If next Tuesday, I hope then aren't just going to be MB style speed bumps. No new GPU, no Santa Rosa, no LED bl 2k screen (17in MBP)...it's possible.

That won't happen. There's nothing to bump it too. 2.33GHz is the fastest processor on the Napa platform.

It'll probably be more like $600 more, not $1000 for us. And *hopefully* it'll have a Geforce 8600GT, 2.2GHz/800MHz Core 2 (on the low end model), and of course a larger screen. If it's got that and you want the screen real estate and/or the massively better GPU, it'll be worth it.

If we're really, really lucky they'll even drop the MBP price a bit, though I'm not holding my breath for that one.

don't hold too long

On another look, you seem to be right. I don't know where I (thought that I) read about that faster chip...

Dell/Alienware sell a 2.33GHz one that's unlocked and can be overclocked in the BIOS. I'm guessing you're thinking of that. Dell's configuration page calls it a "2.66GHz overclocked..." version of that same 2.33GHz chip. But 2.33GHz is the fastest officially.

So yeah, only way to get a faster chip is to upgrade to the new platform.

The new ATI 2000 series mobile GPUs are scheduled to start shipping in laptops "available beginning in May". Apple would be conspicuously left behind if it didn't upgrade the MBPs.

I'd rather have the nvidia 8600. The benchmarks say it's better and I like nvidia better than ati.

 .. went to apple store yesterday.. a sales told me that next MBP update is coming this october..

Source? I've seen lots of articles that say the opposite.

Make sure you're not comparing the 2900 with the 8800. Completely different story.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
The MBP was last updated October last year. People at Apple stores know NOTHING. The longest time on record between Powerbook refreshes was 9 months. Today's MBP is already up to 7. Another 5 months is completely out of the question. Apple's sales would plummet over the next 5 months. The MBP is due for an update NOW. The chance that the MBP will not be updated before the end of WWDC is vanishingly small.

Sales people don't know. If they told the sales people then we wouldn't need this forum because the release dates would be leaked so much we would always know when updates are coming.

They are as clueless as us. And apparently the one you asked doesn't even pay attention to apple trends.

Hi I don't know if this helps, but I have been waiting to buy a new MBP 15.4" too. I work at Best Buy so naturally I'm going to order it directly through Best Buy. I have been watching the online site, and Best Buy has taken down there 15.4" models, and not the 17".

Anyways, just thought I would bring that to everyones attention.

Thanks for the heads up! It is interesting. I'd want the 17" model updated at the same time too, but actually, if it is a complete redesign, the 15" model might go first, as it has in the past :D

I probably have my hopes way too high on this. Especially after the Macbook...

Well I think we can all agree that whenever this update comes, they'd have better fixed the heat issues that plague the current gen MBP's. For me it's one of those things that would make the MBP MUCH more appealing. BTW- anybody know any specific reason why the MBP's heat up so much and the MB's don't? is it just because of the graphics card and/or the metal enclosure?

I haven't followed this closely, but are you sure it's a heat issue, and not just that metal transmits heat better, so it feels hotter? The only extra thing in there is the GPU, and it's not exactly high end.

If the Macbook Pro feels hot, that means the heat is coming out, as opposed to staying inside.
That's probably how Apple manages to keep their laptops so thin. If you take a look at other laptops that are more chunky, put them under stress, and then hold your hand in front of the exhaust vents, the air coming out of them is very, very hot. The case stays reasonably cool, because plastic is a crappy conductor of heat. This means the computer companies have to install large, noisy fans. Instead of taking this approach, Apple makes the whole computer the heat sink, meaning less of the heat is transferred out by fans, and more is conducted through the case. This would lead to thin notebooks (not laptops, for obvious reasons) that got hot, but stayed quiet.

There was a rumour here a few weeks ago about Apple getting 100,000 15.4" LED/LCD screens. Apple said they would transition to LED/LCD when they could, and if it is viable for them to change the 15.4" MBP, it may still not be viable for them to change the 17". I would say 15"ers soon, 17"ers later.

I would say LED screens are a near certainty. The question is what else gets updated. A move to Santa Rosa will mean the top MBP CPU speed is still only 2.4Ghz.

I would have thought implementation of Robson was unlikely, but some minor updates to the enclosure (magnetic latches) could certainly happen.

This begs the question about the GPU - have the MacBooks been kept behind to ensure there is no competition with the x1600, or will a new MBP GPU be used to differentiate the MB and MBP more, because their CPU speeds will stay so similar?

There's just no way they can use that same pathetic GPU again. If the update is coming shortly, to me it seems like it has to be a Geforce 8600GT. Switching to a 7600GT (what it should have had to begin with) is a year too late now. And a 7900GS, 7950GTX, x1800, x1900 probably all draw too much power for a 15" laptop (and in some ways aren't as good as an 8600GT). The 17" Macbook Pro at least should have always had a higher end GPU though. Especially for the price-for that much, Windows laptops would give you a high end 7950GTX...and Apple's going with a low end part :(

Don't know how much relevance there is in this, but one of my local shops that sell :apple: 's was showing the 15.4" MBP as a clearance item:eek:

Although their website does not state this, it is currently out of stock on the 17" version. No comments were passed on by the sales staff when I asked about this:rolleyes:

They also seem to be showing the old spec MB on the website with some out of stock.

See Link!

Don't know if anyone else in the UK can confirm this in their Local John Lewis.

Cheers,

S

Well now theres nothing at all there...I mean nothing!!
JL dropping Macs? Server update or do they know something we don't? Heres wishing.

MBP'll probably get the x1700 which is a successor to x1600. While it might not be *best* out there, it's still great.

No, it's not. It's the same thing as the x1600, slightly speed bumped, and was also low end last year when the MPB launched.

Doing that would be another Macbook style slap in the face. They could have been using a decent mid-range GPU for the last year...and they need to move to a mid range GPU now, not fall even further behind.
