel cameras with dual optical image stabilization, while the S9+ features a variable aperture lens paired with a second 12-megapixel lens with a fixed aperture. The S9 Plus also includes a new slow-motion mode that can shoot at 960 frames per second, which can turn a 2-millisecond recording into six seconds of video. For comparison's sake, Apple's iPhone X shoots at a maximum of 240 frames per second.

In U.S. models, the S9 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processor, but in other regions, including Europe, the smartphone is powered by Samsung's own Exynos chip. Samsung has combined the face and iris recognition features into a new system called Intelligent Scan, which uses the best biometric sensor for the given situation. The fingerprint scanner on the back now sits below the camera module rather than alongside it. Like the S8 devices, the displays on the 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch models are Quad HD+ and Super AMOLED, respectively. Also, there's a headphone jack.

The inevitable comparison of Samsung's new AR-based emoji will be Animoji on iPhone X, which map users' facial expressions onto cartoon facades using Apple's TrueDepth camera technology. However the Galaxy S9 diverges here by creating 3D personalized characters more akin to Bitmoji or Nintendo Mii avatars, which can then be shared as GIFs.

The S9 comes with 4GB of RAM while the S9+ has 6GB of memory. Both versions come with a base 64GB storage (user expandable up to 400GB via the Micro SD slot). In the U.S., the S9 starts at $720, with the S9+ costing $840. Pre-orders for both models begin on March 2 and the phones start shipping on March 16.

The super resolution software trick (12 pictures into 3 groups of 4) is really interesting. I used to have an app on my iPhone which merged 8 pictures into one to bump up resolution and details. It was not updated to 64 bits and I really miss it.
It was not easy to use but the results were great, I've tried other but non of them would do super resolution as well as the old app.
Hopefully Samsung has found a way to make it work, which means Apple will probably implement it next time around.

My point is that you need your fingers to do anything with the phone once it's unlocked so what benefit does not using your fingers to unlock the phone buy you? If all you can do is unlock the phone and then look at it then it's a non-starter.
Good thing there are gloves that work with touch screens. Face id is insane. It's fast and convenient. Pick up the phone abd it's unlocked and can start using it. Not ever going back to a fingerprint sensor. I mean, what year is this? 2013?

Looks good to me. I'm stuck on IOS but there are some camera features here that I like the look of. Fact is, at this price Samsung will continue selling more units than Apple, so whatever.

You assume too much. I do know, yet I don't like it, and I've seen them evolve in the last 15 years... And I'd rather have them stop posting Samsung-news, unless it is directly linked to Apple, ie the lawsuits.

Problem is, due to Apple making and releasing so little, this site would be dead 90% of the time without other company news/products.

You’re really not understanding my point are you...so close minded
And the way it see it the notch adds more screen space where other phones would not have any, therefore I prefer it
You are wasting your time with this dense person. Prejudiced, opinionated and probably not a user of the FaceID.

It’s like trying to explain the difference between a car that does not start easily and takes multiple cranking and floods and frustrates you versus a car that starts at the first attempt. Well, once the car starts (no matter how difficult or easy according to this person) what do you do differently with it? Drive right?

The iPhone is dated compared to Samsung. We know that. But Apple users (and I used to be one) are buying into the walled garden and the Big Brother security of its ecosystem. Fair enough. Yes. People are slowly peering their heads over that wall and realising that there is an alternative. Samsung know that and are probably as smug as Tim in the knowledge folks are enjoying the choice once they’ve had the bravery to take the jump. Fine. But it’s a double edged sword for Samsung as well. Chinese manufacturers like Huawei and OnePlus are now making stuff as good as and sometimes better than Samsung for half the price. Literally. Yes Android is improving on each iteration and so is the choice of phone. More features in hardware and software and equal quality than the big two suppliers And so the S9 ... superior as it is (presently) to anything out there. Like Apple has - Samsung cannot get complacent with minor changes. And that’s no bad thing for the consumer. The new competition are bringing prices down and bettering their efforts now and in a couple of years they’ll probably have overtaken them. And once dyed in the wool Samsung owners and IOS fanthusiasts click on to the fact that they’ve been paying twice for the same exact thing then the major market change will happen.

Except it doesn't - here are screen to body ratios (Source) for Samsung phones and the iPhone X:

S8: 83.6%
S8+: 84%
Note8: 83.2%

iPhone X: 82.9%

Vivo Apex concept is at 98%. It can be done. As an X owner I would loved if Apple did something like Vivo Apex.

Yeah it absolutely does. Or are you trying to tell me the s8/9 would have less screen if they'd have a notch and add extra space left and right of the ear piece.
