exactly... I have an early '08 MBP as well, won't snow leopard destroy my geforce 8600M GT even faster?

It surely must. I suppose for non-gamers who haven't got AppleCare it could be a blessing in disguise as it might hasten the death before the two-year extended warranty is up.

  1. iPhone sales numbers
  2. Snow Leopard demo
  3. Various speed/capacity bumps
  4. New MBP with glossy screens
  5. iLife '09
    "One more thing..."
  6. Additional glossy ADC
All presented to mostly silent audience who is assured of "a lot more great products in the pipeline."

I don't think it will be iLife '09. My guess is that they may announce iLife '10 which will be due out later this year. I'd also add a 32 gb iPhone to the list too.

Oh, and maybe an $300 8" netbook, with 4 gb ram and 500 gb hard drive

Apple doesn't announce things while the previous model is still shipping. Either what they announce is available immediately/shipping in a few weeks and the previous is taken off the site or they don't announce it.

My prediction is that Phil Schiller will be making several BIG announcements. I'm giving you all the specificity of a typical TV psychic. There will be "several" and they will be "big."

The last time I saw Jobs speak, he acted more as a master of ceremonies (or emcee or MC, to you youngsters!) than as the one-man show he used to do. He trotted up many others to discuss different things.

Also, there have been many of these big speeches that have been duds, partly because nothing really exciting was revealed and partly because the rumor mill was exactly right and stole Jobs' thunder.

My psychic revelation is based on the idea that if Apple wants to pull off this changing of the guard (at least replacing Jobs as the public face of Apple), they have to give Schiller some killer material to ease the sting of not seeing our hero.
My prediction as well.

This would follow suit with how Apple handled the previous iLife release, i.e. releasing iLife 08 in August of 07. Apple has obviously been focusing on other products as of late, so if they do not have anything significant in the works for the iLife suite then they probably won't have anything of substance to release until later next year.

I'd also add a 32 gb iPhone to the list too.

Now that single 32GB chips are available this is now finally do-able.

Then don't buy it. Simple as that. You don't feel the upgrade is worth you money. Most of us, however, do. I'll gladly hand over the money for Snow Leopard. Development doesn't come free, and anyone who thinks Snow Leopard is just a "maintenance" upgrade is crazy.

Exactly, I won't purchase it if I don't feel it's worth upgrading for my needs. However your use of 'Most of us' is unfounded, and instead indicative of your opinion. I don't think it's unfair to say that a vast number of Macs in the world (many will be PPC ones) will not be able to fully harness the new features like OpenCL and, to a lesser extent, Grand Central.
Snow Leopard is by no means a maintenance upgrade but that doesn't make it one I can't afford to miss either.

With regard to stuff going on under the hood, I'm just not convinced right now because there are no numbers or a demo to show me what I'm missing if I don't get Snow Leopard. Hopefully Macworld should fix this.

Exactly - this is why I am loking forward to the keynote, even though there will not be any flashy new features demo'd - provide me with a better idea and understanding of what Snow Leopard truly has to offer and I will then decide whether it makes sense to purchase it or not.

Free upgrade for new 10.5 users?

Based on past experience with OS upgrades, if I buy a new MBPro after the first of the year (still running 10.5) would I likely get a free upgrade to 10.6 when it comes out.

I'd rather wait a wee bit longer if that saves me from having to pay a $99 (or whatever) upgrade fee in just a few months.

Thanks...

$129. Just clarifying.

We don't know when it comes out. If it comes out at MacWorld (it won't), your order should have a drop-in disk, and if not, you should be able to go to an Apple Store and get one.

If it comes out at WWDC or thereabouts, no dice.

A policy that was in place when said person bought their computer. The fix is to upgrade that iMac to Leopard or Snow Leopard. Pretty simple.

Frankly, I don't think Apple would sell very many computers if they had a sign at the checkout counter stating:

"THIS COMPUTER WILL BE SUBJECT TO INFECTION 17 MONTHS AFTER YOU BUY IT UNLESS YOU PAY US MORE MONEY."

Do what I plan on doing: If you can, wait until April. Apple will refresh the Macbook Pro with a better standard processor. Plus, if Snow Leopard is already out by then, which it could be, then you'll be getting Snow Leopard with it as well. Just a thought if you don't mind waiting.

We get it-you don't appreciate Apple's OS Lifecycle, but what can any of us do? I paid to upgrade my old MBP to Leopard while my new MBP came with leopard, and I'll probably wait in line for Snow Leopard unless I can snag a copy from work for "testing" reasons.

I believe that I can wait. Thanks.

But what happens in April? WWDC? Intel speed bumps?

Referring to this article. It's incredible that an app as simple iCal has a file size of 89 megabytes! My first harddisk (Amiga) had a total capacity of 20 mb. On it, I had an entire OS, DTP WYSIWYG software, WordProcessor, DeluxePaint, lotsa fonts, several utilities, pictures, music etc. etc. oh, and several megabytes of free space as well.
I know everything was way simpler and smaller back then, but, iCal 89 mb...

No wonder why modern computers, despite their "supercomputer-class"-processors, ultra-fast gigabytes of RAM and super-speedy harddrives have longer boot times than my 20 years old Amiga system had. Kinda sad, really.

I think Apples "clean-up/optimization"-Snow Leopard-mission is going to make a huge difference.
Never have I looked more forward to a new version of OS X than this time.

Update: I just realised that the current version of TextEdit would not have fit on my entire Amiga HD. TextEdit! 22 mb! Sad. Sloppy.

My predictions for MacWorld...

1. iPhone 3G sales numbers
2. iTunes sales numbers
3. More DRM-free songs (but not all DRM-free)
4. Snow Leopard demo
5. Dumbfounded and disappointed audience
6. 28 page MacRumors thread about nothing :)

Pretty close. Especially with the 28 page thread. I've said it before, but I'll say it again here.

Updates to:
Mac Mini
iMac
iPhone to 32gb -> Leads to discussion of iTunes
More DRM free songs
(30 minutes)

Snow Leopard Demo - Release date Feb/March
(20 minutes)

Steve Jobs comes out looking normal and says goodbye to MWSF. Highlight reel of MWSF high moments)
(10 minutes)

Mac Pro and ACDs (if ACDs are not updated at MWSF) will be updated at WWDC or a special event sometime between MWSF and WWDC.

It's amazing that they're able to cut the already smallish apps down to just 10% of their previous sizes but with the bigger apps they're only getting reduced to 30-50% of their previous sizes. Some of the apps, like Safari, don't seem to be getting much smaller at all.

Oh... here's my quick list of things I'm hoping for at MacWorld...

1.) Bigger iPod Touch/iPhone with more capacity.
2.) iPod Touch/iPhone software 3.0
3.) New MacMini
4.) Upgraded MacPro
5.) Snow Leopard
6.) iLife '09
7.) iWork '09

One Last Thing... (or will Schiller make his own catch phrase?)
MacNetBook

??? Like... IDK, maybe it'll be like... two iPod Touches joined by a hinge. SO it's still pocketsized... yet it's got twice as much screen space. It's like a tiny laptop. Lay it flat or prop it up... or maybe hold it like a book. Whatever the app calls for. Maybe flip the whole thing over? Or totally detach them?

Mmmm... sounds like a bunch of interesting if far fetched and unbased concepts.

@ flottenheimer

I'm will you all the way here!

a rough calculation says that you'll save 505 MB of disk space. Of course application start time will be much better!

Now, can we get Snow Leopard down below 700 MB? I doubt it, but I think it is worth a try albeit and expensive endeavor.

I think parsimonious code is stronger and more robust.

Uh, they don't have to "set up factories to produce them." They place an order with a laptop manufaturer and write them a check. Just like all the PC companies do. They don't even have to hire any elves to put them together. :D

who is this "manufaturer" you speak of?

A manufacturer needs the equipment to produce the unibodies. I don't think it's as simple as flipping a switch from 15" to 17". There would have to be adjustments made to throughout the process. I'm not sure how easy of a job that would be - even if they do hire elves.
