I think 5k is overkill at 27". I use a 4k 32" OLED and it's already sharp; I think I'd barely notice the step to 5k at this size. I'd want 5k for anything bigger, but not something smaller.

I use 32” 4k and while it’s usable I wouldn’t say it’s super sharp. I just deal with it. I think stepping up to 32” 5k would be great and if such consumer priced product existed I would certainly buy it.

If Samsung wants to play in Apples space they need to pay more attention to detail such as:

--> Less plastics and more quality materials used throughout.
--> a less wobbly monitor.
--> provide much better quality speakers that are at least getting close to the ASD.
--> colour match all the accessories why do you have a white remote with a silver monitor?
--> colour match the cabling.

Look Samsung are not scoring all own goals they're getting plenty right like:

--> the 4k detachable webcam. Tick
--> the rotate and height adjustable stand right out of the box. Tick
--> 5k retina quality display. Tick
--> colour calibration features. Tick
--> A matte finished coating. Tick
I don't know that I like a detachable webcam. I think actually I prefer it not to be detachable and that it simply be integrated so there's no external cable hanging around loose.

I do like that their webcam is such high quality, but all that said and done, it also makes me wonder whether such a high resolution cam is necessary for a webcam. I think not. Unless you're going to use that webcam for say recording YouTube videos and some such, 4k seems unnecessary. Maybe one thinks of making good recordings for formal presentations. I still am not so sure that a 4k camera is necessary as it would make the presentation recording way too big and unnecessarily high resolution. So maybe after some thinking about it, I don't care too much for a 4k webcam.

I had a 4K 27inch and thought it was quite a waste to have that many pixels in only a 27inch space so i got a 32inch instead. Is there really merit in doing 5K 27inch?

Yes 5k @ 27 inch is one of the screen size/resolutions macOS is best targeted. 4k at the same screen size looks terrible in comparison. There are very few 5k monitors because this is mainly a macOS scaling issue.

Finally!

I am still on the LG 5K Ultrafine. I like this monitor but... but biggest gripe—and it goes for the Studio Display as well—is the lack of inputs. (I actually just built a gaming PC with Thunderbolt 4 to deal with this, lol.)

I'd at least consider this as my next monitor. The Studio Display seems rather... troubled with a bunch of weird issues. However, having been using 5K since 2017... there is no going back, period.

Depends on the kind of work you do and how sharp your eyes are. I use a 5k 27" and 4k 27" side-by-side, and can definitely see and appreciate the added sharpness of the 5k.

Yeah im just coding. Pointless for me. Although QHD and 4K makes a lot of difference in the 32" i'm using

must be one of those things where I can't tell the diff. But good to know the 5K 27inch actually makes sense

If I were a coder, I'd most definitely want high ppi, at least if I were sitting at about 20-24" away from the monitor. Small text is a lot easier to read once the ppi gets to 160+. 32" 4K is only 138 ppi.

I'm not a coder, but I do work in text all day long.

OTOH, for casual photo editing, the pixel density made no real difference to me. More important was the colour balance, etc.

I'll have to keep an eye out for a high pixel density 32 inch and see for myself what the hype is about. I'd think ppi would be important for photos but yeah i guess you're right about color being more important

There isn't? The video I saw showed a dangling black cable behind the monitor. Was that cable not the webcam cable?

Update: I re-watched the video and do see there's no external cable for the webcam. The cable I saw looks to be either the power cable to the monitor and/or the video cable.

Viewing the video more closely using a desktop monitor as opposed to my iPhone, this monitor looks even more cheap looking, especially with that plastic-y webcam "insert". Ugh. For US$1300, I do expect a much more premium feel to the product. To me, the outside look and feel of the monitor looks more in line with monitors in the US$600 or $700 range.

Another thought - It really shows what a fantastic value the base 27" 5K iMac was (when it started at $1799 and was often discounted for less). Again was really hoping the S9 would come in at $999 and then discounted for less...
Seriously. It was almost like you were buying a very nice Apple display and getting a built-in computer thrown in for like $300. What's unfortunate, though, is that once the computer dies or gets old and slow, you are SOL on reusing the display.

US$930 street at launch in Korea. I wonder what pricing will be in a few months in other countries.

Can’t compare. Your monitor isn’t 5k. It’s probably a1080 or 1440 gaming display with nonexistent color accuracy, right? Us designers and retouchers don’t need more than 60hz jacking up the price; we need accurate color, wide gamut, 5K, and a solid build.

Currently nothing can come close to Apple’s offerings. I bought an LG 34WK95U and it’s a plastic piece of wobbly garbage with a just-ok display. My 2015 5K iMac that I sold so I could get a 14” M1 MacBook Pro destroys it but I bought the LG instead of the Studio to save $300 after some reviewers said the Studio was overpriced. Probably the most expensive mistake I ever made. The Studio is an excellent display with god tier speakers as a bonus.

in 2023, you or I shouldn’t have to have either / or…

human beings are looking at screens more than ever before in the history of humankind and Flicker/ Refresh rate should not be locked away in a top-tier offering that jack’s up the price notably…

higher refresh rates, all things being equal are better for the eye, then lower refresh rates…

yes, it’s a 1080p Fry’s purchase monitor 🥸

offtopic: More cars should come standard with mudflaps, it saves other drivers windshields from debris. They too, shouldn’t jack up the price of a car imo. 😎

Well Apple left the market wide open to under cut the Apple Studio Display and still make a nice profit. With all the great Apple desktops available, this is sorely needed and hopefully the casual market will realize that this option exists.

I never bought an iMac after 2011. I was tempted by the 5k displays but they we’re all chained to computers that were severely underpowered and/or overpriced, and couldn't be upgraded
