How does synthetic benchmark performance help with real world applications? For example, can it software decode VP9 YouTube videos above 1080p that even newest iPad Pro is still limited to? For comparison, a six year desktop CPU can do 4Kp30 VP9 YouTube software decoding.

Performance/watt isn't a thing when iPhone Xr and even XS Max trail the competition. Apple really need to up their game.

Apple has made the decision not to support VP9 in favor of forcing the transition to AV1 (similar to how they didn't support flash to force html5). So whether the hardware can but isn't accessible (like their intel desktops) or cannot (the A series) is irrelevant.

And apparently that VP9 performance isn't helping it other areas where in the 'real world' the A12 clobbers it in the 4k Adobe processing test here https://www.tomsguide.com/us/snapdragon-855-benchmarks,news-29129.html

They are both good chips with performance that would be acceptable for desktops from just a few years ago. Each one has areas where it is better than the other. In many cases it is going to be how well the OS integrates with it. In the end, it doesn't matter. Are the masses really going to switch from iOS to Android (or vice versa) over a few benchmarks or specific use cases?

Personally I like the new S10 series because it will force Apple to make a better product.

Oh no, a cable! How terribly inconvenient!

As opposed to garbage sounding wireless headphones that require them being charged that don't last long, cost a fortune and will inevitably be useless once the battery doesn't hold a charge.

Derp.
I’m sorry $159 is a fortune for you.

Wireless headphones still have their advantages and people don’t need studio quality sound most of the time.

Since when was $749 considered a reasonable price for a phone? What happened to $10 flip phones. The simpler times. This is analogous to raising the price of gas to five dollars, then lowering it to four and trying to convince us that we should be happy for "cheap gas"

I will gladly put up with all those "drawbacks" you mentioned just so I don't have to contend with cables again with regards to my headphones.

Apple. Please make a smaller phone. I also love the hole punch camera. Much nicer.
apple only brought back the SE for a limited time
after the horrible sales on china
so they figured how to make some extra cash
trying to recover from the bad sales
I personally like smaller phones but it seems that apple want the iPhones to look as big as iPads
maybe that is the excuse to charge more
it is bigger, it requires bigger parts so it cost more
:D

Does anyone else find it strange that they are *exactly* the same price tags?

Samsung doesn't wanna reduce it further, so they instead compete on features.

There have never been $10 flip phones - the price was just subsidized.
My Nokia 6110 in 1998 was $900 - $200 up front with ridiculously expensive 2 year contract.
In 2004 my Sony T610 was $400, $199 up front and the rest in the monthly bill. The other popular choice that year was the original RAZR at $600 (sometimes with a $100 carrier rebate).
The original iPhone was $499/599.

A modern $750 is phone is a bargain considering how much more capable they are.

The S10E has OLED. The iPhone XR has LCD. Samsung just wiped the floor with Apple on the budget variant.

- 128GB base storage vs 64GB
you can get the higher storage ones for more money

- better future proofing with 6GB vs 3GB DRAM
More RAM means diddly squat if your OS is memory-hungry and eats tons of extra RAM.

- more versatile OS with much fewer restrictions
You're forgetting - Android is an OS that always needs tweaking and always looked like it was made by freshmen graphics design students at a very average community college. I'm not saying Apple's OS is the most beautiful thing ever but when it comes to design it has always been leaps and bounds above that ugly trash called Android OS.

- nicer design and build quality that doesn't look Fisher Price
Funny you say that. Every Samsung phone I held in my hands so far felt like absolutely cheap piece of total trash. It is the very same feeling I get from getting into a Hyundai. Sort of like "these damn Koreans have absolutely no clue what good design looks and feels like". And much like Hyundais - Samsungs are just cheaply made junk. Maybe I'm just in sync with the whole Korean design thing but I dare not touch either one of those products without throwing to my mouth a little very time.

more convenient fingerprint biometric that doesn't require taking eyes off the road while driving
Over here you get a $300+ ticket for having a phone in your hand while driving. So consider it a safety feature.

I've owned exactly one Android in my life - my very first smartphone. I'd rather have a StarTAC than Android phone from then on.

It’s also OS vs OS and ecosystem vs ecosystem. And iOS is way ahead when it comes to Apps that can utilize a modern SoC.

Photoshop will absolutely come to iPhone. Not because people would actually want to do their primary work on an iPhone (you wouldn’t), but because you could make those last minute changes clients are always requesting without having to be at a computer.

But this is about more than Photoshop. It’s about the fact Android tablets are both garbage AND dead. Google has all but abandoned them, there’s no more “tablet optimized” section in the Play Store (which was empty when it did exist), none of the OEMs bother making high-end tablets and developers aren’t bringing any useful Apps to them.

Meanwhile on the iOS side Apple makes actual performance oriented iPads along with specialized X versions of their processors with substantially more power than the iPhone versions. They’ve also made significant upgrades to iOS for the iPad. This, in turn, has driven development of even better Apps.

And this is how the computer industry has always worked. Developers always push the envelope with features that stress CPUs and GPUs while manufacturers of those keep coming out with faster and faster versions. And the cycle continues.

At least on iOS it does. The iPad is like a bridge. An App (or feature) that was once on a Mac comes to the iPad and then to the iPhone. Everything trickles down. Just like features such as video editing required $100K workstations, then came to your home PC and can now be done on your phone.

There’s no equivalent “bridge” on the Android side. If their tablet market wasn’t so pitiful you’d likely see the same development pattern happen there as well.
Again it's phone vs phone, and the fact is s10e is a way better phone than xr, everybody knows Android tablets are as good as dead, Apple made sure of that when they introduced 329 iPad, however they do need to watch out for windows and tablets running it as well as 2 in 1s. Google is not done as well, they have something big planned with this new OS they're working on and I wouldn't write them off just yet.

Just imagine an iPhone 4 form, slightly thinner, edge-to-edge screen, and hole punch camera.

iPhone XR, $749 with at least 5 years of support, 41 cents a day.
Galaxy S10e, $749 with, at best, maybe 3 years of support, 68 cents a day.

The iPhone XR is the better value for the money.

This is the size XR was supposed to be. Or even smaller

And if that punch hole was in the middle and little bit higher, to blend more into that bezel, it would be almost perfect

For tablets, the iPad won. It’s a done deaL. Windows is competing in the laptop market, not tablet. Chromebooks is a (huge) threat to Windows, but the iPad has already been the last one standing when we talk about tablets.

I really like the S10e, even considered buying myself to give Android a try, but I found the switch would just be way too much work and I would lose more than I would gain. Great phone though and probably the one I would choose if I wanted a Samsung/Android. I am looking forward to going back from the 6.5 iPhone to the 5.8. I think it's the perfect size.

The switch is easy and necessary housekeeping, not doing it makes You losing your freedom! Simple as that

No one has really started with tablets — foldable phones will start the tablet market.
M% is great in tablets nowadays, but market has not recognized, still

The s10 also forces Samsung competition to make a better product, eating into Samsung’s sales more than apple’s, is my guess
Samsung actually never had much competition for the S series. Samsung Galaxy S users are annual upgraders, and they will continue upgrading their S phones every year.
What Samsung is losing is mid to low end, where Samsung is decimated by the Chinese. The mid to low end is the larger part of Samsung market share, and Samsung saw a huge drop. That’s why we are seeing the new M series and a rebooted A series.

Samsung is a copycat, everyone knows that. Whatever Apple did, Samsung will copy, including pricing. It makes sense as Samsung wants consumers to look at their brand at the same level as Apple, thus the pricing has to match each other.

Is it just me or these new "cheaper versions" actually look more crisp than their more expensive versions.

But it doesn’t. The screen is it and only in contrast and sharpness. I could care less about the SD cars, could care less about a 3.5 mm jack, could care less about 6 GB of RAM (Android has always had a lot more RAM). Speed? A wash. Camera performance? A wash. Battery life? Basically a wash. Software? iPhone by a mile. Support? iPhone by a mile.

Seems You ran out of money having to,buy the low cost low quality apple phone when there is a better XS. Think about that apple fan!

Responses in parenthesis:

- Qualcomm vs Intel baseband radio (on paper - unless one has proof)
- 1080p vs near 720p (true)
- OLED vs LCD (true, but from MR responses, some prefer LCD)
- virtually same display area while being physically smaller (okay, virtually)
- better battery life without near 720p compromise (again, subjective preference)
- 128GB base storage vs 64GB (true for base storage)
- micro SD storage expansion vs none (true)
- better future proofing with 6GB vs 3GB DRAM (false, this phone will easily last longer due to updates)
- 3.5mm audio jack vs none (the fact is true, the preference is subjective)
- additional wide angle camera vs none (true)
- reverse wireless charging for earbuds/watch vs none (true)
- included fast charger vs slow charger (true, not really fast vs slow, fast vs faster, depending on use case)
- included accessories vs none (subjective)
- IP68 vs IP67 (on paper better)
- more versatile OS with much fewer restrictions (false)
- nicer design and build quality that doesn't look Fisher Price (subjective)
- more convenient fingerprint biometric that doesn't require taking eyes off the road while driving (false, you still have to know where the fingerprint sensor is.

So out of the 17 points:

- 6 true
- 11 subjective

The one with the most weight is ios vs android and android to me loses. That is my objective list and subjective opinion.

Android is way superior, but You can cripple it down to work like iOS , so where’s your point?
The hw is far superior as You agreed!

Here comes the lies already. The Snapdragon 855 has been decimating the A12 Bionic in every speed test other than 1 or 2 that were probably manipulated for Apple to win. Come on Mac Rumers. Keep the honesty please.
What are you smoking?
[doublepost=1552722773][/doublepost]
Still waiting on the guy with the robots, but I've watched 7 different speed test and 5 out of 2 were Samsungs dominating. PUBG is faster on iPhone and Adobe Express, to make you feel better.
Its not a speed test, genius, iOS has by design long animations. You are not testing what you think you are testing.

I could tell what I do care about, but I could care less to say. :D
I believe the point is the saying is “could not care less”. Saying could care less implies that it has some weight with you and thus the capacity for you to be able to care less. Could not care less means that it is of no consequence to you

That is why I use iPhone XR now as it doesn’t burn my eyes at night.

A Dark mode and Night light (no blue) on your phone makes OLED way superior to LCD at night. I use my phone for reading a lot, and the shift from LCD to OLED makes reading on the phone at Night-time a pure pleasure. On a LCD the whole screen lights up even if most of it is a Black area. IMO OLED is superior to LCD in every way - even apple agree with this as they have put OLED in their premium products. This makes the XR a vastly inferior product as even low midrange phones today comes with a better screen.
