I really like the concept of Samsung to offer a default-landscape mode tablet. I really would like to see Apple come up with something similar for the 12.9 inch model. Also the docking mode with a kind of real desktop is very neat.
Apple could easily adopt something like this with mac OS also running on the iPad. In that case, i would easily buy a 12.9 inch model with 1 TB of Storage and the pencil and the magic keyboard.

Apple, if yyou want to gain Users like me back, who switched to windows, do what Samsung did!

I prefer the Sammy tablets because Android allows you to run emulators, which are great for long commutes and plane rides. If Apple allowed emulators, I wouldn't bother with Android.

If typical person who'd opt for Samsung wouldn't anymore consider Apple than vice versa, why is an Apple customer anymore "locked in" than that Samsung customer? Hint: They're not.

iPad is the better tablet overall. The Galaxy is a better computer replacement. I have had iPads for years now, I own the M1 Pro 12.9" currently and it is frustratingly handicapped on purpose by Apple, I love it for media consumption but cannot seriously justify the many downsides for work.
I call iPads "first-world problems" for this reason. Very nice devices, but at the end of the day, you're trying hard to get back features any old PC would have. Guess it's good for media or for drawing.

Apple’s software & hardware integration and their attention to detail is what keeps me in their camp, yet that Samsung’s AMOLED screen looks gorgeous! ?

Yeah, because literally almost all video media is set at 16:9 (1080p) and not 4:3, so you really get to enjoy those last-century black bars when watching media on an iPad. THAT is super awkward.

And on iPad, controls don’t cover the content. Who cares about black bars?

This is a really tired argument. Android isn’t a problem anymore. If you have any experience with some of the latest android devices, you’d know that it’s actually pretty fluid and secure. The only gripe that someone might raise, it’s just it doesn’t match the longevity of software updates that Apple does.

But just because it’s ‘Android’, doesn’t make it less any other desirable to the consumer. It really comes down to choice of platform of what somebody prefers.

Android still sucks on tablets - Google doesn’t give a **** about tablet experience.

Years ago I stupidly bought a Samsung Galaxy tablet which at the time was the most feature rich and supposedly the best. I went with the Samsung tablet because it was less expensive than the iPad Pro at the time and you could use a mouse with it. I should have known I was in for trouble when I had to return the first one because the backing was loose and clicked.

Turns out the tablet I bought didn't sell very well and a year after its release Samsung stopped support. I never received OS updates. The OS on it was buggy and had lots of issues. I sold it to someone else and bought an iPad Pro. I should have gone with it to begin with and saved some money.

At least with Apple I know I have years of OS support. My iPad is still going strong 6 years later and running the latest OS. I may have to replace next year if it is not eligible for 16 but if so I'll have gotten my money's worth out of it.

I have the Ultra, and my 12.9 M1 is much better, in a number of ways. But like the article says, it's eco.

Samsung stuff is excellent. Google stuff? well.....

Oh, and the new Galaxy tabs are dim. I mean REALLY dim, even without the comparison. The OLED makes up for this, to a point. It's kind of a joke. Clearly, they are afraid of burn-in. Now some folks don't care, but this is a tough crowd here.
I feel the same way. I have both as well and the mini-LED is so much brighter. Since my eyes are pretty bad and I see halos on both OLED and mini-LED (probably due to my eye surgeries), I very much prefer the mini-LED screen. It's too bad Samsung is saving their double-stacked OLED screens for their S22 Ultra phone, which can get up to 1750 nits. Give the S8 Ultra one of those and this tablet would be immensely better.

Love that landscape camera. Really hoping the next Ipad Pro goes with a landscape camera.
I'm very curious what Apple's user surveys show. I'm sure if most people use the iPad Pro in landscape, they'll switch the camera. But as we saw in this thread, there are people who use it mostly in portrait. Somebody loses (and wins) no matter which decision Apple makes.

Android used to be garbage, and now it's passable, but why bother with second-rate. Actually Android 13 seems like a step backwards.

16:9 is super awkward for a tablet, Glad apple stuck to 4:3.

But the landscape camera is nice, I do wish Apple had a second camera in the Landscape orientation, with the Magic Keyboard I use my iPad 12.9” in landscape 90% of the time but even with CenterStage the camera being low and off to the side isn't great for video calls. Could just be a camera and FaceID stays in the portrait orientation since it works both ways.
I think 16:9 is a cost-saving measure and nothing else.

hopefully Apple go bigger with OLED only time I will trade my 1TB 12.9 M1 in
Unlikely, OLED panels aren't really bright enough (and it's a criticism of the panel in this Samsung tablet). Apple will go with microLED until OLED can produce the same brightness levels, or until nanoLED becomes feasible.

I do like the 16:9 form factor though, would be nice to see an iPad like that one day.

That’s a good point about the brightness with OLED, and is often overlooked. It’s one of the main issues I have on the Apple Watch as well.

As for micro LED, that’s been talked about for years, and Apple allegedly purchased a company known as ‘Luxshare’, who co- develops micro LED panels, so it’s definitely something that is in the future, but nowhere near mass production. Very few ‘tech’ manufacturers have actually produced micro LED, I believe Sony demoed a MicroLED TV at CES last year.

I think I messed up the LED panel types - microLED would be the place Apple want to get to in the near future, and I apparently made up nanoLED ?

OLED is great, but it's just a pit stop to microLED. The next few years are going to be amazing for display technologies. :)

As a former Android user I agree it’s gotten better over the years. But there are still some major issues (at least for me):
- Fragmentation of the system (not only the many different versions out there but also the manufacturer-specific customizations)
- Long term support (or lack thereof)
- Manufacturers rolling out OS updates seemingly at random (not for all devices that could run them, not in all regions, not in a timely manner)
- Reliance on Google
- As a developer I find the insane amount of different screen sizes and aspect ratios and not distinguishing between device type a pain in the ass for things like UI scaling

These are not points that bother every user, maybe not even a large number of users. They are, nevertheless, things that make me not want to use Android anymore.
That and Android on tablets is a more niche use case.

The Windows tablets are much better value and have a huge OLED screen. I can't move away from OLED since I had it on my XPS15. My M1 Mac looks like crap in comparison, very frustrating Apple won't release OLED

Also ripped into them about not including a charger in the box for their phones.

We all know what happened next….

Darn right this…

The usual indignation driven campaign, it’s like fake news or exaggerated (on purpose) articles, by the time they are found out or retracted or have to apologize for it’s too late, the world is already on the next two crap shooting endeavors.

Corporations have to know, at least the chance of, that included peripherals and accessories plannings will change. It’s a huge company with years long milestones… yet they run with it, the amount of people that would see the retraction happen is incredibly minor than the hit piece and it does the job: the target crowd base feels superior, the other feels mocked, plenty of articles are ran about… a ton of cake flies around thanks to it.

"OLED panel has an edge over the ‌iPad Pro‌'s mini-LED panel because of blooming," to beat a dead horse on a fake issue. why not? Even if there were a noticeable issue it would only occur at settings and brightness levels that the Samsung could not even dream of matching. While the Samsung is relatively bright for an OLED display, nah. then there is the red drift and burn in issue to deal with. so point, all the reputable sources have seen the bloom is not an issue, but you can duplicate for attack sakes when you take a video with another device which ends up distorting the display, so no, not an issue. Hey I fully support OLED, can't wait until they get it fixed. this dual layer approach is proomising to get them brighter, but red drift and burn in, how do you fix that? Some have proclaimed it would take a long time for burn in, yah, like 3000 hours, which is not much if you are using a device daily, so there is that

like someone said before you can run emulators, I have MAME and emulators running on the U8 Ultra with tons of games with my xbox controller and its fantastic. even game pass runs better on this than through safari on the iPad.

Had my Mini Led M1 iPad Pro since launch day.

Blooming is a total non issue, never see it when using my iPad, another overblown non issue.

The Mini led iPad Pro wipes the floor with the tab s8 ultra oled display.

No contest ?

A notch on the side?
