I hear you . . . maybe even less. Full upgrade for folks on 10.4, since they'd be getting 10.5 anyway. But based on reports thus far, I'd sit out Snow Leopard at $129 (or even with modest discount).

I might be looking at a price of $49 or so before jumping, absent some compelling additions.

then again has apple ever had an "upgrade price" on anything?

I doubt that. It will be $129 for everyone same as usual.

I sure hope you're wrong.

Charging full price for optimizations, particularly some that were promised in 10.5, would not be well received at all. It would be a PR nightmare and I doubt they'd sell many.

NO WAY

People will buy it. Pirates (borrow from a friend) will always be there, but apple fans are too damn loyal

You really think a release with minimal if any new features would sell as many copies as other releases at the same price? For people who aren't power users (particularly not in need of extra speed, like those mostly surfing the web and doing word processing) but bought previous releases, what is the selling point? I don't see it.

then again has apple ever had an "upgrade price" on anything?

Then again has apple ever released a paid OS update that was all optimizations and bugfixes with minimal new features?

While it could be $129, is there any evidence to support that idea, or is it just a wild guess at this point?

I'm hoping for the unibody 17" MBP. They've had time to set up factories to produce them, right?

Uh, they don't have to "set up factories to produce them." They place an order with a laptop manufaturer and write them a check. Just like all the PC companies do. They don't even have to hire any elves to put them together. :D

Getting more stable?

Anyone notice how we're only up to 10.5.6 this time? Previously by the time a new version was ready to be released we'd be up to .10 or .11.

I wonder if there have been less updates because they weren't needed (less things to fix) or if Apple is being more cautious.

Some sort of "half price" number would seem to make the most sense. If the price is too high many people will feel that it's a ripoff and I'd bet it would end up pirated more than other versions.

Why Apple should charge some "half price"? 10.5 brought us some end user features they can see, 10.6 is bringing some core features that you can't see, but those features will speed up almost every task you can think of. And there are no evidence that these featutes that we know of are the only ones, maybe some GUI features or something.

I doubt they'd sell many.
I would disagree with this. Many folks who are running Tiger are waiting for Snow Leopard to upgrade. So you have some pent up buying demand.

The past price for new versions of OS X has been around $129. It will probably be the same for Snow Leopard. Of course there will be educational discounts and other promotional savings. But full retail price will be around $129 like all of the others would be my guess.

Cougar or Lynx

So this means Cougar (OS X 10.7) should be ready just in time for the Windows 7 launch. Or maybe they will call it Lynx.

  1. iPhone sales numbers
  2. Snow Leopard demo
  3. Various speed/capacity bumps
  4. New MBP with glossy screens
  5. iLife '09
    "One more thing..."
  6. Additional glossy ADC
All presented to mostly silent audience who is assured of "a lot more great products in the pipeline."

No way... MWSF ought to have

1- Mac Pro update
2- iMac update
3- Mac mini update
4- Apple tv update
5- New display monitors
6- Blu-Ray inclusion / options
7- Snow Leopard preview and announcement of shipping date
8- ipod updates?

I wish we could get option of Matte finish screen for displays and MB / MBP, but apple is remarkably unfriendly these days to consumers. They adhere to a do it our way routine. they actually think they know what their consumers want. Many people want Matte finish screens and, they mythical midrange tower mac.

Apple does not compete like that, the will release on their own schedule. 10.6 will come in the first qtr, windows 7 in mid year. 10.7 I would guess late 09- mid 10

People aren't going to consider it worth full price because as you say, they can't see those features. Not to mention that it raises the question, why didn't apple just write their OS with good performance in the first place. Why wasn't 10.5 faster, and why have to pay for something that should have been there in the first place?

If people don't see a reason to buy, they don't buy. Period. And apple has already said that 10.6 would have no major new features, so that's not just speculation.

Wishful thinking... ( I would love to see a new Mac Mini)
plus Blu-ray is still a Bag of hurt...

Most of those look like speed/capacity bumps. With the one exception of the mini, I don't think anyone is expecting any new models or designs (and I think the mini may just be a speed bump as well).

But instead it /will/ have:
Clock speed increased by a couple hundred Mhz for the iMacs
Snow Leopard presentation
iLife 09, now with iMovie being even less useful
mini dropped, replaced by a stripped iMac for $899
iPod nano in dalmatian and purple

Because you can't just go and do it, it's called research and development. You can't use all resources just for one goal. Knowing that Apple runs quite few "just in case" projects and what i've seen from latest dev builds OS they are giving us is very impresive.

1. No. No chips.
2. Probably.
3. Probably.
4. Probably.
5. 20" discontinued, 30" updated.
6. Heck no.
7. Yep.
8. Once a year, every year, September. Guess what month it is.

You miss my point. I agree that it takes apple time and costs them money. I'm just saying that people generally aren't excited about spending money by "you won't see anything new, just trust us that we worked really hard and there are lots of things that are better that you can't see".

I don't doubt that it will be better, nor am I saying it's not a good thing that apple is doing this. I just ask what will motivate the average Joe Websurfer to spend $129 on it?

My predictions for MacWorld...

1. iPhone 3G sales numbers
2. iTunes sales numbers
3. More DRM-free songs (but not all DRM-free)
4. Snow Leopard demo
5. Dumbfounded and disappointed audience
6. 28 page MacRumors thread about nothing :)

I was being facetious. But seriously, Snow Leopard will significantly raise the bar and almost certainly force Microsoft to push back it's release date to add equivalent functionality. Thus, my joke may turn out to be prescient.

To me your prediction seems more plausible. With Steve giving up the Expo don't expect any earth shattering announcements.

Microsoft doesn't add functionality. They announce all the functionality up front, and then take it back out until the product they finally release is the previous version of Windows with a tweaked interface.
