Haha for once, yes. Agree though, can’t wait to go back to the 5.8 size. Yea the quality of apps is something that would likely become an issue for me if I was ever to switch. I like new tech so I am interested when new stuff comes out, but that fades the more I think about it and I’m reminded why I stick with iOS.

Try rooting your phone and installing something like MIUI, I personally like the way it's set up just about as much as I do iOS. Of course jailbreaking iOS and then putting a new theme on it is also nice, but tweaks are less stable than a full OS like is the case for MIUI.

I am a medical student so thought the extra $350 for the XS was not wise to spend at that time. However, nice try at an insult Android fan!

Basically everyone who says the XR is vastly inferior is an Android user or has never used the phone.

Actually, if you read my post/reply you would know exactly why I said the Xr was inferior. I has nothing to do with Android/ios - it is based on the technology used, and the fact that apple delibrately crippled its screen technology to differentiate it from the premium series. The funny part is the in the TV-world it is Samsung that is trying to convince its users that LCD is just as good as OLED, but only the hardcore “blind” users buy it.

There is probably some truth in this. I use my Apple hardware to run a small business. The combination of phone, watch and tablet is important to me. Does anyone apart from kids use their smartphone in isolation anymore? Things like continuity and handoff are important to me and help my business run smoothly and make me a living. I’ve used android in the past and would happily switch if they had a watch, phone & tablet combo that work equally as well.

If you are a kid that wants to play games and fool around on social media then yes, I can see that this phone might be a better option for you.
Suggest people learn to read and understand what a car mount is. Fanboys just trying to distract from the subject of Face ID is more dangerous since it requires taking eyes of the road to unlock vs fingerprint/Touch ID that doesn't. Anyone who claims they haven't used in-car navigation is lying. Mounted voice activated GPS is legal except Face ID should be banned.

Of course! I’d also suggest that looking at the cars instrument panel (like that handy speedometer) should also be banned as one has to take ones eyes off the road in order to read it. TouchID also requires that your hand is taken off the steering wheel which in certain circumstances can be an issue. Ban it!

I use iOS so my only option would be jailbreaking. I used to back in the day, but I lost interest and didn’t find it was worth it in the end. I prefer the consistent updates that Apple brings.

Long story short: Samsung is limited to competing with the screen tech and the camera tech. That's all they've got to work with. No chance on competing with their own OS. No chance on competing with the SoC. And even the facial recognition tech is beyond their capability.

I'll also point out that this is yet another "benchmarks don't really matter" article for phones from a site that constantly compares benchmarks for laptops/desktops when complaining about Apple not doing spec bump updates every year in that hardware category. Certainly the comment about "the Snapdragon 855 does not perform as well as the A12 on benchmarks, but these are modern smartphones that excel at everyday tasks" would equally apply to desktop/laptops as well? Why does that attitude disappear when talking about Intel chip sets?

Of course, an Android phone can be unlocked in the presence of the car's Bluetooth signal. No need for driver to do anything. As you point out, mounted voice activated control of a mobile phone is legal, certainly in UK. Volvo recommend the use of voice commands when using their navigation system when the car is in motion.
Presumably the phone is unlocked prior to putting the car in drive, not while traveling down the freeway at 80. Bluetooth signals do not just start up randomly, so what’s the point?

The iPhone 4 was a far better design (for it's time) than the 5, it still looks premium today where the 5 looks "ok". I currently use an SE and still have those phones so I can see them next to each other.

I'll likely be buying a Galaxy S10e today though, Apple have given up on small phones so we're getting nothing smaller than the X going forwards, the S10e is only marginally smaller but doesn't skimp on things like headphone jack, still has a touch sensor which I prefer to face ID and because I don't particularly want a large phone but want something more modern than my 3 year old SE it doesn't irk as much spending £670 on it rather than £1000 for the XS.

4 was UGLY. Just look up the MacRumors’ thread when the protoype was leaked, our collective reaction was it was really ugly.

And Apple giving up on small phones is a shame. I blame society and young people and its YouTube/video game addiction, so Apple is forced to cater to these sad people. I however am an e-sports athlete, so that’s different.

Here comes the lies already. The Snapdragon 855 has been decimating the A12 Bionic in every speed test other than 1 or 2 that were probably manipulated for Apple to win. Come on Mac Rumers. Keep the honesty please.
LMAO. ok.

The 855 “decimates” the A12. You could make yourself a little less obvious by trying to use better words. The 855 can’t even beat my 7 Plus score single core score on geekbench. Sure it opens apps faster because of the animations are different. But that’s about it.

I don't think you can blame young people and their YouTube/video game addictions for the larger screen phones. As phones became more capable through hardware and software, and solid apps that have been developed that continually add function to the phone, smartphones for many people have become their de facto computer, answering emails, text, surfing the web, online shopping, etc. It was only logical that phone screens became bigger to view all of that content. I think the XR is a perfect sized phone for me. It's big screen in a smaller form than the 7 Plus I had, but for some people it's too large. I prefer larger screen phones but I can also appreciate the people who do not use their phone for much more than the occasional email and mostly for phone and text who want a small screen phone.

Yeah my wife has a 7 Plus still and that thing is still just about as fast as the 2018 iPhones. It's incredible really. I think the gesture based navigation speeds up the UI, but otherwise, if the 7 Plus used the gestures, it would feel the same.

Was not an insult against You, more against apples ridiculous prices. That’s what I meant to think about

Since when was $749 considered a reasonable price for a phone? What happened to $10 flip phones. The simpler times. This is analogous to raising the price of gas to five dollars, then lowering it to four and trying to convince us that we should be happy for "cheap gas"
Those phones practically did nothing in comparison.

Terrible analogy. Gas is just gas and the current smartphone is nothing like the previous cell phone.

It doesn’t necessarily mean the chip is faster, but ”real world” useage is faster no matter if it’s due to software “limitations” or not. No?

Really interesring that the XR fell behind the XS Max in this case. The XR test on Anandtech shows the battery life of the XR is suppused to be better, even Apple claims this. At least it seems that Samsung with the high capacity batteries in the Galaxy 10 series seem to have the upper hand currently in real world “mixed” usage – despite the A12 being so much more power efficient.
IMO, i would not call that winning, but to each their own.

Turn on engine, Bluetooth is enabled, phone connects with car Bluetooth. Automatically.

Again it's phone vs phone, and the fact is s10e is a way better phone than xr, everybody knows Android tablets are as good as dead, Apple made sure of that when they introduced 329 iPad, however they do need to watch out for windows and tablets running it as well as 2 in 1s. Google is not done as well, they have something big planned with this new OS they're working on and I wouldn't write them off just yet.

A piece of hardware sans software is useless. You can’t separate the physical device from the OS/ecosystem as it’s ability to be useful is directly tied to that OS/ecosystem.

Google has something planned with their new OS? Which one is that? Google can’t make up their mind.

Chrome OS isn’t going anywhere. It’s a wannabee desktop OS with too many limitations and a severe lack of professional high-end software. So what does Google do to stimulate Chrome OS? Why they add the ability to run Android Apps. So now you’ve got the wannabee desktop OS running mobile Apps from developers who can’t even be bothered to optimize their Apps for tablets. And now they’re expected to suddenly change their ways and optimize to run on a Chromebook? We know how that will turn out as anyone who’s ran Android Apps on Chrome will tell you - it’s the same situation as on tablets.

Or maybe you mean that other Google OS, Fuchsia. We already have Windows/macOS established on the desktop and iOS/Android on mobile. There’s no room for a third desktop OS so all Fuchsia has left is mobile and embedded. On mobile all Google could possibly do is replace Android with Fuchsia and allow current Apps to run so people aren’t stuck with new devices and no software. But this doesn’t really help Google as they’re replacing one mobile OS with another. They’re still stuck with all those developers who simply “can’t be bothered”.

Oh, and Google just removed (transferred) a bunch of people in their hardware division responsible for tablets/laptops and apparently cancelled future products. Yet another nail in the coffin.

Opening Apps and closing them before actually using them is “real world” use?

Why are all the Android users afraid of opening Apps and then spending time in those Apps doing something to show how people actually use their devices? You know, testing the speed while actually performing work, not launching endless Apps in a loop.

Yes, that happens with every phone, even an iphone.

The XR represents Apple's greed in the extreme. They made it purposefully thick with big bezels just to differentiate it from the XS. And yes, an LCD phone for that price in 2019 is a joke. All they're doing is taking advantage of the fact that 90% of people don't know any better.
90% of the people elected to buy and Xr over the competition is more the way it is.
You do understand Samsung makes the display and the phone right? There is no markup selling to themselves like to Apple.

From what I could find the display is about $80 for OLED Apple pays. If it costs Samsung $40-50 in material/labor without markup, then they have a HUGE HUGE advantage there to put out the same $750 device with OLED.

BIG distinction there.
Large companies will charge back their various divisions for services rendered. I would be surprised if Samsung Display division, didn't charge Samsung Mobile for the displays. Given Samsung mobile reports revenue, it makes sense they do, else the revenue per phone is inflated, while the revenue per display is underreported for Samsung displays.

You said Bluetooth signals do not start randomly. I am aware of this.
Yes, I knew you were.

Samsung wins.

The XR is only ahead in a few categories, such as Instagram having the camera already open. Interestingly if that was the other way round Apple fans would be claiming it's evidence of a lack of privacy.
That what this is about. Varied opinions on the two phones, philosophies of the different manufacturers. If those were my only two choices I would pick the XR. Based on your priorities you will have a different take on what makes a better phone than someone else.

Responses in parenthesis:

- Qualcomm vs Intel baseband radio (on paper - unless one has proof)
- 1080p vs near 720p (true)
- OLED vs LCD (true, but from MR responses, some prefer LCD)
- virtually same display area while being physically smaller (okay, virtually)
- better battery life without near 720p compromise (again, subjective preference)
- 128GB base storage vs 64GB (true for base storage)
- micro SD storage expansion vs none (true)
- better future proofing with 6GB vs 3GB DRAM (false, this phone will easily last longer due to updates)
- 3.5mm audio jack vs none (the fact is true, the preference is subjective)
- additional wide angle camera vs none (true)
- reverse wireless charging for earbuds/watch vs none (true)
- included fast charger vs slow charger (true, not really fast vs slow, fast vs faster, depending on use case)
- included accessories vs none (subjective)
- IP68 vs IP67 (on paper better)
- more versatile OS with much fewer restrictions (false)
- nicer design and build quality that doesn't look Fisher Price (subjective)
- more convenient fingerprint biometric that doesn't require taking eyes off the road while driving (false, you still have to know where the fingerprint sensor is.

So out of the 17 points:

- 6 true
- 11 subjective

The one with the most weight is ios vs android and android to me loses. That is my objective list and subjective opinion.

Stating “more versatile OS with fewer restrictions” false is your attempt to being “objective?”

iOS is known as a “Walled Garden.” There are so much more restrictions on iOS, it’s not even funny.

Android has a better file system, better multitasking, more customization, the ability to sideload apps, more accessible developer settings, and doesn’t force you to use Apple’s proprietary products and services to get a lot of functions you can do without Apple tax or restrictions.

Yeah it’s pretty cool that Apple sped up older devices. My 7 Plus went to mom in replace of her SE. But using it feels just as fast as my Max.
