It's amusing how people will constantly see Animoji as a use-once-and-then-never-again feature, calling it virtually useless. But what they fail to realize is the research, development, and engineering that went into creating the feature — that same technology opens up so many doors in so many new ways. So while Animoji may be a fun feature on the surface, it's a big step forward for 3D camera technology. We haven't even seen the half of it yet.

I did not make a claim. I was responding to your statement: "And I didn’t see many other stories claiming they were copying Apple."
Ok on the rules issue. My apologies, the offending item was removed even though it was question, not an instruction.

There is no need to be in doubt. I was making an add on to another poster's item. You asked about Gmail and Maps. Didn't realize the response should be limited to one poster.
In regard to the confusion:

Not clear why you included me in on that, I never made that claim.

Thanks for stating it, not clear why as that was never in dispute on my end.

Google and Samsung were mentioned because of this statement by you:
"Clearly it’s when a company actually invents something. Not like Apple just buys everything.."
They were mentioned only to show that it's not only Apple.
If you didn't tag that on there would be no need to show additional information.

My reply on what constitutes innovation was in a reply to a reply that was discussing Apple, hence my mentioning of it. I’ve never pertained no one else buys other companies as opposed to not innovating in my eyes, they all do it.
And regarding my comment on Huawei, that’s the impression I got from your post.

Samsung's famous R&D department in action: Receive & Duplicate.

Samsung Note is too big! Apple would never make a bigger phone because that's dumb! ---> iPhone Plus

And

Samsung Galaxy S8 has no home button! Physical buttons are good! ---> iPhone X

I am a happy iPhone X owner but come on guys.

Wait a minute, apple didn't create this. Apple copied this from what was already being done in the MOVIE industry. Apple was just the first to add it to a phone.
Correction they bought the company who pioneered this tech 2 years ago. They perfected it and the sensors required to make it work on a phone. So, it is their tech. They bought the head start. Unlike some companies who just like to see what Apple does, claim it sucks until they can rush out a thrown together copy 8-12 months later. Sound familiar?

What’s funny is when something Apple is working on leaks, Samsung and Google always try to beat them to market with whatever it is. And keep in mind Samsung has a bit of an advantage because the screen for the iPhone X is made by them so they knew the size of the screen and that Apple will keep it compatible with the os. They knew 2 years ago that they were working on a phone with no button. They just couldn’t figure out how they would make it work

In the phone business companies copy from each other all the time. Nothing new here.

I remember years ago my daughter loved playing on my Sony phone because it would put funny masks over our faces and dinosaurs walked through our bedroom. While it wasn't so "advanced" as the Animojis, it was more or less the same thing (who apart from 7 year olds and big paid executives who like to embarrass themselves in a keynote, gives a rats a$$ about that anyway).

This Sony had also a portrait background blur function and the Galley app would create little clips, called Memories, Moments or Acid Flash Backs (can't remember) by itself. Years later I find the same functions in iOS.

People need to explore more. You would be surprised.

The S8 still has home “button”, it’s just that it’s virtual as recommended by reference Android for years.
iPhone X on the other hand got rid of the “home button”, virtual or physical, completely.

Ugh, is this really where we are in technology? Something as dumb as animoji is such a huge headlining feature that everyone copies it and it makes headlines? Let's get real. Animoji is something that most people use once or twice, get sick of the gimmick, then never use it again.

I guess people got sick of "oh look, they used a different color paint this time!", so they had to come up with something else equally mundane.

News must be really, really slow to carry this story.

Next, new colors of paper clips are announced for Spring 2018, be excited!

Forget renewable energy, extending lifespans, world peace, we gots us some emojis!

Come on people. Apple does a lot of copying too: Homepod, wireless charging, etc.

I'm not sure you can really say they "copied" wireless charging when it's an open standard anybody can integrate in to their products. That's like saying one company copied another because they added a USB or HDMI port.

Apparently the technology in the HomePod has been in development for like 6 years, and IIRC, most "smart speakers" weren't really focussed on audio quality before the HomePod. The Echo was basically just about Alexa. Google announced their own "Home Max" music-focussed smart speakers after the HomePod (https://www.curbed.com/2017/10/4/16386380/google-home-max-mini-smart-speakers).

Companies aren’t nice to each other in competitive business. Apple and Samsung have both done their fair share of copying each other over the past decade.

I’d not be surprised if Apple are miffed at this though as it’s the only unique feature they are pushing in their advertising of the iPhone X here in Europe. They’ll have to change their adverts and focus on something else. That’s life, but Animoji’s are a gimmick I highly doubt get used by individuals on a daily basis.

All these companies need is for people to use Animoji once or twice and they’ve got their full face scans in their data banks.

I think this is true of many features they roll out. Look at how many things have been introduced and deprecated / killed off or just ignored forever after a few OS releases.

Samsung really have no shame.......

.... like come up with something original yourself.....

It's not like Apple invented the concept, they just rehashed Snapchat filters and added it to emoji.

Sadly nothing truly new is or has happened in the mobile market for some time.

Isn't Apple still being sued by the Japanese company that owns the Animoji trademark? Samsung would be foolish to copy a company already accused of copying the original copyrighted idea.
Isn't it the name Apple are being sued for rather than the idea?

As I understand it, they tried to buy "Animoji", he refused, so they just used it anyway.

In other news.

Apple has copied other Laptop manufacturers by using Intel CPU's, instead of making their own CPUs!!

SHOCKER!!

World ends.....
sorry that is truly a stupid comparisment.
Clearly it’s when a company actually invents something. Not like Apple just buys everything..
That’s obvious isn’t it? Otherwise Apple would never have settled out of court with Ericsson, right before Ericsson ripped them to pieces in court, because it innovated and invented the majority of tech that makes modern cellular work and has the patents to back it up.

You might not understand what innovation means. Invention is not equal to innovation. The latter is when (in this case) technology or a combination of technologies is applied to a product or a service that creates something new like an experience or a product. The source of the technology, or the creator of it you are referring to, has nothing to do with it. Apple's specialty is (or used to bee that can be discussed) customer experience. You can't deny it innovates on that aspect concerning the success of their MacBooks for example or phones, Apple Music, and the list continues...

The distinction between invention and innovation can become a thin line when combining existing technologies can lead to inventions to make that happen. It is true that patents are the guardian of intellectual capital to prevent that everyone use these inventions as a glue for their innovation. Apple has had multiple collisions in that, mostly they respond by developing their own new standards.
